If you are not likely to be active, do not apply. This isn’t one of those things where you can just enter and then not do anything.
So, I don’t know if any of you have heard of The Pandemonium Institute’s hit social deduction game Blood On The Clocktower, but in essence, we’re going to play that. Here’s the gist.
The Rules
Every (well, in some cases, almost every) player will have a different role. These affect what things you might be able to do throughout the game, and also what information you will get throughout. Some of these roles are evil, and one is a Demon - the Demon will be killing players, and it is the good team’s job to work out who the Demon is before the Demon can kill everyone.
Every “night”, players will be individually messaged in a specific order to use their ability. A lot of these involve acquiring information, however some circumstances may result in this information being false! The Demon will kill, and the dead player will be announced at the start of the “day” phase. Nights may last a while, by the way, because timezones and the game doesn’t work if I send all the messages at once. (Imposing a 24-hour time limit to reply to DMs before I move on to someone else, but you will still be able to reply if you can get it in before the next night). Also, during nights, no player-to-player discussion relating to the game is allowed, but we are working via honour system here.
During the “day” phase, players will have 24 hours to discuss their thoughts as publicly or privately as they want. This can be via forum DMs, Discord DMs, the three Discord VCs I’ve set up with a limit of five people, or posting publicly wherever. After this period, all discussion must be public and, for 24 hours, I will open nominations. This is when players may choose who to vote for to be executed. Only one player may be nominated at once. Each player can only nominate and be nominated once per day. When there is an active nomination, I will pause the 24 hours until it is resolved. The prosecutor will be given a chance to state their case, and then the defendant will. Players must then vote (poll lasting 24 hours). If the majority of players vote to execute, the player may be executed UNLESS another nomination comes in wherein the new defendant gets more votes. After an execution, night starts. It is possible for no player to be executed, whether that be no one is eligible or there is a tie.
by the way nominations must happen here on the forums
As a dead player (murder, execution or otherwise in some scripts), you can still play the game and discuss with others, but your role’s ability no longer works. You receive one Vote Token, which you can use to vote for a player to be executed. When you do this, you lose your Vote Token.
Players may claim to be whatever role they want people to think they are.
Good wins if the Demon is caught. Evil wins if enough players die.
The Script
We are going to be playing using the Trouble Brewing script. Here are the included roles (not all will be used):
Good Roles
Townsfolk
Townsfolk are the standard Good roles with abilities that benefit the Good team. The Townsfolk that may be featured in this game include:
- Washerwoman: at the start of the game, the Washerwoman is told the names of two other players, and learns that one of the two is a specific Townsfolk.
- Librarian: at the start of the game, the Librarian is told the names of two other players, and learns that one of the two is a specific Outsider.
- Investigator: at the start of the game, the Investigator is told the names of two other players, and learns that one of the two is a specific Minion.
- Chef: everyone in the game is listed on my sheet. The Chef will be told the order in which everyone is listed, and learn how many times two Evil players are next to one another. (if a player on the sheet is adjacent to you, they are your neighbour, and you may at any point ask me to tell you your neighbours. neighbours are only alive players so it will change throughout the game. you can ask any time.)
- Empath: the Empath is told their neighbours every night. They are told how many of their two neighbours are Evil.
- Fortune Teller: the Fortune Teller will, every night, choose two players. They learn whether or not one of them is the Demon. There is also one other player called the Red Herring who will register as a Demon if the Fortune Teller picks them.
- Undertaker: each night, the Undertaker learns the role of the player who died by execution today (if there’s any).
- Monk: each night, the Monk chooses a player who is not themself. This player is safe from murder tonight.
- Ravenkeeper: if the Ravenkeeper is murdered by the Demon, they will be waken to choose a player. They learn that player’s role.
- Virgin: the first time the Virgin is nominated, if the nominator is a Townsfolk, the nominator is executed immediately.
- Slayer: once throughout the whole game, during the day, the Slayer may publicly choose a player. If that player is the Demon, the Demon dies. (Note: it is especially important to be reminded that people can claim to be any role. If the Slayer attacks the Demon, the Demon dies. If the Slayer attacks anyone else, no one dies. If someone who isn’t the Slayer claims to be the Slayer and “attacks” anyone, no one dies.)
