Tbh vetex is great at worldbuilding but character writing is not his strong suit. It kind of peaked with Argos and just kinda went downhill from there
Tech is helping Vetex with backstories and character arcs, he said he helped a lot with Morden’s. Ive got a feeling they cover each other in terms of writing, though Vetex would have the final say.
MC is also impulsive at times, maybe even has hubris (which is fitting for a story with a greek setting)
Its shown more through actions of the MC, but we dont really reflect on those much since this is a game and all. All that you described, MC choosing to fight those people is actually a part of their characterisation.
In one side quest, MC shrugs it off and says “Yeah, I can totally fight those guys” when the guy questions MC’s capability, which does show MC’s confidence in their abilities.
Another of MC’s overconfidence is the one where they taunt the guard in Fort Talos into calling the other guards. Both choices still make you do that.
The rest are purely through actions, in which its only noticeable when you actully reflect on the fact that every quest objective, every move we do are actually choices done by the MC, and thus a part of their character.
They gave away the fact that theyre getting inside Fort Talos to Arwald, the key factor that leads to them getting captured by Ravenna.
Then later, instead of leaving Fort Talos to escape (like what Warren tells us to do) MC still chose to find General Argos’ headquarters.
Then after defeating Carina, she tells you to go to the Castello if you dare, which MC actually does to kill King Calvus, and then they get captured.
These arent really noticeable until you actually reflect on the game itself. MC lacks the ability of think ahead and realise the consequences of their actions. Theyre also overconfident with their abilities, which is why MC is willing to do pretty much anything, even killing a King.
Theres also that bit where MC almost made the group suspicious for knowing abt King Calvus’ death. The fact that only Morden pretty much talks for the entire group with the Queen later gives the funny implication that the group all agreed to have Morden do the talking and NOT MC.
Btw, when facing Shura, the objective is different from the actual outcome of the fight. The objective is actually to defend yourself until you can escape, not to defeat him. This was earlier on with MC having amnesia, so it makes sense that MC was uncertain of their abilities at this point. Though I think its a cool way to convey MC’s thoughts, its sadly hidden away in the quest description.
The only other quest that does this is the “Go to Castello” quest, when youre unable to reach the objective cause you get captured by Julian.
I guess its hard to convey this knowing this is all a game and we just have set objectives and stuff. If only we get actually shown MC’s thoughts more. I mean, theres already a way to do so, theres text prompts from the character when you go to the wrong places and stuff.
they’re all glass canon ig
can they blow up a planet? sure they can
can they survive a gunshot? nope
granted, things like mode can probably help with that, and people with life or phoenix magic are just straight up immune
It wouldn’t be bad in a book tho?
Elantris, Harry Potter, even any book with almost all powerful races (dragons, demons, etc.) does this in a way. It’s completely normal in fantasy books for there to be things you can’t do based off of your luck or where you were born. A muggle cannot kill a wizard (usually), and a non-Elantrian cannot kill an (original) Elantrian (usually).
Of course these books also have other things going for them and the magic system isn’t really what makes them good books, but a magic system that is much more powerful than any other weapon or thing clearly doesn’t doom a book.
I think where the AU is lacking in terms of it feeling that magic is greater than everything else is making it realistically impact the world. Also, the player probably progresses faster than your average mage, as they were experimented on by the order of aethir and could be demigods
i’m scrolling through this and a lot of people are saying how the magic system is a lottery of life and how if you don’t learn magic, you’re screwed over, but i think you all forgot something;
this man, who isn’t even in his prime, has 3 phases, is a mid-sea boss with both high damage and decent health (for mid-sea, anyway), and literally dies, NOT TO US, but to his own attack by knocking down the ceiling.
you can learn how to be proficient and strong in other aspects. you’re not screwed over if you’re not born with magic. Carina is also pretty strong for not having magic, being stronger than Elius, who has it and is likely pretty well trained in using it.
not saying that you’re not at a disadvantage if you’re not born with magic, but i’m saying that hard work and effort > natural born talents and techniques
but i will say fair point, i wish there was some sort of way to more or less “replicate” magics, sort of like how Cursed Weapons in JJK have cursed energy, despite the two main users of them (Maki and Toji) having Heavenly Restriction, aka no Cursed Energy.
that or something like Haki in One Piece, a “secondary” power system that everyone naturally has that eventually outweighs the former in terms of strength, but requires hard effort (though i suppose you could argue that’s done through Spirit Energy?)
anyway enough of my yapping i can’t wait for a boss in the future to get Lightning Gauntlets and scorch my ass despite not being born with magic
(and before you say Sunken Sword, i think that’s a rare case that takes hundreds of thousands of years, i’m not sure)
That already exists in the form of exalted weapons (i.e Arcaninum weapons that were imbued with magic for a very long period of time)
so that’s not a Sunken exclusive thing? does that mean that Calvus’ Triasta being permanently imbued is canonical in that sense too?
sorry i’m not like, up to date on lore or future contents or anything
Given the existence of AA’s legendary weapons, yes
oh okay good to know. that’s another issue, that i didn’t play AA (first Arcane game was WoM and i didn’t even play much of that)
strength routes should get ancient fighting styles that rival ancient magics ngl
just like exalted weapons
We would’ve had those if vetex came up with any ideas for them
Your point on Argos was good. But Carina was uuuhhhh…
There’s a reason we call her Weak-ina.
The reason I have less of a problem with Harry potters world is that it’s not the only way to get very strong (also what the heck in that other one you mentioned) if Harry Potter got into a fight with a sufficiently strong bodybuilder he would probably still lose, you can’t really expelliarmus someone’s fists. In the au, yes general Argos was incredibly strong, but he was an anomaly. He had to train his entire life to even get close to the level some other magic weilders were at. General Argos was fought at around level 80, that’s less than a seventh of what bosses we could be fighting, some of them will probably be the same as Argos in terms of training. The reason I don’t like the aus power scaling in comparison to other genetic powerscaling systems is because in those usually it’s not the only way to get significantly strong.
You can get as far as being the 15th (or among these numbers idk) strongest without magic, being behind probably only the strongest curse users
Tbf this is assuming we’ve seen all there is to the pure weapons/fighting style users right now. 100% there’s gonna be bosses/fighters in future seas that don’t use magic who could probably wipe the floor with Calvus or even Julian.
In the very thread Vetex said magic trumps all he also said that the strongest pure fighters/weapon users (i.e. only use aura and not magic imbuement) can reach TOP 15-25 OF THE VERSE. Do you know how strong that is? At that point you could legitimately defeat a lot of Curse users, who all technically have way more potential than even pure magic users. And don’t forget that these people don’t have extended lifespans like magic users, so they might have actually gotten stronger WAYYY faster
Harry Potter could still probably win lol. Confringo, Diffindo (what a bodybuilder gonna do without his arms?), Petrificus Totalus, and Protego against bullets (Shield Charm | Harry Potter Wiki | Fandom).
Elantris: Elantris
magic is just dumb
except this goofy ahh thing:
my homie
it’s funny that canonically, the player cheeses Argos because his attacks r so destructive that it became his downfall
They took the players memory wipe too seriously
