They operate on a magical energy called “essence” as does every other living creature. This is our little magic power system.
During an experience where one is brought to the very brink of their own death, essence can become damaged, and if they survive, it can then be used as how you’d expect it to as a magic power. It operates off of the imagination of the user, due to it being the foundation of the mind itself.

I’m actually not doing permadeath, it does sound like an amazing permadeath mechanic, but it’s purely for story and creativity purposes. Kinda wish I thought of that, but I still hate permadeath too much to use it.
