Blackbird's Writing Dump

For anyone curious again, here’s Chess Magic. As of right now, it’s kinda underdeveloped and is work in progress.

Chess Magic

“Chess magic” - An ancient magic which utilizes the power of Chess, creating chessboards and pieces to play with enemies.

This magic mostly specializes in insane utility, which allows for the user of Chess Magic to deal with almost any kind of a situation.

Color variations:

Classic - Classic Black and White Chess.
Classic Green - White and Green Chess.
Royal - Teal and Blue Chess.
Sacred - Yellow and Red Chess.
Void - Purple and Black Chess.

Magic Circle:

insert Ultimate’s magic circle

Icon:

insert Ultimate’s icon

Stats:

Damage: 1.4x
Attack Speed: 1.0x
Size: 1.2x
Destruction: 0.0x

This is the only magic that CANNOT destroy objects.

Mechanics:

Chessboard - Instead of destroying objects, Chess Magic turns into a chessboard material any object that comes in contact with it. (The radius of the spell, not the ENTIRE object). Touching Chessboards will inflict “Checked” status effect on the enemies.

Checked - Being attacked by Chess magic or touching Chessboarded materials will inflict a status effect “Checked”. This effect can stack up to 5 charges.

“Checked - You feel like a white & black danger is present nearby. Run at all costs.”
Checked status effect combines in itself a slowness and blindness effect.
When active, your screen turns black and white, while your character becomes 25% slower. This effect cannot be cleared up by any kind of a magic and doesn’t have any synergies, and it cannot be cleared up the normal way. To clear this effect, your character needs to move AT LEAST 30 studs away from the place you were hit on. If those requirements aren’t met, the status effect lasts infinitely.

When getting 3 or more “Checked” status effects, your character becomes 50% slower.

When getting 5 “Checked” status effects, your character cannot use any kind of a rite, technique, skill or a spell while the status effect is active.

Checkmated - A stronger version of “Checked”. If the target which has “Checked” status effect has it for more than a minute, the Checked status effect gets replaced by Checkmated, which immediately removes 50% of the enemy’s HP, and 3 seconds later kills the target regardless.

Color changing:
Every time Chess Magic user casts a spell, the next spell will be differently colored, for example, user casts a white colored spell, so the next one will be black colored.
User ALWAYS starts with white color.

Piece Customization:
Every single spell that a Chess Magic user has can have an additional thing to edit: Piece.

Any move can have a Chess Piece that it resembles, those being the Pawn, Knight, Bishop, Rook, Queen and King. Pieces change the appearance of the attack and it’s overall stats.

Pawn:
Every spell that resembles a Pawn will have 100% armor piercing buff. If a Pawn Spell inflicts more than 33% damage on a target, the attack will then create a strong black and white Explosion which will summon several flying pawns of different colors around the target, which will then turn into different pieces, from Knight to Queen. Each one of them will then damage the target further.

Knight:
Every spell that resembles a Knight will have 20% more speed, and also the Knight projectiles will curve their path to be unpredictable, AND if any enemy is nearby the target, the Knight spell if hit the target will split up to deal damage to the next enemy, jumping from enemy to enemy until coming back to the user like a boomerang.

Bishop:
Every spell that resembles a Bishop obtains 40% more attack speed and after hitting an opponent twists itself to hit the enemy second time, this however, decreases the initial hit’s damage by 45%, that being 55% of the initial hit and 55% more damage with a second hit. Second hit can be blocked.

Rook:
Every spell that resembles a Rook obtains 20% more size and higher clash rates, increasing all the clash rates of Chess to other magics by 0.2x. This, however, makes the ability 10% slower.
Example: (Chess Magic has 1.0x neutral clash rate against Metal, with Rook having 1.2x clash advantage if it’s a Rook spell that clashes.)

Queen:
Every spell that resembles a Queen will have it’s damage increased by 5%, attack speed by 10%, clash rates increased by 0.1x, (1.0x → 1.1x), attack size increased by 10%.

