Examples:

The loss of a loved one, which causes humans to be in a state of depression for a long time. Hindering their ability to move and think logically on what to do in their present.
If someone killed their loved one, which causes humans to resort to illegal activities in order to take revenge. They won’t care if it would affect their other loved ones as long as the human killed the person.
If someone caused something bad to said person, when humans experience this, they mostly think of a way that would get back at greater amount than what said someone did to them. In worst case scenario, they choose murdering said someone.
