The AA webtoon experience (thus far)

TECHNICALLY OFF TOPIC but still related to the game i dunno

So like
I’m a fan of bad media yeah?
SHOWS, ANIME (admittedly not a lot), BOOKS, GAMES, I genuinely can’t tolerate movies somehow
I’ve nurtured that love from a young age, and it’s grown into probably the worst hobby ever. The worst I’ve read was probably this FNAF fanfiction that went on for WAY longer than it should’ve. I’VE NEVER EVEN PLAYED FNAF, NEITHER DO I KNOW ANY LORE REGARDING IT
DESPITE the digital garbage I dig through, I have NEVER read a webtoon, UNTIL

TWO DAYS AGO:
Discovered the AA webtoon is a thing, the way I found it was stupid but not super relevant so I’m just gonna ramble on about whatever comes to my mind because I’ve got nothing else to do
So the start is pretty rough I’m gonna be honest. It’s kinda boring, makes the MC a bit of a Mary Sue. Which, fair enough I suppose, accurate to the original game. BUT THAT’S ONLY FOR THE FIRST 50 CHAPTERS. After the first 50 chapters it’s a fucking GOLDMINE. No, the writing isn’t incredible. The art, while it’s good, it’s not special. It’s just. Goofy (the webtoon, not the art itself).
Now, I don’t take jack SHIT seriously, I believe that’s how I can bear most of the stuff people would consider bad.
So the webtoon tries to be serious and hit deep topics, and really, it doesn’t do a horrible job doing that, example:Theos’ death was done pretty well, Juniper got a bit too edgy after that for my liking. But tbf I’ve never watched my newly appointed father figure die. But it could be better. I can’t exactly say why it’s lacking. To me it just, is. Which is HORRID feedback I know. This is why you shouldn’t take reviews from me super seriously. Some of the dialogue just really falls flat for me
Now one thing I thought was really well done and was a pretty big success was the Kraken, I THOROUGHLY enjoyed that plotline. It turned the Kraken from this boring NPC you’d come across into this genuinely horrific abomination. Edgy? SUREEEEE. But it was the GOOD EDGY. Admittedly I was getting tired of Juniper getting thrashed around by EVERYTHING despite the three years of constant training. Because I’M A PERSON, I’M IMPATIENT. I want to see her be overpowered and just kapow Durza and everyone else outta existence yknow? But it was good, and I personally enjoyed it.
The pacing is also infinitely better compared to AA, when Juniper was supposed to face off against Rupin I was thinkin like. Wuh? Her getting blasted off the island and cooked internally made more sense, lmao. I also enjoy the training Theos and Freedrock gives her. Personally, I think the only improvement for the training chapters would be to make the time skips larger. Like seriously, she only trained with Freedrock for a month? But I suppose she’s supposed to be a fast learner so whatever.
ALSO, another thing that has really kept me hooked is how INTRIGUED I am with the EXTREMELY random yuri sub-plotline, I’m not a huge yuri enthusiast. But it caught my attention REALLY well because of how RANDOM and out of left field it was. I was expecting my emotionless Mary Sue character to just. Win. Against everyone. Through complete, utter BULLSHIT. Instead I got to watch her get thrown around like a football by everything and everyone. AND THEN SHE’S QUESTIONING HER SEXUALITY (kind of, in a really vague way, let me extrapolate) IN THE MIDDLE OF TRAINING TO FACE OFF AGAINST DURZA. Tell me, genuinely, HOW does one see that coming. I will be honest, if ANYTHING it felt like queerbait. The fact that the author decided to actually go through with it BAFFLES me. Not complaining though. I’m just bamboozled by the fact that it actually happened. I am curious where it’s going to go though.

I spent most of my day yesterday chipping away at it because I had fuck all to do. And while I am not done. I can EASILY say that I’m having a blast with it. I said at the start that I enjoy bad medias, and while that is STILL true. I don’t consider this bad media at all. I can’t really call it bad if I’m having a good time can I? (The stuff I would genuinely call bad WHILE I DO ENJOY IT, I have a burning hatred for it at the same time for various reasons, this is different)
I thoroughly believe the first 50 chapters would’ve been better had the author made up their own story, but they’ve stuck to the game lore that Vetex did so, fair enough I suppose.

NOW. Would I recommend this to someone? Depends honestly. I feel it’s for diehard fans of the ingame lore. People outside of that circle would find it extremely unengaging and see no reason to get through the first 50 chapters to get to the fun that is everything else. Then again, I also enjoy it because I know how some of it differs from what happened in the game. Some of the jabs to AA wouldn’t really be funny so, I dunno.
If you’re kinda stuck up and have high standards for what you read. I’d say nah, don’t bother. But if you want to just turn your brain off and have a nice time, absolutely. Go have fun. At times it comes off as kinda cringey and/or edgy. BUT WHO CARES. Have fun, enjoy yourself.

I’ve also noticed that the updates have slowed drastically within the past two years. Not really sure why, but admittedly I haven’t looked super hard. I’ve got NO idea how close it is to the end of the story. But I do hope that it can be finished while my interest in this fandom still lingers.

So, now that I’ve exhausted my ranting energy. I’m going to maybe read some more as I fall asleep, because I spent WAY more time on this than I should’ve. But again, Who cares. I had fun, and that’s all that matters.

SO, @LittleShrekSheep Keep up the great work m8. You’ve made a story that me (while I still haven’t finished it) and plenty of others have thoroughly enjoyed. That’s something you should be proud of. And I’d also like to say, thanks a million!
Even if it stuck with the Mary Sue character, that’s ultimately what the AA character was lmao. I’d have enjoyed seeing the AA story told through a webtoon regardless. You just made the experience that much better.