King:
Every spell that resembles a King will not give any stat advantages. Instead, King spells, when impact (Explosion spell being cast, Beam and Blast colliding with something and etc.) will shoot out 6 black and white pawns which will orbit the user. These pawns will sacrifice themselves to deflect incoming hits, reducing the damage to 0 and possibly hitting the attacker with deflected projectile.

Changed spells:

Some spells got changed visually. Instead of being white and black bursts or Chess pieces.

Explosion shockwave: User creates a shaking and bursting Chess board instead.

Explosion Pillar: User creates a giant Pillars of Chess board material which then bursts, making the White and black cubes fly around.

Javelin - Instead of spherical explosions, the Javelin creates cubic chessboard explosions.

Pulsar: Same thing.

Surge: Depending on the Piece chosen, Surge shoots out a lot of chosen pieces.

Placed Explosions with a Chess piece chosen will have an animation where the chosen piece slams the ground with an Explosion.

Unique spells:

As an Ancient Magic, Chess Magic has it’s own unique spells. Those spells are exclusive to Chess Magic. They can’t be edited unlike normal spells.

Promotion - User jumps highly, a lot of pawn afterimages appear and then user powers up, increasing all his geat stats by 15%. Such spell has a very long cooldown.

En Passant - User creates two diagonal slashes in front of him in a cone shape. If there’s any enemy between the slashes or to their side, it will start an animation where the user dismantles the victim and then smashing it with a pawn.

Ultimate Fork - User creates a Knight in front of him, which will have an AOE set up around him. Anyone within the radius of AOE of the Knight will be stun locked in place, and after 3 seconds the Knight will jump onto the victim and crash onto them.

Twin Bishop Massacre - User creates 2 bishop around the cursor which then rotate and slash around, dealing high damage to everyone in AoE. Similar to Beast Instinct.

Castle - User creates a big rook in front of him which defends him from incoming projectiles.

Rook Smash -
User spawns a giant rook above the cursor which then crashes onto the ground. High damage, applies effect “Stunned” which is similar to Paralyzed.

Queen Destruction - User charges up and then emanates a big self explosion of white and black colors.

King’s Gambit - User creates a pawn in front of him and then slashes it, obtaining 30% resistance and heals up 300 HP. This reduces the user’s damage by 5% for 20 seconds.

Chessboard - User creates a giant 8x8 Chessboard under him. If any player got inside the chessboard, both user and the target will be locked up in a chess game with the real rules. If the targeted enemy loses, gets checkmated, he will die shortly after because of “Checkmated” status effect. Same goes with the user.

Magic being used for The Showman

'Nightmare' Magic

Ancient Magic
0.95 Damage, 1.5 Speed, 0.8 Size

Effects of the magic take on the appearance of scarlet flames, with the brighter portions being slightly shifted pink.

On hit, the magic applies the “Incinerating Soul” debuff. For the duration of the debuff, the player will take 10% of the original attack’s damage in DOT per tick. In addition, 20% of the damage total damage from the initial attack will be applied as “Soul Damage”, which is unable to be healed until it slowly dissipates over the course of minutes. Incinerating Soul can stack, up to 5 stacks.

Upon 5 stacks being achieved, the next hit will cause a massive burst of flames from the inflicted individual, dealing massive damage - 50% of which being Soul Damage. This Soul Damage heals much slower than normal, likely persisting after the fight if the victim wins.

Created after the War of the Gods, with the first of two recorded mutations occurring in 1020. The first user of this magic was a powerful mage from Norway, renowned for his knowledge of magic and study of spirit energy. Some even rumored he was a descendant of the gods, explaining his interest in spirit energy. Unfortunately, he was killed in The Fracture.

The second recorded user had their mutation occur in 1849 according to Grand Navy records - much less is known about the user, as they’ve attempted to evade the prying eyes of the Grand Navy. This is suspected to be due to criminals ties, however nothing concrete can be found. What is known is that they lead a performance that travels around the War Seas from island to island, putting on an act for free.

