I know it sounds like complaining, and I apologize, but I am trying to be more observant with it. Even with well over 1.3k hp, even blocking/parrying does almost nothing to negate his damage, even if I am over 100 levels deep. Why does he have to deal 300-500 damage on normal attacks, and also combo his blast barrage to 1k plus damage? Any assistance on helping me get a better idea other than “Parry, dodge and block”? Perhaps a good stat setup?
Calvus’s gimmick is interrupting his attacks, therefore try using the pillars and his own throne as cover, but don’t stand too close to them, as to avoid the aoe. Try damaging him whenever he charges up anything, for his attacks to get weaker.
Don’t tank his hits, shoot and dodge instead. Also, his infamous 500! 500! 500! won’t reach you if you’re high enough above the ground
Will do, thanks.
i’m impressed you’re struggling with him ngl
dodging is better than parrying but if you notice you won’t be able to evade the attack on time just hold G or whatever your block key is to reduce some of the damage. if your aim sucks then just wait for him to use some dumb attack because most of his moves are easy to punish due to their long windup
Calvus’ attacks are for the most part heavily telegraphed so I recommend paying attention to what he does as windup before he unleashes moves
Also, his attacks are extremely sequential, he’ll always repeat a specific pattern in both phases, so use that to your advantage. For example, he’ll fire an aether barrage and then always do an iron-leg slam towards your direction, followed up by a shockwave kick
the bosses coming up next only get WAAAY harder lol
never stand still, remember that you can block/parry while dodging, and if he’s ever charging runes above his head you need to hit him to cancel the 1,500 damage attack
Been playing AO for a while. Farmed Calvus quite a bit, too.
Lemme just say that he is (unfortunately) the best-designed boss in the game, and, as Dubious pointed out, he has patterns, telegraphs, and tells. Here’s some advice:
General
- Several of his moves have an “afterblow” in stage 2, as do some in stage 1. Sometimes it’s worth throwing up a block even after you get hit.
- You can leave the Castello and find a blacksmith and other merchants, you’ll just have to leave Ravenna to do it, as going into any of the cities will insta-kill you.
- You can get out of the Castello by going down the hallway opposite of where Morden and Julian are fighting, then breaking out of the window. Stay out of the city, and dock your ship.
- If you have any food items, now would be the time to use them. You won’t face a boss quite like this for a while in the storyline, so eat anything you need.
The 500! 500! 500! Beam
- If you don’t see him for a bit, look up. If there’s a magic circle directly above you, he’s charging up their attack. You have about 8 seconds since the beginning of the charge to find him and land an attack. The sooner you hit him, the less damage you’ll take.
- Regardless of when you interrupt the 500 beam, dash away from it.
- If you really just cannot find him, hold G (block) on the ground. Then, when the first a blast hits, dodge in any direction without letting go of G. This will result in you taking about 250-500 damage, but is better than being hit by the full blast.
Other Dangerous Attacks
- The real most dangerous attack isn’t the 500! beam, it’s his barrage. This attack hits rapidly and will shred your health if you stand still. If you see him using this, focus on dodging, and dodging only. If you try and use a move, you will take massive damage from being immobilized.
- His Array attack (where he summons 5 glowing tridents around him) is similarly dangerous, but takes a while to fire. It’s easy to avoid at a distance, just be careful of being in close if he’s had it summoned for 5 seconds or more.
weirdly enough, I do parry most of his significant attacks and it’s pretty easy to do so
Perhaps try being more mobile and before your attack interrupts his pillar attack Dash out. His pillar aim is stationary once its activated
He spends like 50% of his time charging attacks, as long as you use low-endlag moves (like gun lmb) and keep moving you should be good
Watch out for the array spell though, that can mess you up
Preferably fight with a DoT magic (and high enough damage to proc said dot) so it also helps in interrupting calvus’ attacks (the 500x3 beam as well, in my personal experiences applying DoT before he charges makes the beam only do 35x3 damage)
I would give that to his father actually
Yeah, stealth users should just kill themselves anyways
Sshhhh! Spoilers!
He’s manageable if you know his patterns, or are just max level 175. But Calvus ain’t nothing compared to Ivar, you’d wish you were just fighting Calvus again, Ivar is just stupid!
Ssshhhhhh!
Spoilers!
He needs to know! He needs to know about the horrors we have faced in this odyssey!
agility removal made him harder
uhhh i meant MY dad actually
yeah his belt attacks are unavoidable and do way too much damage
he’s not
Calvus is easy compared to a certain Jarl Ivar.
If I may:

I’ma keep it real with you. Jarl Ivar had slight amounts of RNG in the fight because you can’t aim in VR (so I had to spam close range aoe moves), but Calvus was easy.
When I was playing AO in VR I never failed to kill Calvus with atleast 50% of my health remaining. Calvus is balanced, you’ve just got to understand his movement patterns, press the sacred G key, interrupt him when he’s charging up his moves, and dodge. Difficulty wise Calvus was a 3/10 and Ivar was a 6/10.
