Edit 1: Put spoiler tag on Skyhall discussion.
Anyone else think that The Order of Aesir is just like… Really Petty?
That’s pretty much all this post is about, like if one looks at all that the Order, or rather the higher ups of the Order have been doing throughout the story, they’re really petty. Which sure, most of the higher ups are petty tyrants, Argos, Calvus, and Lucian are all powerful people seeking more power. But, like who is authorizing this?
Calvus was doing nothing for the Order, only using them to increase Ravenna’s individual power through the abduction of Beringer, and sure he’s a High Lord of the Order, it makes sense that he can make calls like that.
Spoilers for Skyhall: But who allowed Lucian to just, do that? Like, he’s not even a High Lord, he’s a Baron, and not even a powerful one. Skyhall has practically nothing to offer the Order, they aren’t influential in Sea politics, and the most they have in a highly exclusive medical program. So who is just letting this kid, who’s likely less than seventeen, given Callahan seems to be his senior, assassinate the betrothed of the heir apparent to the Skyhall throne? Sure it got Allanon out of the picture, but that didn’t seem planned, from our perspective it seems that the whole thing was a petty plot by Lucian because he hated Liara. Even if it was a power grab to make Lucian the new heir, why not just kill Zenith and Allanon? It really seems like Liara was the main target, since her wound was more fatally delivered than Allanon’s. The most insane thing is that they used the Order’s signature poison to do it, so they’re basically calling announcing themselves in bright purple ink, actively undermining the Order’s secret nature.
The point I’m trying to make is that the Order’s leadership, like all the tyrants in this series are incompetent and petty. They only make decisions which benefit themselves on an individual level, rather than, oh I don’t know, actually contributing to their main goal?
Like, whoever, the true leader of the Order is, (because someone has to be the one commanding the High Lords, a fact apparent by the fact that Calvus ascended to the position after being brought into the Order) needs to get their subordinates under control because they are actively undermining your resources and secrecy and it needs to stop. You are the leader of an ancient secret society bent on controlling the War Seas, you aren’t going to be able to do that if you aren’t able to control your soldiers. So get a grip, because otherwise this whole thing is going to crumble faster than the Arcane Government after the Wrath of The Gods.
