A disappointment

With me finally being able to play full release, its been a complete dissapointment. The exeuction is stifling what could be a very good game. Allanon in particular just made me want to quit the game. Simply put, the amount of mild annoyances and sheer jank as well as questionable or downright idiot game design choices have reached a point where in my opinion, if the game contuines down this path, it has no future.

Issues

Broadly, these issues are:

  • completely idiotic game design which is often reverted within a week of release (i.e: fleets, pvp balancing; pulsar ,etc)

-inadequte testing time and promising more than is able to be done (nimbus wipe, full release wipe, 2024 roadmap, etc)

-unoptimisation and inconsistency (Why are T jumps and more jumps server sided but dashes aren’t…? This just leads to pvp above like 300 ping being completely impossible, memory leaks, unoptimisation, particle spam, destruction)

-awfully designed bosses ( WHY DO BOSSES RANDOMLY RESET HP?? ESPECIALLY ALLANON?? seriously, who designed allanon?? The spams 1023910293 particles every 10 seconds. I’m lagging on a 4060!! Also, who expects a level 50 player to beat elius with the shit that is terrain destruction? )

-features that are just there because Vetex said so (Why is terrain destruction a thing? Why is % based damage a thing? and so on.)

A long, LONG list of issues
  • There’s a bug where, rarely, you can’t steer your ship.

  • Sometimes, your Weapon skills just get voided after unequipping them (Perhaps only for skills that aren’t made yet, even if so, it shouldn’t outright remove them.)

  • The game, for some reason,n doesn’t load islands like it’s keeping your position at a specific point but letting your character move.

    • I ran into this when I fought Hallbjorn, where, re after everything, South of Palo Town was completely unloaded, REALLY bad since I had both a legendary and mythical chart that I unfortunately couldn’t use, as I had to reset.
  • I know it’s fixed, but the fact that full-release had banks take all of your money without giving it back is a crime alone, granted, it’s the bank, they do that already, but you get my point.

  • Flying whales? What the fuck happened? Why are the whales still flying multiple hotfixes after full release?

    • This doesn’t mean I don’t want them to stay; they give me security, the way a god watches over a land, they watch over the ocean.
  • This isn’t a bug, but a thing that needs to be addressed; the performance is god-awful, I shouldn’t be lagging when I have a Ryzen 9 3950x and an RTX 3080 10GB.

    • At this point, I can only suspect it’s because all of the islands are still loaded, because when I was at , I could deadass look down and see multiple islands fully loaded, buildings still at full detail.

Extra

  • I recon many have run into the ‘can’t drink potion bug’, all I’ve seen is that I couldn’t drink a mystery potion when I had recovery, otherwise I could do it just fine.

    • I’m not a smartypants on the logic, but I suspect the ‘allow to drink’ permissioning is messed up

    • And why hasn’t clan building been updated since it came out, it is sooo janky to work with

      And and, WHY has there been more issues w every hotfix since full release?

  • Treasure Charts just flat out don’t work anymore in v1.20.12 servers, Finding the location won’t give a note and common charts won’t disappear (has only been happening to me in older servers so idk if this got patched recently or if charts just break after a while)

  • Bounty NPCs don’t spawn anymore in servers over like 3 hours old

  • Castaways don’t spawn anymore in servers over like 3 hours old

  • Ships seem to be significantly rarer in older servers

  • Often, Drinking a potion in the latest version of the game will just completely bug them and you won’t be able to drink anymore (This has never happened to me if I drink a harming potion before drinking any positive ones, though I haven’t done nearly enough testing to confirm if it’s a consistent workaround)

  • Mortars don’t deal any damage 90% of the time

  • If you try to place a structure on a clan base, but then you get the “Structure is Obstructed” message, the Build Tool acts like the Drachma from the treasury was still spent on it anyway and so every time you fail to place it restricts your spending further (eventually it just starts saying “not enough drachma in treasury”) (evidence)

  • Fleet commanders can delete eachother by appearing on an island where one of yours is already stationed and then the deleted fleet commander will never respawn for the rest of your time in the server

  • “Minimize Risk” setting on fleets has a tendency to burn significantly more money on food & supplies than doing it by hand, without actually keeping the bars full

  • Sunk NPC Ships have a tendency to take an insane amount of time to spawn their chests in

  • NPC Ships STILL have a tendency to just not drop sealed chests (ESPECIALLY Dark Sea ships)

  • Rivals met after Full Release seem to just never spawn, me and my friend both met one and have literally never seen it spawn after we met them (Rivals from before full release work fine)