- Soldier: the Demon cannot kill the Soldier.
- Mayor: if there are three players left alive and no execution occurs that day, the Good team wins. At night, if the Mayor is attacked, the Storyteller (me) has the option to choose for someone else to die.
Outsiders
Outsiders are still Good roles, but their abilities are not quite as useful.
- Butler: each night, the Butler chooses a player to be marked as Master. The next day, the Butler may only vote to execute a player if the Master also votes to execute. (if the Master votes to execute, this does not mean the Butler is required to)
- Drunk: the Drunk believes they have a Townsfolk role, but are actually Drunk for the whole game and so their ability does not work. Being Drunk means your ability does not work, but I will act as though it does, so you may receive false information at night. Obviously, you don’t know you’re Drunk.
- Recluse: the Recluse may register as a Minion or Demon, even when dead. This applies to all circumstances, such as the Slayer targets the Recluse (Recluse may register as Demon and therefore die), the Investigator’s opening knowledge (Recluse and a Townsfolk may be selected and the Investigator learns that one is a Minion even though neither are), etc, etc.
- Saint: if the Saint is executed, Good loses.
Evil Roles
Minions
Minions are Evil players who will know who the Demon is. Their role is to make things confusing for the Good team and protect the Demon, however, they do not HAVE to. If the Demon commits suicide at night, a Minion becomes the Demon.
- Poisoner: the Poisoner chooses a player to Poison every night. This player is Poisoned for the rest of the night and all of the next day. (being Poisoned is functionally identical to being Drunk)
- Spy: the Spy will get to see the Grimoire (my spreadsheet) every night. The Spy may register as a Good role when targeted by another player’s ability, even when dead.
- Scarlet Woman: if the Demon is executed and there are 5 or more players alive, the Scarlet Woman becomes the Demon. Travellers are not included in this count.
- Baron: if the Baron is in play, two Townsfolk roles will be replaced with Outsiders. (For context, different player counts affect the numbers of Townsfolk, Outsider, and Minion roles.)
The Demon
The Demon is the one doing the killing.
- Imp: the Imp can kill a player at night. This can be any player - Townsfolk, Outsiders, Minions, or even themself. If they kill themself, a Minion becomes the Imp. If the Imp dies, Good wins.
Travellers
Travellers will only be used if there are more than 15 players. These roles are exceptionally powerful. If there are more than 15 players, people must volunteer to play as a Traveller until there are 15 regular players and all extras are Travellers. Travellers will have their identities and roles outed to the entire group as soon as the game starts, but not their alignments. A Traveller player may choose which Traveller they want to be, so there can be more than one of each Traveller, but I will still select their alignment. Travellers cannot be executed, but can still be murdered, and there is a third method of death which only works on Travellers: exile. Any player, alive or dead, may call for an exile at absolutely any point during the day. There will be no making of points, and it will go straight to a vote, wherein anyone may vote, even dead players, without using a Vote Token. If the majority agree to exile, the Traveller dies.
- Scapegoat: if a player of the Scapegoat’s alignment is executed, I may choose for the Scapegoat to die instead.
- Gunslinger: each day, after the first execution vote ends, the Gunslinger is allowed to choose one player who voted in favour of execution. This player dies. The newly deceased player’s vote still counts for the first execution vote.
- Beggar: the Beggar cannot vote unless a dead player sacrifices their Vote Token to give to the Beggar. As many dead players can do this as they like. If the Beggar votes, they lose a Vote Token. If a dead player agrees to donate, the Beggar learns their alignment.
- Bureaucrat: the Bureaucrat chooses a player other than themself every night. This player’s vote is tripled tomorrow.
- Thief: the Thief chooses a player other than themself every night. This player’s vote counts negatively tomorrow.
That’s every role that may be included.
Additional notes
This topic is not where the game will be held. It will be held in a separate topic released on March 27th, which is when applications close. To join the game, simply reply to this topic saying that you want to play.
The Forums Event Hub has a BotC category of channels which I think I’ve set up correctly. All updates and discussion pertaining to the game will be centralised there (outside the forums of course)! Here’s a link:
That’s all. Again, don’t apply if you won’t be active. See you on the 27th!
