(I like to use non-meta magics. The problem is they are non-meta.)
One tiny problem is that sometimes, that isn’t enough
If you use a beam (Does 120 for me, non-double beam) and the opponent has 2k HP (Pretty common berserker), and you are a fire mage (need to do 7% of the opponents Hp to burn them), you need to do (2000 * 7%) - 2000 damage, or 140 damage. Meaning I cant use beams if I wanna do decent damage.

Dodging is important, I’ll agree. Thank goodness for the stamina bonus.
With the whole “Grabs cant change direction”, it doesn’t really matter because even if it misses, it is now closer to you. Because its closer, it can do another TP move or preform another grab.
About the musket: While you are using a attack, they can counter by shooting at you.
Shot has higher damage, and double-beam leaves you open. Plus, its aoe is massive.
Musket demolishes you if you play too far range. And berserker can catch up to you faster than a pitbull chasing after a 12 year old.
Endlang isn’t extreme-extrme, but it does mess you up when ping/fast playstyles are involved.

Immersion shouldn’t outweigh PVP. Its a small, simple change of just preventing weather-things affecting pvp. It sucks when yo are pvping in munera and it starts raining, forcing all parties involved to wait until the rain is over
I mean magic is unbalanced, that why people would change magic. (And about being your favorite, that might mean its your favorite look but not the favorite in terms of damage)

140 is not a lot of damage, and that is why you need double beam
also isnt all dot magics 5% hp dealt
you read the grab, dodge twice, and now youre on the other side of munera again
also grabs share cooldown and tps dont go far (plus they have endlag meaning you can get a shot in
piercing shot has a range limit, and as ive said before, requires really good aiming skill
oh and since i havent said this before: make sure you high jump before a skill (and maybe a magic jump) as that makes you much harder to hit
also shot maybe be braindead but its range is lower than beams meaning you can probably get out of range just by being above them (trust me it is very hard to hit someone above you)
which is why you need to be in motion at all times
they may be fast but smash (main way of close damage) has a pretty big startup especially if they smash downwards
keep in mind ao is like 70% exploration and basically every small feature that is added is for immersion, so i think vetex values detail over combat

but thats why its your favorite is it not, a favorite in damage is still a favorite, however its more closer to metamancing but ehh
and if you do do less damage, then your stats and playstyle should match
its kinda annoying sometimes but as a mage your abilities arent changing to fit your playstyle, instead your playstyles are changed to fit your abilities
i feel as thats what makes non meta builds different from meta builds
instead of using meta because no skill, just get more skill and dont use meta!
it applies here similarly, if you find yourself failing to play well, go what its good for. fire is good for synergies, speed, and mayybe damage, so you want agility and atk speed, while keeping your damage up. (nimble cernyx with powerful arcsphere and power amulet)

Mage doesn’t have any actual problems, players who face mages are still at the mercy of POSITIONING this is why they are called ZONERS, the moment a mage get’s a high ground via a roof or a cliff is where they can reliably cast their spells.
And to be honest with you fast magic such as wind, shadow and probably light are meta due to how reliable they can be on hitting BLASTS a spell that can be used indefinitely with 200 damage if your aim is decent enough.
So really it’s either you focus on Blast aim or focus on your positioning as a mage. (I mostly focus on positioning because Earth blasts are pretty hard to aim long range it’s mostly just predicting at that point.)
EDIT: And there are no best shapes, Drill is just bugged atm shapes are there to cater to your blast playstyle. Just use no shape honestly…
i think the problem with mage rn is, for pvp, you cant use anything that isnt really quick and does good damage
i use metal. cant hit blasts ever really, even with sphere shape which grants extra size. i also got like 100 magic speed but it doesnt help a lot.
so what do i do? i use explosions and beams of course! but they do like no damage, have huge end lag or startup, and someone can just hit a blast or some fs/weapon projectile and do twice as much damage as i just did.
i try playing aggressive to hit metal blasts, but every build in the game has better mobility than mage. grabs, crash, etc all are amazing ways to move around and all mage has is dodges. so people just run away and spam ranged moves on me. fair enough, its how you beat metal, but i have absolutely no way to hit any shots. its simply too good of a counter. plus how ill use snare right next to someone and it wont land, then i get punished with half my hp. and for some reason, even if i spam blasts, hybrid builds like thermo warlord and conjurer builds still outdamage me??? i use metal for christ sake
im not sure how i could fix these issues as i do think metal is just not good rn, but i do wish i could play my funny high damage magic without getting greened everytime
