How to start art?

Ok so I got lazy but I started back on it today and did some more practice with shapes and shit and tried drawing a dude from reference

every good artistā€™s journey often starts rather slow, but Iā€™d say focus on practicing drawing basic shapes and lines in perspective to train your hand to learn structure, thatā€™s what I did at least, and if you wanna draw human bodies, structure is unbelievably crucial for quite a lot of it.

Thereā€™s also something called gesture drawings which use more loose forms and focus less on the actual construction side of a figure in favor of creating a pose, Iā€™d argue this is more useful than structure but Iā€™d still recommend practicing structure first for muscle memory.

seems like ur already kinda doing that tho so sorry if most of this is yap

Understand that like with all practices, progress is not instant.

Oh, and study from real-life photos. Those help you way more than anything else.

I tried another from reference before coming back to this post (so I didnā€™t read anything yet) and got an inbred Kashimo

Hair, Eyes, and Hands seem to be hardest for me

ayo uh uh uh uh h seriously guys how do you start art-
I donā€™t know either :sob:
but the most advice i have is to draw like concepts and stuff me personally I like to draw buildings and ship concepts also Pinterest artists are hella skilled I wouldnā€™t look at their art cause its so good even the best artist here will get envy lol

Idk if this is accurate but I asked a few artist friends + this post and have a kind of guideline although Iā€™m not an artist and am learning art

Compiling from responses they gave me they all seemed to follow this order

Learn Drawing Straight Lines ā†’ Learn Drawing Shapes, specifically Circle, Triangle, Square, and Parallelogram ā†’ Learn Drawing 3D shapes, specifically Sphere, Pyramid, Cube, Rectangular Prism (kindā€™ve same skill as cube) ā†’ Draw those 3D shapes from different perspectives like visually rotate it in your mind and draw it in different perspectives ā†’ Google Draw alongs or draw references and then there are advanced guides for anatomy and perspective(vanishing points) online

I still havenā€™t even done 3D pyramids so ya I kind of just skipped to drawing references and you can actually draw references at any time cause it still helps just remember to still learn the basic stuff

This isnā€™t my drawing my friend started learning art at the same time as me cause I convinced him to and he drew this

Some people just more talented but if I lock in I could probably get decent in a few months

choose a form of medium, traditional, digital or a secret third thing

find something to obsess over, could be your OCs or some franchise, obsession is a powerful source of motivation

theres a more powerful one but, ah,ā€¦

decide what style you want to draw, anime, cartoon, realistic, etc. just browse the internet and looks at some artistsā€™ art style then kill and consume their soul to absorb their art style

watch some tutorials to get the basic down

fuck around and find out

boom, artist

depending on how hard working you are, could take anywhere between 6 ish months to forever before you can be proud of yourself

yeah common stuffs dw, hand is the bane of every new artists lol ( except for the fews that were blessed by god )

i recommend you start on a smaller scale to get the ā€œfeelā€ down, i personally feel a lot easier drawing on a smaller surface

Damn forever is a bit long

Hair

Okay, so, for hair I would advice doing a vague ā€œoutlineā€ of sorts depicting the general area taken up by the hair and a few ā€œendsā€ of it. Seeing as I was just drawing a bit ago, I actually can show you and example of what I mean. Look at the following image, note how the lines for the ā€œhairā€ are literally just a few squiggles to show its form and where the tips are vaguely located at.

Now look at the finished lineart, where I fill in the hair, using the previous crude sketch as ā€œguidelinesā€.

Guidelines like this really helps in drawing hair. Remember that hair has volume and depth, it does not sit flat on the head.

Hands

Always use references for these when starting out. Hands bend in more places than most other body parts, and are not cylindrical or spherical, meaning that different perspectives change how they look significantly compared to the rest of the body.

Iā€™d recommend breaking hands down into simplified shapes, namely a rectangular-trapezoid for the palm, and individual segments for the digits. Generally, you donā€™t want to draw the fingers as one shape without doing the segments, as this will result in you messing up the proportions.

One last bit of advice: the middle finger is generally as long as the longest part of the palm. Use this to compare the lengths of the fingers.

Eyes

Uuuhhhhh, use references and remember that perspective can really mess with your ability to judge these. Honestly, I got nothinā€™ for eyes, lol, I still can barely draw them that well.

this topic should be pinned for other artists to see

oh yeah you can go and ask zel for advices, he practices art a lot so probably knows a thing or two about the more technical side

I had an exam yesterday and was too tired to practice afterwards but Iā€™m back to it today Iā€™ll probably be stuck on hands for a few days(currently still struggling with open palm)

Nahh Iā€™ve been seriously slacking with art for the past year I need to lock in ngl :sob:

As for advice I suggest and I mean heavily suggest learning from YouTube tutorials search up things like how to draw this or that and donā€™t do the tutorial once do it until you have it ingrained as muscle memory

Another thing you needa know is especially as a someone new to art you need consistency like even if you donā€™t feel like drawing draw something for like 15 minutes minimum

Also donā€™t be afraid of drawing outside of your comfort zone yes your going to suck at it but in the famous words of Jake the Dog ā€œSucking at something is the first step to being good at itā€

And something I heavily recommend for someone starting out is learn the basics like drawing 3d shapes itā€™ll really help also study anatomy

Copy other peoples art until youā€™re better than them.

true  imitate then slowly add your own interpretations (dont directly yoink/trace and post it)

More scuffed hand attempts trying tutorials

I might just move on from hands and finish it later cause I donā€™t really see improvement

Know the feeling. But to your credit, these arenā€™t nearly as bad as they could be. You understand the segmentation, which believe it or not, but many get that wrong at first.