  • Bounty Board Minibosses that notice someone NEVER naturally de-aggro and warp back to their spawn the way normal criminal NPCs do, if they spot someone who doesn’t engage they could just get lost in the middle of the ocean permanently

  • Joining into a server where you spawn on your boat still has a tendency to spawn you in the skybox

  • The system that used to warp you back up if you got clipped into a boat doesn’t work anymore so you when it does happen you have to wait ~10 minutes for the ship to despawn (on your own ship you can at least hold down a skill and start it moving to clip back out )

  • Assassinating an animal softlocks you

  • If you grab a sealed chest while your character is reloading (most likely to equip/remove the ravenna disguise) then you’ll get softlocked (this was adressed by making it not happen while holding a chest, but it still happens if you pick it up during the character reload )

  • Bounty Boards will sometimes say the NPC is on a specific island when they’re actually in the ocean and vice versa

  • Sparkles from rare gear in your inventory get stuck on your screen if you close it too fast

  • The Dark Sea rifts still keep you out (not sure if this is intentional but they said in a patchnote it’s supposed to disappear when you go i n)

  • Sensing sometimes takes a really, REALLY long time to restore your screen brightness when turning it off in the Dark Sea, like upwards of 15-30 seconds

  • Grab skills still just don’t register like half the time (at least it saves me from allan o n)

  • NPCs with grab skills are incredibly desynced

    • They can grab you from FAR away from where they are on your screen
    • They can grab you out of your own grab skills
    • They can supercharge a grab skill and grab you with it before the supercharge sequence even finishes
  • If you take an item out of a Reagent pot, you can’t insert a fresh one in. You have to Delete and re-place it to do so.

  • White Eyes has still genuinely never worked properly since the game’s Early Access release

    • his AI STILL has a tendency to just give up on life and sit motionless in the water
    • When there’s multiple people nearby (like on the same ship) usually only one person can see him while everyone else just thinks you’re hallucinating
  • Krakens sometimes spawn floating in the air (although they’re remarkably stable considering this game’s history with sea monsters)

  • If your friend from a party is holding a treasure chart, you silently become unable to dig it up, so if you’re digging while they read you the instructions you could cluelessly dig right past it

  • The Forest of Masts has an insane laggy aura around it

  • If one of your friends gets swept off the boat by a wave, but they get saved by the railing, the wave will just keep pulling on them until it eventually lets go, or, more likely, your friend gets warped way over to whereever the wave is

  • Fishing rods, if you cast it near the point where it would stop working due to range, have a tendency to stay out visually on your screen but just be silently unable to catch anything

  • Bosses in multiplayer have a tendency to warp around like crazy for some strange reason (it’s to the point where my first time playing through the story alone I was actually impressed at how lord elius uses the pillars in the fight, since in multiplayer he’s too unstable for it to look c o ol)

  • Often, when taking the wheel, you just can’t do anything and need to re-do it

  • Pirates spawned by mythical chart (that didn’t spawn on a boat) will NEVER despawn, they’ll sit there forever unless someone kills them

  • The Nimbus Sea map is stretched Horizontally, meaning:

    • You don’t actually move in the direction your map cursor is pointed, it drifts horizontally
    • If you navigate with the compass, your directions will be off
    • Explorer’s intuition is likely off as well since it remains a perfect sphere while the map is stretched
  • When I get on the wheel while near a dark sea island my game starts lagging like crazy

  • Despite unlocking the limit of 4 status effects at once from a specific brewing profession passive, it’s still not possible to drink potions when you have 2 effects (not sure if this is a bug or not) FIXED

  • Leaving the wheel during the Active Duration of a deckhand ability causes the bar to begin filling again in the client UI even though it’s still in active duration and not recharging, resulting in quite a long period of time with Shipbuilder deckhands where the bar is full and you can’t actually use it (which gets annoying when trying to get the crew to use supplies to repair during the abi l ity )

  • If you don’t grab the wall after deploying the grappling hook, you get stuck facing in one direction until the next time you deploy a grappling hook

  • Forts often don’t show their HP bar (especially when you’re sitting back with long range)

  • Eastern Reaches zone heavily overlaps with Monos Island and makes it hard to mouse over

  • Party indicators are often horribly inaccurate until you actually get close enough to update them

  • You can often see the random crews of player ships floating over random spots in the ocean

  • Ships have these random invisible parts everywhere that skills explode on which makes combat on ships super janky

  • Ships often immediately warp away upon taking damage

  • Ship crews often take a while to load in (or never do) and then there’s no one to attack to get the chests to spawn

