~Landon’s Perspective~
I sit at the table with Pax, William, Avery, Castor, Pollux, and Alex. We eat our food as the atmosphere bustles around us.
“So,” begins Pax. “You’re saying that you’re not only preparing for open war with the Emerald Skull Pirates, but you also know where Landon’s people are hiding as well?”
“Yup,” Avery responds. “That’s just about it. We’re just waiting for the rest of our crew to come back from carrying supplies to the refugees.”
“When should they be back?” I ask.
“Dunno. Could be a few days, maybe tomorrow. I don’t know. But it’s pretty late. Let’s get some rest and meet up tomorrow.”
“Tomorrow?” asks William. “We have to meet Theos tomorrow.”
“Well shit,” says Alex. I look at them. They insisted on being referred to as they/them. I don’t really care, although it feels weird referring to someone by pronouns usually used to describe multiple people. “That puts a wrench in our plans.”
“Well,” I begin. “We could meet after we talk to Theos.”
“No,” says Castor. “We don’t know how much longer we’re going to stay here. We have a mission, just like you, that we can’t stray away from.”
“Damn it,” says Pax. “Well, we’ve got to go. C’mon guys.”
I get off my seat and walk away.
“Hey kid,” says Pollux.
I turn around.
“Don’t worry about your people. They’re safe with us.”
I nod and continue walking away. Despite their kindness, I still don’t trust them. I don’t want them to use me or my friends.
