Those who are observant of me may or may not have noticed about my disgust for Japanese animated entertainment, whether it’d be video game, TV series, or books. I shall explain why in an incoherent list of shit that most anime lovers will just insult me over after reading.
Reason 1
- Over-dramatic voice acting:
Out of most animes that I’ve watched (mainly Pokemon) and small tidbits of random Discord memes, I’ve noticed that anime characters tend to let out this unsettling grunt whenever they have a sudden change in emotion (it can be described as a brief or sudden “uh”. Allow me explain:
Person 1: “I have a 3 of Cloves, you can’t possibly beat that!”
Person 2: “Well, I have a King of Spades right here!”
Person 1: "Uh"
And it’s not just grunting, I’ve observed them do similar things with their voice whenever they notice things out of the corner of their eye, or nodding their head. People may say that this conveys the mood and tone of the scene but to me, it’s just unnecessary and makes me uncomfortable.
Reason 2
- The seemingly constant fluctuation of fps:
I admit, I may be wrong when I’m addressing it as “frames per second,” but it’s the closest thing I can describe it to.
Imagine for me please, a person walking down a sidewalk. Simple and smooth right? Then imagine that the person takes the first step briskly, then the second step seemingly slowed down. Yeah, it’s little things like that. I mean, compare it to Western cartoons like Animaniacs or Tom and Jerry. Characters in Tom and Jerry walk in a consistent manner, not this slow down-speed up fashion in anime.
Its not just walking either, I’ve observed the same in climbing, jumping, spinning, running, and other bodily movements that take longer than 5 seconds.
You may call me nitpicky for this but it’s a reason why I hate anime and that’s the end of the story.
Reason 3
- The fact that it’s literally fucking everywhere:
Everywhere I go, there’s at least someone or something that I find that references anime.
It doesn’t matter if it’s a cosplaying weeb at an event at the mall or just a shelf of books at the public library, I can’t seem to go anywhere that doesn’t have animated cartoon characters with spiky and glossy hair and massive colorful eyes. Although I’ve managed to put up with this most of the time, I’ve started wondering why Japan has yet to take over the world using their entertainment industry.
It’s so widespread where I’m from (we have an anime club at school filled with hundreds of kids) and I highly doubt it’s different elsewhere, considering that the internet is filled with its content and with people talking about it.
A good is example was my “What’s your favorite national anthem?” thread, where the majority of the replies came in the form of music from anime series. Goddamit when I say national anthems, I mean national anthems, not whatever that Attack on Titan sht is.
I was tempted to add more but I would like to prevent myself from being mauled even more than I’m prepared for.