Immediately edited this because I didn’t like my wording on some things and also feel I didn’t talk enough on one of the subjects. but that’s bound to happen whenever I re-read something I just typed out

It usually is the sequels :sob:

(as for the tolerance I’d say your attention span can’t tolerate 1-hr long or longer movies)

(as for the slower uploads more recently, that’s mostly because there was a family incident for Shreksheep a few months back, plus university to deal with)

I wouldn’t super understand my attention span being the problem, seeing as how I love to watch stupidly long video essays on occasion. The few movies I do like to watch are TANGLED and the first three Pirates of The Caribbean movies. Love those.
I can sit and read through junk for genuine hours. Can watch a series for whatever reason, but rarely will I try out a movie for the hell of it.
I’ve got an idea it’s because I feel more inclined to watch an animated show than to watch a live action one.
It’s strange, I dunno.

I was assuming it was something related to life getting busy. The family incident sounds worrying though. Hope things went well there.

You pay more attention to things that actually interest you, I suppose?

(same lol)

so basically ao needs more yuri plotlines

Yaoi hasn’t been proven detrimental either

Unlike heteroslop :face_vomiting:

Elaborate pls

Liara only existed to get stabbed and die so vetex could have an excuse to make us suffer the fight against a flying lost magic user

Oh yeah that was just genuinely bad writing :sob:

Yeah, I noticed too that the moment theos dies, the writing immediately becomes better lmao

The moment they can write their own story instead of adhering to what vetex wrote, the story becomes better…

I suppose? Still doesn’t SUPER make sense to me because I’ll read/watch stuff that aren’t movies I’m not interested in and whatnot. But it’s whatever, not super detrimental to my existence as a human being.

I mean, wouldn’t complain about a random yuri plotline if it was done well. Any romance plotline would be chill with me if it was done well.

LMAO we’d be fighting Allanon either way, Vetex just decided that his betrothed getting shanked was the best way to make him fight us.
Me personally, I would’ve made him racist.

The moment we get yuri and yaoi content is the moment this game will have a consistent 10k players and a future proofed reader base for the books.

Imagine how much bank Vetex can make off the fujoshis by having some scene between Silas and Morden that may or may not imply romance, actual money printer :money_mouth_face:

Might as well throw in some werewolf and other monster shit while we’re at it too.

i do think the arc where they meet with that one woman who i’ve forgotten her name (i think she was later revealed to be a descendant of artemis’s or was it apollo’s oracles), that arc was so good and the design of the main antagonist was just so cool

Can’t believe I didn’t see this earlier but WELCOME TO THE CLUB!!! Always fun to see another person get absorbed by the webcomic

Real asf, I genuinely installed the webtoon app solely for the webcomic lol

Ironically I’m a bit of the opposite, I actually kinda miss edgy dumbass Juniper, especially the way she bounced off of Angel. Just the way her being “dark” would clash against her airheadedness was fun for me, though I can definitely see it overstaying its welcome

Honestly I think the timeskips should be redistributed rather than extended. The one major gripe I have with the story of the webcomic is that I feel the 3 year timeskip should’ve been 1 year max

Literally nothing would feel different - she still easily could’ve trained to the point of withering, discovered equinox, become jaded, etc. in 1 year, especially since besides the hair/personality it kinda felt like she stagnated. And honestly shortening the timeskip might’ve been improved the story in terms of the world around them:

  • Arthur and his literal god buddies not being able to obliterate Durza’s army themselves is already dubious at best for me (Theos did it “with ease” against a stronger Durza), let alone waging a stalemate/losing war for 3 whole years
  • Kraken didn’t seem to really do anything over the 3 years? I mean I guess he could’ve just been terrorizing villages but I feel like the AG would’ve done something after 3 entire years of him being insane, esp since they didn’t have to focus as much on the OSPs since they were at war

So if the 3 year timeskip had been 1 year instead, I do feel that it would’ve flowed a bit better

SO TRUEEEE, I myself am incredibly yurirotted so I was already shipping Juniper and Veronica then Juniper and Angel in my delusions but when the latter got outright confirmed I was genuinely baffled and giddy. I still would’ve stuck with the webcomic even if Juniper and Angel didn’t happen but after it did I knew I was in it until the very end

100% agree with you here, like you said a big part of the enjoyment from the webcomic comes from knowing the world and lore already. Even if it’s just a little bit, that knowledge makes seeing it come to life in a non-game format even better

Ah man the days when Sheep was somehow pumping out an episode a week truly were golden… But that wasn’t sustainable at all, especially since Sheep’s doing this mainly as a passion project - weekly content creation on that scale is basically a full time job. According to the episode posts, the past couple of years have been incredibly busy and even rough for them so that’s why it’s slowed down so much

On paper we’re in the very last arc of AA so like 80-90% done assuming Sheep doesn’t add too much more original content, though I haven’t a clue how long it’ll take us to cross this last stretch. I totally feel you with that last bit though, I’ve been following along for 6+ years and have been losing steam in the fandom. The only things keeping me here still are the webcomic and the lore :sob:

I believe I am going to have to read this later. From glancing at it, it seems like you’re talking about stuff I haven’t seen yet. I’m at the part where they’re investigating the bleached haired people. Correct me if I’m free to read this spoiler free though. Haven’t been able to read much the past few days because I haven’t gotten a lotta time to myself.
Good motivation to make time though lol
