the problem is asking you to mathematically prove it rather than simply restating the conclusion
it might seem intuitive but it’s surprisingly difficult to put down the equations to rigoriously prove it

First, let us start by simplifying (-1) to (-2)+(1) since as you said -1 is the additive inverse of 1, as such I did not use multiplicative property but additive property.
Therefore, the equation (-1)(-1) = 1 will become[(-2+1)(-2+1)] = 1
Using the foil method, it will become 4 – 4 + 1 = 1. Again, considering that your logic is additive inverse.
Solving 4 - 4 + 1 = 1 will result to 1 = 1, therefore (-1)(-1)=1