Despite the name, this magic has nothing to do with souls. This is but the name that it has been given by the only living user. It was named after the look on the faces of opponents he had beaten - one of pure terror. There is no nightmarish effect, nor is there a mental strain on the victim. Instead, the magic is able to effect the very soul of the target, burning away at it until the fire either goes out on its own… or consumes it entirely.

The Showman

Buildup

If the player previously completed Felix Gates’ questline, upon returning to the island of Solstitium, a quest would be available from one of the non-shopkeeper NPCs on the island - one only identified by their title of “The Showman”. Interacting would prompt The Showman to ask if the player would like to attend their next show for free. Upon acceptance, the NPC would disappear and the player would be given a quest to “Attend the Show”. Depending on the player’s progression, the show will either be in the Azura Province or the Thorne Empire.

The show itself takes place in large red circus tent, illuminated on the inside by torches of various colors - all illuminated by different fire variants. As the player enters, the seats around the center would be full of life, citizens murmuring to one another. They’d be prompted to take their seat on the edge of the stands.

Upon being seated, a cutscene plays.

Cutscene

The camera focuses on the center of the tent as magic spotlights swirling around the tent erratically, eventually all focusing on the center alongside the camera. In a burst of scarlet flames, the Showman is revealed out of thin air, taking a bow before the audience.

“Welcome one, welcome all! My name is Raven, and I can assure you that the show you seen tonight will be unforgettable.” He extends his arms to the air, two small balls of flame manifesting in his palms.

“What we have in store for you tonight is demonstrations of magic unbound - oddities from the depths of the Dark Sea, and a final act to remember! Prepare to be amazed… and let the show begin!” He snaps his fingers, summoning a pillar of flame as he vanishes as quickly as he appeared.

The camera cuts to black for a few moments before fading back in, the cheers of the crowd now audible. The Showman stands in the same placed he vanished, small sparks of flame bursting from the lenses of his mask.

“What a show, I say! Now, for the finale… it’ll be a demonstration alongside a lucky member of the audience!” The spotlights and camera pans to the player, lingering for a moment as red flames engulf them. The camera snaps back to the stage, the player having been teleported. They look around - disoriented, as the expressionless mask of The Showman is the only thing being focused upon by the spotlights.

“Now, my friend, let us duel. The crowd demands a magnificent act - I’m sure you won’t disappoint.”

Fight

Health: Very high - similar to that of the Aegean Sea ending boss.
Combat theme: Absolute Zero

Birds of Cinder: The Showman casts out three bird-shaped blasts towards the player, each with weak homing. The blasts themselves to medium damage.

Ember Assault: The Showman fires out four beams of flame in a square pattern, each one doing high damage on hit. If missed, small groups of homing projectiles burst out from the explosions from the beams. Each homing projectile does low damage.

Blitzing Talon: The Showman teleports to the player, fire flaring around his hands before striking furiously - moving a certain distance after each strike. Each strike is heavily coated in Nightmare Magic, extending the range, dealing medium damage, and inflicting Incinerating Soul. After 10 strikes, he leaps into the air and teleports away, leaving a rain of Nightmare Magic for the player to dodge. Each hit of Nightmare Magic does low damage.

Cleansing Flame: A magic circle manifests at the feet of The Showman and he slams his fist into it, sending pillars of Nightmare magic shooting up from the ground in every direction. These pillars to high damage and expand outward, being nearly unavoidable if in close proximity.

Singing Lace: The Showman casts out a thin tendril of Nightmare Magic that tracks the player, only stopping when parried or blocked. On block, the tendril will swiftly retract, leaving the Showman vulnerable for a moment. If the player is hit, they will be dragged towards the Showman and grabbed - his hand around their neck. A ring of magic circles will appear around the player, incinerating them from all around before they’re tossed aside, dealing extreme damage.

Cloak of Cinders: A magic circle ignites on the back of The Showman’s arms, setting his black cloak alight with crimson fire. The Showman’s next three attacks will do 25% more damage and apply two stacks of Incinerating Soul instead of one.

