TECHNICALLY OFF TOPIC but still related to the game i dunno
So like
I’m a fan of bad media yeah?
SHOWS, ANIME (admittedly not a lot), BOOKS, GAMES, I genuinely can’t tolerate movies somehow
I’ve nurtured that love from a young age, and it’s grown into probably the worst hobby ever. The worst I’ve read was probably this FNAF fanfiction that went on for WAY longer than it should’ve. I’VE NEVER EVEN PLAYED FNAF, NEITHER DO I KNOW ANY LORE REGARDING IT
DESPITE the digital garbage I dig through, I have NEVER read a webtoon, UNTIL
TWO DAYS AGO:
Discovered the AA webtoon is a thing, the way I found it was stupid but not super relevant so I’m just gonna ramble on about whatever comes to my mind because I’ve got nothing else to do
So the start is pretty rough I’m gonna be honest. It’s kinda boring, makes the MC a bit of a Mary Sue. Which, fair enough I suppose, accurate to the original game. BUT THAT’S ONLY FOR THE FIRST 50 CHAPTERS. After the first 50 chapters it’s a fucking GOLDMINE. No, the writing isn’t incredible. The art, while it’s good, it’s not special. It’s just. Goofy (the webtoon, not the art itself).
Now, I don’t take jack SHIT seriously, I believe that’s how I can bear most of the stuff people would consider bad.
So the webtoon tries to be serious and hit deep topics, and really, it doesn’t do a horrible job doing that, example:Theos’ death was done pretty well, Juniper got a bit too edgy after that for my liking. But tbf I’ve never watched my newly appointed father figure die. But it could be better. I can’t exactly say why it’s lacking. To me it just, is. Which is HORRID feedback I know. This is why you shouldn’t take reviews from me super seriously. Some of the dialogue just really falls flat for me
Now one thing I thought was really well done and was a pretty big success was the Kraken, I THOROUGHLY enjoyed that plotline. It turned the Kraken from this boring NPC you’d come across into this genuinely horrific abomination. Edgy? SUREEEEE. But it was the GOOD EDGY. Admittedly I was getting tired of Juniper getting thrashed around by EVERYTHING despite the three years of constant training. Because I’M A PERSON, I’M IMPATIENT. I want to see her be overpowered and just kapow Durza and everyone else outta existence yknow? But it was good, and I personally enjoyed it.
The pacing is also infinitely better compared to AA, when Juniper was supposed to face off against Rupin I was thinkin like. Wuh? Her getting blasted off the island and cooked internally made more sense, lmao. I also enjoy the training Theos and Freedrock gives her. Personally, I think the only improvement for the training chapters would be to make the time skips larger. Like seriously, she only trained with Freedrock for a month? But I suppose she’s supposed to be a fast learner so whatever.
ALSO, another thing that has really kept me hooked is how INTRIGUED I am with the EXTREMELY random yuri sub-plotline, I’m not a huge yuri enthusiast. But it caught my attention REALLY well because of how RANDOM and out of left field it was. I was expecting my emotionless Mary Sue character to just. Win. Against everyone. Through complete, utter BULLSHIT. Instead I got to watch her get thrown around like a football by everything and everyone. AND THEN SHE’S QUESTIONING HER SEXUALITY (kind of, in a really vague way, let me extrapolate) IN THE MIDDLE OF TRAINING TO FACE OFF AGAINST DURZA. Tell me, genuinely, HOW does one see that coming. I will be honest, if ANYTHING it felt like queerbait. The fact that the author decided to actually go through with it BAFFLES me. Not complaining though. I’m just bamboozled by the fact that it actually happened. I am curious where it’s going to go though.
I spent most of my day yesterday chipping away at it because I had fuck all to do. And while I am not done. I can EASILY say that I’m having a blast with it. I said at the start that I enjoy bad medias, and while that is STILL true. I don’t consider this bad media at all. I can’t really call it bad if I’m having a good time can I? (The stuff I would genuinely call bad WHILE I DO ENJOY IT, I have a burning hatred for it at the same time for various reasons, this is different)
I thoroughly believe the first 50 chapters would’ve been better had the author made up their own story, but they’ve stuck to the game lore that Vetex did so, fair enough I suppose.
NOW. Would I recommend this to someone? Depends honestly. I feel it’s for diehard fans of the ingame lore. People outside of that circle would find it extremely unengaging and see no reason to get through the first 50 chapters to get to the fun that is everything else. Then again, I also enjoy it because I know how some of it differs from what happened in the game. Some of the jabs to AA wouldn’t really be funny so, I dunno.
If you’re kinda stuck up and have high standards for what you read. I’d say nah, don’t bother. But if you want to just turn your brain off and have a nice time, absolutely. Go have fun. At times it comes off as kinda cringey and/or edgy. BUT WHO CARES. Have fun, enjoy yourself.
I’ve also noticed that the updates have slowed drastically within the past two years. Not really sure why, but admittedly I haven’t looked super hard. I’ve got NO idea how close it is to the end of the story. But I do hope that it can be finished while my interest in this fandom still lingers.
So, now that I’ve exhausted my ranting energy. I’m going to maybe read some more as I fall asleep, because I spent WAY more time on this than I should’ve. But again, Who cares. I had fun, and that’s all that matters.
SO, @LittleShrekSheep Keep up the great work m8. You’ve made a story that me (while I still haven’t finished it) and plenty of others have thoroughly enjoyed. That’s something you should be proud of. And I’d also like to say, thanks a million!
Even if it stuck with the Mary Sue character, that’s ultimately what the AA character was lmao. I’d have enjoyed seeing the AA story told through a webtoon regardless. You just made the experience that much better.
Immediately edited this because I didn’t like my wording on some things and also feel I didn’t talk enough on one of the subjects. but that’s bound to happen whenever I re-read something I just typed out
