Hmm maybe start writing small bits and pieces of what you want first? So then you have a general picture of what you want overall

I have a basic idea of what the story would be + other side bits from the main thing, but I don’t exactly have the main character down
thinking of doing what eternal did and put up a thing where people vote what the character is

That could work yeah! Just keep in mind the main character should serve to reflect the themes of the story and/or move the plot along, so it’s good to determine their motivations and whatnot based around those. That’s the general gist of what I do, anyways