  • Trying to climb out of the water can be really janky, especially in the Dark Sea

  • Deckhand Gifting:

    • The menu doesn’t update when giving them an item, leaving a ghost item you can’t donate anymore
    • Stacked items require you to close and re-open the gifting menu to give them more than one
  • Innacurate Explorer’s intuition islands:

    • Nimbus Wilds’ circle is horribly offcenter (possibly due to nimbus sea map st r etc h)
    • Frostmill’s intuition circle doesn’t include the smaller disconnected icebergs (the ones that have been there since before full release) even though they are valid chart locations
  • If a bounty board just says “Sailing the Bronze sea,” good luck

  • 4/5 vents in the Vents of Aeolus will just send you straight into the floor of ivoris and likely just have you fall back down. The only functional one is the most distant and isolated one

  • Enemy tower floors are insanely fragile (to the point i’ve resorted to just clearing them with M1s) (might be fixed?)

  • Leviathan can get swept off the arena by waves

  • Dismissing a Command ship from your Fleet when there’s no open slot for a deckhand on your brig will straight up banish that deckhand to the abyss where he can never return from

  • Deckhands that you asked to follow you have a really annoying tendency to just get stuck on everything possible and slow you down, to the point it’s usually easier to either just do whatever they can yourself or not use their unique services at all

  • The Supply gain from cutting trees is genuinely abysmal, it takes maybe ~15 minutes to fill up the supplies on a Brig. It’s faster to just never use the system and hope you find ships at sea to sink

  • Deckhands can’t cut a lot of Dark Sea tree variants

  • Marking Visuals disappear when terrain takes any amount of damage at all and you can’t mark broken terrain

  • searching “Arcmancer” in your inventory doesn’t work because it’s been changed to “firemancer” or something like that

  • You cannot just search “Fish” and have all the fish appear in the new cooking UI like you could with the old, OLD inventory system, which actually makes the new UI more annoying for making fish dinners.

  • Build Tools always silently reset to “Your Drachma” when re-equipping the tool, and if you aren’t constantly watching out for it it’s incredibly easy to end up losing tens of thousands of Drachma

  • Since there’s no “Wait for your party” prompt in this game, when you’re playing the story with friends you’re incentivized to skip the dialogue or else you’ll miss out on encounters or end up joining boss fights super late

  • If someone else kills the enemies from a story encounter (ex: windrow wolves ambush, kill guards in fort talos, etc.) before you deal any damage to them, you don’t get credit (even if they’re in your party) and you need to wait until they respawn before you can continue (so an ambush sequence plays out less like fighting for your life and more trying to make sure everyone you’re playing with actually dealt at least a tiny bit of damage to EVERY ENEMY or else they end up like a full minute behind in terms of dialogue, hence another reason why my friends just skipped a lo t of it)

  • Sealed Chests don’t appear to be worth carrying anymore, on a ton of islands I’ll just see random abandoned sealed chests from charters because they just won’t bother to do it

  • The Bounty Hunting profession progresses INSANELY slow for some reason (and it’s not just because criminal NPCs don’t spawn anymore)

  • Relics seem to be insanely rare drops for some reason (at least based on what oracles have said here)

  • Navigating the Marketplace for any item that’s part of a broad category (such as Reagents, or Enchantment scrolls) is absolute agony scrolling through tons of pages of stuff you’re not looking for either starting from the top or bottom while getting rate limited on pages. Having some ability to search or filter would do WONDERS for the system

  • It is still impossible to get a ship out of the very docks that NPC ships are parked at in islands

  • Fodder NPCs that spam tiger rush can end up being really annoying and waste your time by trapping you in a cutscene for a 0 damage attack

  • Sliding time when grabbing a wall is jarringly long, it’s generally quicker to just un-grab and re-grab than to wait it out

  • Blocking while dashing with shift dash toggles sensing

  • Dexterity decreases the travelling time of Fighting Style attacks such as Crash without increasing the speed, so it effectively reduces range on those attacks

  • Allanon’s Arena features a very large brick with a 1 stud tall, flat, indestructible core, meaning as the arena gets takes damage it’s possible to make a bad dash and get buried deep into the ground under an indestructible cieling

Why is magic visuals so laggy?
Why is boss design still the same?
Why is ship spawns so low now?
Allaon is not a fun boss fight at all

The eastern reaches intuition also heavily overlaps with monos island in terms of detecting your mouse (I need to keep moving my mouse downward and back up to even look at what it says)

also miniboss enemies just do not respawn at their chosen island location if someone just ran past or they were hit without being killed (if someone aggroes them and sailed off, they could be in the sea but not even be in a boat)

Magic Visuals are laggy due to the excessive amounts of ParticleEmitters used; Roblox dislikes it majorly when a bunch are compacted into a small spot.

