I think there should be shift lock while holding a weapon while sprinting. So far if you don’t sprint and hold a melee weapon, you get shift lock. So why not add it to while you’re sprinting too? It makes aiming the sword much easier.
I think the point of disabling shift lock while sprinting is to avoid players running at you with a sword and being able to aim their swings, so that it becomes more viable to use magic in a fight (which is the intended point of the game) than melee weapons.
Shiftlock is disabled because it breaks movement and does NOT help with aiming.
While that is technically true, OP is referring to when your character faces in the direction that your camera is pointing automatically (which happens when holding a melee weapon while not sprinting) and not the actual shiftlock feature.

there is actually an automatic shiftlock in place while you hold a weapon. you just have to toggle off sprinting first
