People seem to forget that there is bad art
Not every art needs to be at the peak of its artform to be considered. Photography is art, even if it is lackluster. Coding is art, even if it is the most basic function. The only requirement for art to be art is intent.
You create because you need to create, because it is human to create. Art is an expression of your mind, is capturing a moment, an idea. Art requires intention, it requires drive and will, and it requires courage.
The art within A.I. is A.I. itself, it’s a code capable of understanding input out of human speech. The real A.I. artist are those who programmed it. The art is in the code that made all of this possible. And it was as disruptive as it gets.
The images, the texts, and everything in between, are not art. Not because they lack in quality, but because they lack in intent.
If the process through which A.I. produces an image is akin to mashing thousands of pictures together and spitting out a result, why is it any different than an artist using countless references to get to their results? The answer is intent.
As we have today, A.I. cannot prompt itself to create. It requires a human being to comission it. In doing so you end up with something that’s too autonomous to be considered a tool, but too dependant to be an artist. There are nuances that the human mind can’t really put into words, and the machine consciousness can’t quite grasp yet.
All this to say, the moment the first A.I. model generates an image of it’s own will without being prompted, i’ll be in the first row ready to cheer it on.
Right now, A.I. is at best a tool too complex to be used effectively, or a pseudo artist being overworked and abused for entertainment and profit.
I think i talked more than i should’ve lol. If you made it this far, look it up “the nameless city”, there’s a video on this game by “the librarian” and it is one of the few cases of A.I. being actively used to achieve a result you otherwise couldn’t.
