well what you say pretty strongly contradicts what most of everyone else is saying.
so far the impression I got while I tried it out was:
1: Cash grab (slot machine shoved in my face on second 1)
2: Buggy (I got the tutorial boss trapped on the ceiling completely on accident)
3: True stun combos (I get you aren’t supposed to survive said boss, but I literally couldn’t move from full hp to 0 after taking one hit) (From what people have been saying here, it isn’t much different outside of the tutorial too)

From character customization to the end of the tutorial, I was being battered over the head with red flags.

People are hardwired to have a negativity bias, I could only think of bad things immediately until I decided to consider what I actually enjoyed about RS.

  1. I’m not going to argue the semantics of what makes a cash grab a cash grab, so I’ll ignore this point
  2. You play arcane odyssey, you should be well aware that games can be buggy, especially on release
  3. I think this is either wrong, an exaggeration, or both. Yes, the Vampiric Dragon Lord is an extremely difficult enemy for new players and you’re not supposed to beat it, but true stun combo? That is definitely not something it does, every single move in its attack pattern has some counter play, people have been able to get it to the threshold where it runs away without it being cheeses with ranged skills.

well I got knocked down by a melee strike, then, while I was still knocked down, it did a breath attack, apparently resetting my stun, and just sorta continued cycling attacks until I ran out of hp.
if that isn’t a true combo, what is???
Frankly, even worse if it was a bug, how did that get through testing?

to clarify, this was the moment I said “fuck it” and left.
if they’re gonna botch literally everything up to the end of the tutorial, why should I expect the game to be any better.

(also the whole super-op tutorial boss really loses its touch when you know its just a fromsoft gimmick that they’ve shoved in just to shove in)

do I even want to know about the death penalty systems and progression?

That was just bs dragon luck. If you take the goblin champ (most fun fight ive had rn imo) boss, it feels a lot like a darksouls boss (i would say sekiro but i haven’t played, also take with salt cause i only played dark souls three and am referencing the first boss guy). When you learn goblin champs moves, you learn when to dodge and parry and it feels satisfying to fight.

they did? It tought me the mechanics pretty well when i first played

Never had this issue in testing, i think it really was just back cycle luck (may have also been mixed with lag depending on when you did it)

death penalty was almost entirely removed other than some xp lost on death to incentivise healing from combat (you used to lose items to pvp in testing).

progression is like most other MMO’s

mostly referring to them trying to squeeze money out of me and the janky end fight.
as for the actual tutorial, they botched part of that too by putting the area with apple trees you’re supposed to harvest for food… before the axe you need to harvest them…???

you can pick the apples from the tree by jumping

Some of the testers were saying the intended level is 20-25

just found out that runes (the thing literally in the name of the game) are put into sort of jewel slots like ao, but the thing is, these are RANDOMLY predetermined once you get an item, so you could theoretically take years killing a boss just for the drop you get to be worse than somebody else’s drop because of pure luck

not really. Most basic runes won’t change much

then literally why call it rune slayer, that’s the equivalent of ao being called jewel finder

thats the basic ones. Mobs drop special runes (there is a deer rune)

in all fairness i’ve never once found one of these and just thought the community was smoking something

I’m saying it isn’t special anymore when its so blatantly copied.

Fromsoft, the company that did it originally, made it one of the things that their studio is known for, a staple of all their games.
When you play a Fromsoft game, you’re going to get your ass kicked in the tutorial.

Is it wrong for other groups to use this gimmick? No, they can do what they please.
It just isn’t special, its already been done, and it isn’t doing them any favors.

And then you have the so-called “advanced” runes that gives % percent stat increases:

The issue with it is that it was executed extremely poorly, not that it’s now common place.

What it is that's wrong with it
  • The boss meant to kill you is forcefully made impossible unless you’ve spent your life fighting it OR decided to cheese it (which can be done quite easily with any ranged classes [ranger and mage] ), this is unlike Dark Souls and Elden Ring in which it is wholly doable after developing an understanding of the combat mechanics.
  • The boss meant to kill you has a game-changing drop which allows you to either get a quick-start or heal during battle, something that quite literally no other item does in the game (other than potions, a limited and consumable resource).
  • The boss meant to kill you is outright the final boss of the game (or at least, something that looks like it could be), it’s overkill and feels unnecessarily cheap.
  • The boss meant to kill you is huge, making fighting it a chore as you can almost never see its animations.
  • The boss is honestly ugly as fuck and loud as hell, making a terrible first impression for a game meant to keep you hooked.

It’s actually really weak in comparison to other rings you could get (I use heavy weapon which has high damage and I get 8 health, and it only activates on crit)

8 health is really miniscule even early game (and early game you get 3 health from it)

It’s more a funny item with no trade value due to soul bound. Any suggestions to the boss though? I can send it in tester suggestions
