Something funky is going on since in ao on windows fps seems to be capped at 60 fps (even when set to unlimited in roblox)
On linux the game doesn’t have any significant lag spikes, it’s capped at 60 fps until i go fullscreen and then for some reason it shoots up to 144 (???)
Sober claims to have up to twice the performance of Windows, but they don’t explain how, which makes me think it’s Linux just being a better OS, as usual.
I think Vetex is a pretty good game developer overall. He has been doing this for years, and the fact that he created a lot of what’s in the game up to now is really impressive for a (mostly) solo dev. But with how he skips balancing changes and seemingly neglects quality of life because of how he doesn’t like to do it feels…Well, I can’t call him lazy but those stuff do feel pretty necessary.
That being said, he’s certainly not a perfect guy. He’d sacrificed nearly every social aspect of his life to work on this game (which I can respect to a certain degree, but I’m really concerned with that overall) and it shows with how he interacts with the fanbase. He doesn’t handle criticism well at all, and it feels as though he straight up blocks out some of the people who’s trying to help him (the balance team for one is a great example of this)
His sense of direction with the game also feels…really questionable. Sometimes you get the empires update (which I personally believe was a really good update despite some flaws) and then sometimes you get the annoying dirt and tanning feature, or the miserable hecate essence experience.
vetex is cool but some of the stuff he does for ‘lore reasons’ and ‘immersion’ like dirt accumulation, that rain poisoning stuff in the dark sea (forgot what its called), the reverted class names and his reaction to the community hating it, and hecate essence really annoys me
however, the fact that he’s getting a lot of help now with development (moochezz carrying) and has reverted some of the worse changes gives me a lot of hope for the future of AO
Uh sometimes he doesn’t prioritize fun. Like he prioritizes how the experience should be but occasionally at the cost of fun.
Sometimes some game mechanics feel isolated (like he slapped it onto his game because he likes it, not because it makes the game better)
Not really bad, just an interesting way of making a game I suppose?
(Hecate Essence, insanity as a stat, fire magic not working in water, negative synergies , hunger to get people to cook, are all some odd choices imo.)
Brilliant solo dev when it comes to working on such a bad platform. I don’t think I will ever hate on him as much as some people but he is very resistant to change and new ideas. It took years for him to get a simple dev team.
vetex please stop thinking making mechanics cripplingly unfun is good game design.
it’s not relaxing, I’m literally not engaged enough with the game for the game to relax me.
this game design doesn’t happen often, but it sticks out like a sore thumb when it does.
(essence and fishing are the biggest examples)
i dunno. he’s kind of always worked at around this pace. even when AA switched to a fixed update schedule (either weekly or monthly i dont remember), those updates would be pretty minimal in comparison. i’m not really bothered by it because i have other shit to do anyway.
i think his response to certain portions of the community is completely natural, even if it might not have been the right choice. a lot of you are really fucking annoying.
the game is perfectly enjoyable when i’m not getting jumped.
