The Dark Sea is a mess

god weeps

Or just bring a group of people and kill the thing twice. Everyone gets a piece of gear that works and a lot of meat. Also yeah the omen is rather boring and very punishing if it even worked 50% of the time instead of 20%.

Yep. Only thing worth going for dark sea is just the reagent resupply, and that isn’t guaranteed. That, Hecate and ATL essence which rarely drops at all, even on tougher enemies.

Came here to see if I was just getting the worlds worst luck and I’m so glad to see almost every problem I have with the current state of the dark sea brought up. I have to say a lot of what I’m about to say only applies in the far reaches, but then again what reason do you have to be in i0 through i2 now that fleets exist other than to collect Athena’s wisdom or atlantean essence..

I actually did sort of enjoy the far reaches before full release even though it was far from perfect but since FR dropped it’s gone from a chore to straight bs. Say you’re like me and feel like trying your luck for hecate essence, you now have to sit idly by for an unreasonable amount of time while dodging 500 tornadoes, waves, whirlpools, forest structures and maybe some giant krakens if you’re unlucky. And that’s just to get out there. Now you’re there and every time you stumble across an island after another 23 giant forests either an atlantean ship spawns and you’re forced to skip, or a tornado spawns directly in the middle and.. you’re forced to skip. At that point you’re not even getting a chance to play the game. Rinse and repeat trying to survive the game throwing everything and the kitchen sink at you and by the time you can actually get onto an island in peace you now have to pray it’s easily searched because out there it’s probably the size of sameria at least. On top of that it’s unlikely it even has what you’re looking for because for some reason the spawn rate was dropped from 1/3 to 1/12 according to the wiki?? why. It’s not easy to search ONE island. Like everything else out there it feels like an enormous middle finger for no reason but to make it artificially difficult and it’s getting hard to not notice that now when I’ve just been picked up by a tornado that spawned almost on top of me on a mushroom biome island which trapped me underneath one of them, so there was literally nothing I could do but accept death to bad RNG.

I mean it when I say it but when I found the Epicenter that trip took nearly 4 hours and yet it was less tedious than a 2 hour attempt to search the far reaches in full release. It just really needs some attention so it stops being the no fun allowed zone if they’re going to put all the actually useful dark sea loot out there.

Agree with this one

Again agree

Very Unlucky

Wdym by on top of you? also you can save yourself from wave by using harming on yourself.

I have to disagree with you on this one. Thats the whole thing of Dark Sea. I mean beside this I agree with everything you list.

yeah ngl everything they added to it from intential release of the dark sea just made the experience so much worst but my god when that shit first came out so peak i would say a better update than full release.

The fact that you need harming pots to get out of waves…. :st3: :sparkles: thanks vitbex

Yeah, I would use the harming potion… if I had one.

The FACT you have to use unintended behavior to get out of a wave (a thing that spawns continuously) is the most stupid ‘feature’ ever; they should make it like the whirlpool except significantly weaker… or just not let it carry you away with its janky hitbox.

By on top of me I meant literally on top of me; it’s supposed to be visible from afar, but it deadass came up from the water right under me, no signs, no nothing, just spawned.

The Dark Sea is supposed to be dangerous, not just hitting you with small damage things continuously; it’s more annoying than actually challenging, that’s what I mean by a ‘mess.’ There was something about the old dark sea that felt not as punishing for no reason.

The biggest problem with the dark sea, in my humble opinion, is that the way it currently works is awful at making the player feel stressed, but amazing at making the player feel angry. It’s kind of incredible how pissed off I get at the game when I see an acid wave that spawns right underneath me strike my brig and eat a massive portion of my ship’s health, and how little I care when I bear witness to all the eldritch mutated freaks that roam the islands, which end up being atlantean essences at best or inconveniences at worst.

Supplies system was the worst thing ever, you can barely get to i3 before you have to turn back because otherwise you wont have enough supplies for the return trip

Fully agreed.

This may be a bad example, but it’s the only one I can figure out on the spot; Think of a horror game, its purpose is to make you feel afraid and stressed about the situation at hand… but never specifically angry against it, as it’s not supposed to be unfair or boring.

The Dark Sea fits the horror vibe really well, you’re sailing in the ruined sea of the world… except as you said, it doesn’t, it just feels like you’re sailing straight for fifteen bajillion years only to get hit by a shadow tornado and get reset all the way back to the War Seas.

I’m really contemplating if the current Dark Sea design fits or if it needs a complete do-over on the game design aspect of it, because the concept is fine, execution is not.

What’s worse is I do genuinely think they were on the right track since they kinda nailed the general ambience in the dark sea but it’s just constantly drowned out by everything else. There’ve been a few times where I’ve gotten lucky and the constant weather effects took a break which just left me alone on an island with the ambient track and the rain and it was genuinely unsettling. I think even ducking the volume of the weather excluding the rain once you get onto an island then giving the atlanteans some sound effects and random pathing to increase the chance of running into them when you don’t expect to would be kind of terrifying.

I love the unknown nature of the Dark Sea, but in the very few runs I’ve done, it has basically all become… known.

You know where the enemies spawn, you know your ship will be half destroyed while you are looting on an island, you know you have to sail for half an hour straight only to turn around because you don’t have supplies, it’s so fucking depressing.

THIS. My god. While hecate hunting I randomly heard howling but mistook it for a horn or something and it genuinely gave me chills lol I wish stuff like this happened more. I’m pretty sure it was one of the invisible wolves but I was still checking my corners after it :sob:

this is worsened by the fact that fleets have just ruined the mystique of the dark sea

why the fuck would i go into the dark sea and risk losing shit + wasting my time when i can just send a bunch of ships to get 100x what i could have gotten on my own with minimal loss?

Psuedointellectualism is best saved for reddit, dawg, not here, I just think you look goofy. And yes, it IS doomposting, you act like the game is gonna fall apart on the spot.
You want me to drop a dark sea overhaul? I can. I aint gonna do it in a random game discussion topic though, and I ain’t gonna do it right now. There’s a lot of simple ways to improve the dark sea by focusing on endurance over tedium. If you can’t see that, well, I am glad you arent the one devving for this game.

I can see you typing, and I just want you to know, I am not going to read it. I don’t care.

Are you using artifacts? I can pretty comfortably make it to i3 and back without using any supplies at all

  1. Old Dark Seas isn’t just some stupid ass rock spawn inside another rock. We have clear water in early range, so we can just venture anywhere we want.

  2. Kraken

  3. Lag. Like real bad.

  4. There not much thing spawn inside it. I swear I was prepared for Atlantean Brigs but the one killing me is fricking water poisoning cuz I was busy fighting bear and dont realize I got water poisoning. My fault but still.

Either way, I still disagree on Waves and Tornado spam. It is what makes dark sea, dark sea. Prolly give like proper guide in the damn guidebook once you enter dark sea. Like for common threat like water poisoning and waves.

Thats why I suggest better reward system. Like Fleet still give Dark Sea reward but like I1. Like no fricking way I want to climb mountains for 2 sealed dark chest. Well I infact did it but I do it for the love of the game not for the reward. The fun of getting chased by warlord Nightmarish Atlantean with autotracking skill is very fun.

The lag is ESPECIALLY BAD, it’s not even the drop in FPS is too major, it’s the latency that increases tenfold, it takes a solid 2 seconds for sails to raise or drop.
