Explanation: As it is currently written, the way dark sealed chests work encourages a playstyle of sitting around in the Bronze sea and waiting for players to bring the loot to you. The way this is written reminds me of the godawful mess that was legendary charts.
Very few people who actually found the charts ever got the loot from them because they’d immediately be swarmed by players scrambling to get it for themselves.
It doesn’t help that players leaving the dark sea will probably be doing so with damaged ships and lowered health.
I do not want to see another situation like that where players who put in absolutely no time or effort whatsoever get rewards they did not earn at the expense of players who actually put in that time and effort to get them.

The Dark Sea, to my understanding, is supposed to be a sort of roguelike-ish gamemode for lack of better words where you can go in, find incredible rewards beyond those in the normal game in randomly generated areas, but you need to escape before any of it actually matters.

This is why I believe dark sealed chests should open the second you’re within the sea cluster and out of combat without needing to go to a shipwright.

Lore wise we can just say that they were magically sealed by the intense magic of the dark sea and when its out of that environment the seal just evaporates.

This is not something I think can be accurately captured in the testing environment, but it is incredibly clear that this is how it will play out in the main game, and if it doesn’t, I will be absolutely shocked.

Please don’t make this update inadvertently PvP centered.

fucking THANK YOU. i wanted to say something like this so badly, because you know theres gonna be a billion ice conjurers and warriors with vindicators (fucking yucky) just waiting to split you in two once you get out of the dark sea

and i thought it was just me who hated vindi warriors.

I didn’t think about this, there can be shipwrights in the dark sea around the islands maybe but I feel like that would ruin the experience and feel of the dark sea. Maybe make a neutral island in the start of the dark sea? If anyone picks a fight, NPC’s can swarm them. Idk though, hard thing to come up with an answer to.

Great suggestion tho  :+1:

yea I thought about having dark sea shipwrights too but that’d make no sense and really kill the risk of being in the dark sea.

so instead I opted for the idea of the sealed chests opening as soon as you left the dark seas and ended the expedition while out of combat.

Yes pls
Although attacking ships for their dark sealeds with my clan sounds fun, I would absolutely hate being on the receiving end

basically, you don’t want the Golden Rule to apply to you.

some people are going to be waiting like an hour for some chests then
and with so many places to hand in your sealeds, i highly doubt this will be an issue

id like to see how this plays out on release before doing something like auto opening of chests or whatever

you say that like there’s only going to be one player doing expeditions per server.
there could be 2 or 3 or 4 or more ships going in and out within that hour, even more reason to just not go into the dark seas yourself since if you was coordinated with a group you’d be able to get substantially more loot with substantially less effort.

i’m gonna spend like 3 hours on end in the dark sea before returning.

its not even that hard to get dark sea sealeds. might happen if theres a ship with a fat load of chests but that happens with bronze chests already, and honestly it didnt happen much with those

Why not. I don’t want this game to turn into Rogue Lineage’s “flood house” servers. According to the wiki, a billion allied players would all join one server, with still more allies queued up, effectively completely negating the risk of permadeath for that group of players. I don’t see how Arcane Odyssey clans can’t also do this.

that just reminded me about how my clan is gonna all go in on release, i doubt it would be a problem if everyone goes in together, but for solos it could end up a problem. But to be fair I agree with Misinput about the amount of places with shipwrights.

I mean everything makes it sounds like the dark seas are meant to be this super challenging hellscape where you’re constantly at risk of dying to one of a variety of things.

no matter how many shipwright locations there are, why should you lose all of that to some guy sitting near one of those locations watching for ships exiting the dark seas?

the challenges of the dark sea should end when you leave the dark seas.

haha, so if people doing the dark sea legit have to fend off pve enemies AND pvp enemies, maybe the ninja looters should have to fight “karma clones”, which are NPC-controlled copies of the players they killed for dark sea chests, and they would be spawned when the game detects that someone killed a ship with loads of dark sea chests with not that much time spent in the dark sea themselves.

idk i’m not great with ideas

that would do absolutely nothing to deter players doing it or even offer a compromise to the player that was killed.

Takes a minute to sell a fat heap of chests. See a guy at ravenna? Go to palo

I might be wrong by saying theyre easy to get. Theyre easy, just they can cost a fair bit of galleons if youre intending on being in the darksea for quite some time

At the end of the day, global pvp is a thing. And as i said, i want to gauge how much of an issue this will be on release. I think its fine as it is right now. If there are issues, things can change
