Dragon Flight

and so fuck that shit, if dragons cant fly no one should :goblin:

According to all known laws of aviation, a mage should not be able to fly. Its magic is too weak to get its fat body off the ground.

This logic however does not apply to sirens, because sirens don’t use magic to fly, they use wings.

The mage, of course, flies anyway, because mages don’t care what warlords think is overpowered.

dragons like this have been an extremely common trope for literally thousands of years… nobody cares if it’s realistic, they are THE fictional fantasy creature

Realism isn’t necessarily the problem, it’s the fact that AO is built on “realism + magic”, so unless it’s explicitly explained that all dragons are born with wind magic that they summon underneath their wings to go upwards, it’s contrary to the game’s own lore.

Also, the age of the trope means literally nothing.

Surely you’re joking

It’s based on Greek Mythology + Magic

There are supposed to be realistic elements to the lore, but they aren’t going to be interfering with all the cool stuff that make the story actually interesting

Dragons can fly and exist because they’re mythological creatures, no further explanation is required

Dragons exist because gods made them, gods exist because primordial gods made them, primordial gods just exist. You have to work backwards a bit to make a good excuse for something existing. In this case, creationism made dragons, but creationism is proposed as a possibility for how birds in the real world were made, and birds fly because of aerodynamics.

It’s not believable without that depth.

Universe where Ruby Roger exists btw

wait why did I say that, I’m editing.

I guess you could say that the dragons possess some property in their wings or bodies that makes flight possible

I just do not think it matters

If you’re making sciencey stuff an important part of your fantasy world then it’s probably necessary to explain how your dragons can fly, but the AO lore is not that

The truth is nobody gives a shit why the dragons can fly, we just think dragons are cool and we like seeing them

There are in-game textbooks that discuss the physical dynamics of arcanium and island cloud.
There is an entire small portion of the game that is collecting pages of wisdom, some of which explain how things function.

I suppose that could count as loosely science-based lore

However, I will say, as a writer, I don’t know the ungodly number of hours I’ve wasted working on boring shit to try and explain the existence of every facet of my world. No potential reader will ever care, even I don’t care about those documents anymore

If Vetex wants to include some sort of scientific explanation for dragons and their flight, sure, why not, but I’m sure he recognizes that it is a massive waste of time to work on things that is are just boring to most people who interact with his work

I dunno man, I think that kind of depth shines through.

Actually relevant depth is interesting. Stuff like the magic system or the little quirks of a character

The biology of a specific creature the protagonist sees or fights hardly qualifies imo, unless such features are relevant to the story in some way

If the audience really wanted to know how dragons fly, the author could come up with an explanation, but judging by the replies here, this fandom clearly does not

Just give them hollow bones, man.

Aren’t they a little… big? I’m guessing most of their mass is flesh rather than bone

A weak explanation is much worse than no explanation

hollow bones are about as dense as normal bone, they just provide better circulation

i take a tiny little glimpse at arcane odyssey lore and ignore it
