THE BIG OL' WREN VICKERS DEEP DIVE
Wren is, if I’m honest, a character unlike any I’ve played before, and I’m not new to the roleplay space. The reasoning for this is quite simple - I have never played a character as troubled, complex, and (initially) outright malicious as Wren. I wasn’t intending to play her that way, but quite early into the roleplay I realised exactly what I could do with this character, and knew that was what I wanted.
To me, Wren is not just a character. Wren is, in her own unique way, a part of me (Jane, Sykadelik, the person writing this whole essay).
(This is where the random forumer backstory not a soul asked for comes in.)
Nearly every flaw within Wren, and believe me, there are a lot, is a flaw of my own, that I have embodied and maybe still embody to a degree, and may even still be buried deep within me somewhere, just within my control. I say “nearly every” truthfully - I obviously have not had the trouble of being presented with magical powers and later hunted by the government for it, and on a more serious note, I don’t have absent parents. I’m actually quite close with my parents. I only wrote that into Wren because I got lazy and didn’t want to characterise them too hard, and it was convenient for the whole arc with Penda (@Amuka). Anyway, I’m digressing.
I’m going to take this back to when I first submitted my character, I chose the Poison Curse. As I said, initially this was a whim, but I quickly realised this was the best choice, narratively, that I could’ve made for her if this was how I wanted to play her. The truth is there have been times in the past where I’ve been, in a sense, a poison to those around me. Most of these instances were many years ago, but I used to try to put very poor ideas in people’s heads and try to get them to go along with these absurd plans of mine, purely because I had a vision of how the world was. They didn’t agree and of course it never went anywhere, I’m not mad about that because I was actually a moron. But a lot of that went into Wren’s own actions towards characters such as Rebecca, Calypso (@GlitchingEclipse) , and especially Penda, especially during Chapter 1. Wren’s personality, my own old personality, and Wren’s curse are reflective of one another in this way. I’m of course not proud of how I used to be, but it did give me the opportunity to play a really interesting character later down the line so there’s that I guess.
You may have also noticed how obsessive Wren was, especially during the needle arc with Levi. The plan with that was initially to start collecting all the needles. This is another of my own traits Wren reflects - an obsession with something ultimately trivial or even harmful, due to a belief it will protect those you care about. Wren wanted to do good with those needles. She was simply callous in her steps to achieve that and it ultimately led to a catastrophic failure. Not much else to say there.
EAGERNESS TO HURT. Now that’s something I’ve only gotten over in the last year or so, and even then not fully. I used to throw punches at the slightest provocation, scream actually really hateful things at those I didn’t want to speak to, etc. Wren? Wren challenged the Ice Cream Man to a fight over not knowing enough, attacked Levi over wanting a needle back, and, depending on your interpretation, threatened to kill Jane before even knowing Jane was conspiring against the group.
A less negative trait of Wren is the fact that she’s desperate to be under the radar and doesn’t know how. So she tries countless approaches and then gets really angry when none of them work and we’re back to my previous point.
However, Wren is also someone who values her relationships a lot, like me, and that’s the main thing that keeps us both from going too far. Throughout the campaign, Wren was steadily growing closer with other characters, namely Penda and Nix (@Clear ). That’s what ultimately brought her to her senses and made her a bit less of a maniacal piece of shit. Similar story for me. I grew closer with my friends while not changing, then they started calling me out every time I do something stupid, and I’ve been steadily working on changing since.
Wren is, at her core, an extension of myself. I wouldn’t say that, by creating her, I am attempting to separate those traits from myself, because that ultimately leads to repression and is not healthy. What I’d more describe her as is an introspection. As her journey played out, I was able to actually see, from, in a way, an external perspective, what was actually going on and how things can and have improved. And she’s still not perfect of course. Nor am I. But she’s working on it.
And I honestly think, after all that yapping and the pointless monologues in FC3, I can finally truthfully admit that I am too.
Before we get into the Q&A, I want to sincerely thank @Randomness and all the players of FC3 for giving me the chance to play Wren. It means more to me than you realise. It’s a shame we weren’t able to finish the campaign quite on schedule, but I can wait. I’m sure there’s a conclusion for Wren out there somewhere.
BITS OF WREN TRIVIA I WANTED TO SHARE!!!
Wren is a lesbian.
Despite what some players have been trying to suggest, Wren has no active romantic interest in Penda Demos.
I actually considered asking Randomness to kill off Wren near the end of the campaign, but decided against it.
Alright, with that out the way, any and all questions relating to the concept, backstory, story, personality, appearance, what-ifs, or anything else you think of about the character of Wren are now fully welcome! Go wild.
