You could make the same argument about hands you fucking donut
there is a difference between “hands allow us to someday create a world in which we no longer need to struggle to survive, but we may risk destroying ourselves in the process” and “magic allows completely random mentally unstable people to be really really good at killing, sometimes even better than nukes”
Magic is not a moral agent. It cannot be good or bad intrinsically. However, those that use it can.
Hierarchies aren’t intrinsically bad either. Neither is destruction. Neither is inequality, necessarily.
- It also creates and gives good people power, such as Iris Ren Morden and us, the MC.
- Inequality exists prior to and without magic, and the magics are so balanced besides curses that it doesn’t create that much disparity in power from birth. That being said, of course, if someone makes an effort to find lost or ancient magic, they will attain it and gain more power.
- Destruction is a tool that can be used for good or evil. What should we do to evil forces? Politely ask them to stop? No, we should destroy evil forces.
Just my 2 cents
ban guns or any weapon really then by that logic
okay 1
people aren’t born with guns attached to their mind that allow them to easily kill people who weren’t born with them
and 2
are you asking me if the world would be a better place if weapons didn’t exist? like period, didn’t exist, in the universe, in the same way magic doesn’t exist in ours.
true
no, but magic can also be used for good just as well as weapons can
weapons are used for good in the sense that they are used to take down people who are using the same weapons for evil. same with magic. if you’re asking me if i would legally ban magic in the Arcane Universe, i would not.
But everyone is born with ki in the AO universe, which is pretty much equivalent in power as we see characters like Argos and Carina in high ranks as well as our own non-magic awakenings.
you actually make a fair point, AO’s power system is mostly not inborn, but i would argue that “train for years to be able to kill people and destroy buildings effortlessly” is still bad, even if not as bad(?) as “chance to be born with the potential to kill people and destroy buildings effortlessly after training for years”
I don’t really think magic would ramp up the number of deaths as much as something like diseases did before the 1950s. Eventually there’d be technology that makes it nigh obsolete with slight resurgence. Ex: artificial devourers get commodified and are imbued in clothes. Bam magic is useless unless you have a nuclear tier device (legendary magics/lost scrolls/legendary weapons/etc.)
Magic also greatly benefits technological development
I think you’re overestimating how human society would be when you’re tweaking things like how powerful you can get individually. The entire social contract rests upon the fundamental assumption that, no matter how strong someone is, if you get 3 average people to gang up on them they’ll be killed.
This all changes when magic/ki/etc. is added to the equation. Now, it doesn’t matter how many average people you send against the strongest person on earth, they’ll all die in seconds. Suddenly, the social contract doesn’t keep people in line anymore, and the philosophy of might-makes-right is king.
Humans would expand, split into warring tribes over various disputes, devastate the ecosystem around them with magic radiation and physical damage as they fought, dwindle their numbers to very low amounts, then flee to new lands. Repeat until the entire world’s ecosystem is destroyed, and everyone starves to death.
It would not be better for us.
In that case would you like to see how I covered the topic in my anti magic faction suggestion?
maybe it’ll be less bad now that a super powerful curse (absorption) is in the hands of the peacekeeper, who is also trying to destroy all other sea curses (too bad they can’t reach the war seas)
if vetex reveals the death curse is absorption-tier levels of powerful you might be right still, wonder if morden’s gonna snap and become a homicidal dark wizard like the ones in WoM
definitely. the peacekeeper is making the right decision by getting rid of all curses
I haven’t read any of the hundreds of comments here.
My answer: Yes, magic is very bad. Chaos farted onto the universe and humanity don’t deserve the power that lingering stink provides.
We need Febreze to clear the room of this odour. (PK please delete magic energy)
But at the same time, AO players are “special” so you would actually need years of training to do said thing with 1v3
But concidering what world they live in, there aint much to do there honestly
we just need 1 more 9…
698…
699!
