There is no need for a scientific reason for them to fly, their wings can do the job and if you care so much about that detail then whatever, it does not matter, I can’t stress this enough when there needs to be some disbelief for things to happen
To use the Inheritance Cycle Explanation™, dragons rely on innate magic to fly as well as wings. If they didn’t rely on the aforementioned innate magic, all they could do would be hopping long distances
