Defense on Shields

a cartoon character says this is insane in front of an invincible logo
okay i guess everyone has separate experiences and ideas

leap slipped my mind and you’re right it covers more distance than t-jump depending on what you set it to.

i’d need to double check the exact weight to mobility conversion formula to give you a confident answer on that, i was working off amuka’s ingame test rather than the raw numbers.

valid, warriors do have ranged skills, but their effectiveness at range still pales compared to a mage who’s optimized for it, so closing distance is still generally the preferred gameplan for most warrior builds.

from the wiki:

| Overlay Ardent | Ardent | -0.20 Shield Blocking Power |
|----|----|----|

-50% Weight

fair

is there anything on the wiki about the movement reduction calculations? i already knew what ardent did on shields, i’m moreso curious about the reduction itself

yeah, nevermind. i’m having trouble finding the movement reduction itself.

They have gun

guns are not the primary damage source for any weapon class. warriors, warlords, conjurers and knights are built around weapon skills which vary in range and AOE. the bulk of their damage still comes from closing distance and using mid/close range skills. meanwhile a mage’s entire gameplan IS range. most spells are designed to be used at a distance, so a mage taking a slight mobility hit from a shield still operates comfortably within their intended range. a warrior taking the same hit is actively fighting against their own gameplan every time they need to close distance.

Warrior has the most mobility skills

i would also like to mention that when you don’t use the two shields that give the most defense it’s genuinely unnoticeable

just tried this, my regular jumps, dashes and T jumps feel ever so slightly worse but mobility skills feel the exact same, and i can guarantee you that the only reason I can notice the difference is because i have played this game for an embarrassing amount of time

150 defense for 0 drawback whatsoever isnt good game design

okay but one shield without a penalty doesn’t mean all shields are broken, and weight feeling the same could just mean 150 defense isn’t actually that much compared to what you get from armor anyway, you’re acting like this one example proves the whole system is fucked when it’s just one item variant

mages need mobility to kite and escape just as much as warriors need it to close distance, the penalty hits everyone the same way you’re just saying it matters less for mages because they fight further back, but getting slowed down when you’re trying to reposition is still a penalty regardless of your playstyle

ngl should shields give like half defense bonus while keeping 100% of its agility penalty to non weapon classes

ardent giving no real downside to non weapon classes was always a bit of an oversight tbh, blocking power reduction means nothing if you werent getting the blocking power bonus to begin with.

honestly just make ardent reduce defense instead on shields. suddenly non weapon classes actually have to pick between mobility or defense, both options hurt now. if you want to run around freely you’re giving up the whole reason you had the shield on in the first place.

that works too, half defense with full penalty actually makes both sides of the tradeoff feel real.

that’s just gatekeeping again and it’s honestly worse because other classes still get free defense just slightly less of it, at least fatwhale’s original proposal was clear about what it wanted even if it was ridiculous instead of this wishy-washy compromise that solves nothing

you continue to fail to explain why gatekeeping things to certain classes is a bad thing

the penalty hitting “the same way” ignores that mobility serves completely different functions for each class. for a warrior it’s the prerequisite to dealing damage at all. for a mage it’s an escape option that exists alongside spells on base movement speed. losing 25% dodge distance when you have several alternative repositioning options is not the same as losing it when closing distance is your only path to relevance in a fight.

that’s exactly what keiko suggested in the formal suggestion thread. ardent becomes a real tradeoff for non-weapon classes instead of a free mobility buff with no downside. go drop it in keiko’s thread if you haven’t already.

half defense with full penalty just makes shields worse for everyone without solving the actual problem, weapon classes get punished for no reason and non-weapon classes still get free defense, just less of it.