Blazing Vortex: The Showman teleports to the center of the stage, gathering Nightmare Magic around him as it beings to quickly swirl into a vortex, encompassing most of the stage. The player is naturally dragged in, taking damage over time that increases the closer they are to the center. If at the center, they take extreme damage and are shot out towards the edge of the stage.

Desperation Move - Curtain Fall: Exhausted, the Showman teleports high above the player, pouring excessive magic energy into a barrage that he then unleashes. It takes a spiral pattern, projectiles stacking and overlaying quick enough that - outside of small gaps - it’s impossible to dodge. Each projectile deals low damage, but it’s made up for by the volume and strict movement required to dodge them. Magic circles are conjured all around the player, casting pillar after pillar of Nightmare Magic, slowly encircling them until the final one conjures right on top of them - if not properly timed, the player either dashes into a lingering pillar or is unable to dodge the massively damaging burst of flame.

The Showman slams to the ground, sending out a fast shockwave of Nightmare Magic that deals low damage if contacted. Tendrils shoot out from his hand, creating large pillars of Nightmare Magic around the arena. Coming into contact with these pillars will do high damage. With his free hand, he casts an extremely powerful beam of Nightmare Magic that tracks the player as it moves, spawning blasts that shoot out towards the player from wherever the beam trailed over. He yanks the tendrils downwards, sending the pillars collapsing to the center of the arena and summoning a massive explosion of Nightmare Magic that sears anything nearby and leaves lingering flames.

After this attack, The Showman is too exhausted to continue fighting. A cutscene begins as he bows to the player, his clothes still on fire. “Well done, you have bested me.” He grabs the player’s hand and bows with them to the audience, before teleporting the player away in a burst of flame. The screen fades to black and the player is rewarded with the completion of the quest alongside one of the drops.

Drops
Nightmarish Mask: A white mask with two black streaks down the face, crossing over the center of each eye. Where either eye would lay, red lenses are placed instead, emanating particles of Nightmare Magic. Power/Size accessory, level 410-600.

Showman’s Cloak: A black cloak that covers the back, shoulders, and neck of the wearer. The inside of the cloak is a deep scarlet. Power/Size accessory, level 410-600.

Infernal Flintlock: Unique flintlock. Similar in model to the Bronze flintlock, with scorch marks across the wood and a scarlet arcanium in place of bronze. All attacks inflict Incinerating Soul.

Fun Facts
  • He dislikes killing. In fact, he actively avoids it whenever possible. If an enemy can be paralyzed, knocked unconscious, or otherwise rendered not a threat, he’ll attempt to if the situation permits.
  • He’s completely unaware of the soul-affecting properties of his magic. Some of the surviving opponents of his fights went on to perish as their souls burned up from the flames - he remains unaware of this fact as well. The expression on the face of those he dueled came from the immense damage being caused to their soul as it still burned right after the fight. As such, the most accurate name for his magic would be “Soulflame”.
  • He has a bad tendency to bottle up his emotions. His outwardly kind and patient demeanor doesn’t reflect any of the anger, insecurities, or sadness that he feels inside. He can’t keep bottling them up forever, but he’ll keep it up as long as he can.
  • He joined Felix’s group not out of an ideology, but to obtain extra funds for his shows. Hiring lost and ancient magic users to perform isn’t at all cheap, especially for longer contracts such as some of the ones he currently has.
  • The mask he wears is a family heirloom, however the red lenses are his own addition. They were added for an extra sense of disassociation - he’s a different person entirely on the stage, why should his eyes remain the same?
  • He’s fluent in Latin, having been taught it by his mother when he was a child.
  • He keeps a flintlock on him at most times as an added form of protection - while he’s not the best shot, he can reliably hit a target at 20-30 meters when imbuing with his magic.
  • Shark stew - specifically Sleeper Shark with Coppershroom and a hefty amount of pepper - is his favorite food.
  • “Raven” is just a stage name. His real name is Alex Grimm - he’s ashamed of his given name (but won’t change it out of respect for his parents), opting to go by Grimm or his stage name whenever possible.
