I’ve had ENOUGH of just talking and/or whining in game discussion. It is time for change.

Introduction

If you’ve seen my topic about WoM’s music, you knew this was coming.
I loved WoM, and while AO’s definitely better by a long shot, I feel like a certain aspect of the game didn’t need to be sacrificed in development. These are the combat themes. The high-intensity combat theme has already returned for rival fights, so why not include the others?

Implementation

Youtube links to the music will be provided for those who might not have heard them.

Battle Theme (Low):

Will not play during every combat encounter. If it did, that’d get annoying.
Instead, it will play:

  • Whenever you’re in combat with a wanted criminal/hero who is below level 160 (this includes rivals).
  • Whenever a player is actively hunting you for a bounty or contract.

I feel that the theme fits the intensity of an unexpected attack from a player, while also not being too intense as to make you think you’re fighting a god when, in reality, the criminal you’re fighting is about 30 levels below you.

Magic Council Battle Themes (Low, High):

Low variant will play when you’re either:

  • In combat with a Grand Navy member below the rank of lieutenant. (For example, assassination contracts)
  • In combat with any marine spawned from “Forces Inbound” while having a notoriety of three stars or lower.

High variant will play when you’re either:

  • In combat with a Grand Navy member with a rank of lieutenant or above. (As stated before, assassination contracts)
  • In combat with any Grand Navy member spawned from “Forces Inbound” while having a notoriety of 4 or higher.
  • In combat with Commodore Kai.
  • In combat with a Grand Navy player who has a bounty on you.

I feel that re-adding the Magic Council themes into the game would be fitting, as actually fighting these guys at notoriety five can actually get you scarily close to death sometimes, and these themes would add to that feeling. I don’t think it’d make the Grand Navy too similar to the Magic Council, as, one, the Magic Council doesn’t exist anymore, and two, Silverhold and the Silent Tower already share a theme.

Conclusion

While I’m not the one scripting the game, I believe that these tracks could be added back in without too much trouble. If these tracks happen to become annoying for players who like the rest of the game’s music, perhaps an on/off toggle for combat music specifically could be added into the settings somewhere.

While I like the idea, and am open to any implementation of more appropriate music for various situations, I still really feel like there are enough people in this community that Vetex could scrounge up a music team for original compositions that have consistent theming with each other. But that would be a little less reasonable, I’m just sorta soapboxing in this reply. More music would be good, kind of sick of getting regular island music (which is typically just…no music) during fights that aren’t bosses.

this would be pretty cool, just the overall idea of having a combat soundtrack for AO is cool, although it is possible this is planned for a more completed state, having WoM music, which is already done and i guess could just be imported then coded in, would fill up the current lack of music that combat scenarios have.

It’s pretty likely, considering Tobi’s involvement in the themes for the Dark Sea, but as StunSeeds already stated, having WoM music as placeholders while something that sounds more naval for the GN and something else for criminal/hero combat is being worked on would be nice.

while not all wom music would integrate properly into ao, there’s plenty that could (alongside just having more tracks for different places) so im glad you’re finally putting that flag down for it

Reminds me that there isn’t that much music ingame. There’s stuff at cities but when you are fighting things in wild islands it’s basically just ambience. This would be a nice addition, and if new music is being planned then the WoM music could act as a placeholder.

If new music is made for combat, then I think it would be cool if the WoM music was a really rare easter egg that could replace the new sountracks.

Something that I’d really like to hear in AO again is the town under threat theme, but there simply isn’t any way for the game to have it outside of a super specific situation in the story that wouldn’t be really complicated and dumb.
It’s fine, though, I know the source of it.

Having it work as an easter egg after newer music (maybe) gets added would be pretty cool, if I’m being honest.

also in case yall are wondering why i put this at four stars its because if i wanted it to be five i would’ve tried to get an actual video editor and edit the music into a wanted criminal fight myself
too bad the only one i know slightly is premiere pro, which is ran by the shitheads at adobe

Details are fuzzy but I think this suggestion literally caused me to have a dream where I was fighting a criminal and the WoM low battle theme started playing and it worked pretty well there, so this would probably work

Plus I hope we get the minotaur theme re-added for one of the sons of Wotan.

i have another suggestion i used that the guy who accepted my application really liked which might be sort of fitting for these themes.
also yeah the sons of wotan thing would be badass