Boss design being the same is likely just using what already worked; they have been working more on other features than making the bosses innovative.

Ship spawning… or rather spawning in general is busted, there are so few animals, there are so few castaways, I see one or two pirate ships when I sail halfway across the Bronze Sea.

Allanon’s first phase is perfectly fine, fair fight… the second phase is not, I do not want an attack that covers half the arena and deals +300 damage per tick… it doesn’t make sense when every other boss is fairly done, and then the difficulty jump hits like a truck for no reason.

Even something as basic as blocking is janky, as I’ve run into countless situations in which I can’t block at all and there’s no clear reason why, or the blocking sticks to where it’s held down until I press the key. That’s a severe issue when blocking is integral to both combat and saving yourself from fall damage. Also for some reasons my cauldrons break literally all consumables on use, or at least luck cauldrons do.

  • Warlords cannot swing a colossal with anything in their off-hand, because we LOVE pointless aesthetic additions that break your entire experience At Random due to Arcane and whatever obnoxious way they handle mouse events

  • Throwing Harpoons do not work. I’m enjoying Berserker ever since I swapped over to it and it Pains me that I cannot Formally embark on hunting sea life without punching it.

  • Cannonfists’ new Crash breaks you entirely if you swap during the cast. This is preventable, but pesky if you’re mindlessly cycling.

  • Enemy AI can still end up duplicating in a way and they’ll start throwing out double casts/dodges when they should only be utilizing one. Even King C. can do it

  • not to mention that some crew commands (specifically all the cargo commands except “unload the ship”, as well as “bring the ship”) just don’t work at all
    and also sometimes a crewmate tries to gather supplies and forgets how to climb while their other cocrewmate scales a wall 3x higher

the flinging across the sea bug, the bronze sea tax, the bosses that double their attack speed bug, the unable to climb out of water bug, the invisible pothole bug, the invisible/uncollidable object falling damage bug, the assassination bug, the unloading a ship with cargo from the same port bug, the deckhands not jumping to harvestables bug, the deckhands not talking bug, the mortars not hitting half the time bug, the npcs birds and other air anchored objects catching the ship and doing crash damage bug, the sense not turning off properly bug, the sealed chests not surfacing properly bug, the gear sets not saving/loading properly bug, the m1 button staying pressed bug, the ships that teleport bug, the ships that give no loot bug, the bosses that walks off to the side and then regens full health bug, the broken avatar during interrupted animations bug, the casting/skills/abilities/actions not registering in a reasonable amount of time bug

Taking command of your ship (regardless of tier), opening your inventory and closing it overlays the backpack on top of the lowered heads-up display.

on mage and MAYBE oracle, hes tolerable
on any magic/spirit hybrid, half of your build is null
on anything else you’re better off picking a god and praying

fighting him feels like i’m going to die at any moment without any of my input mattering genuinely WHO THOUGHT IT WAS A GOOD IDEA TO GIVE HIM A 2K DAMAGE GRAB??? WELCOME BACK ARCANE REBORN BALANCING

i’d genuinely prefer to fight undead prometheus rather than allanon, at least with prometheus you have a barrier that counters some of his moves

allanon gets even worse when his siren flying AI kicks in, while farming for his drops he did his massive self aoe attack that deals like 5k damage right after flying next to me

tldr; allanon deserves to go to hell, find a new girlfriend, marry her, then have her repent her soul and go up to heaven and stay alone forever in HELL

All this could be solved if there was more rewarding close range combat. I had the idea of partial poise breaks. Basically, any built up poise you get is automatically converted to a break if you hit an enemy with a fighting style skill while they’re casting a spell, which also interrupts it if there’s enough poise. This could properly punish the bosses since they have pretty long windup.

I remember seeing that suggestion, it really does seem like AO was built around the idea that everyone’s playing mage, with the other builds just having to do whatever they can to get by

I do think the update could have done with a small delay, even if it meant releasing in january which i know would annoy people so he couldnt really win regardless

One day to fix all the bugs that transferring the TU version to in game was not enough. I would like to say that imo the update is certainly not a disappointment, the content that was added is very good, but the bugs do let it down

If i had tester this would all be under control…

Yeah, vetex doesn’t know how to actually make a game, let alone write a story in video game form

There’s so many issues and vetex decided to add fucking DoT damage to tornados in dark sea at spawn range, it’s actually baffling that this man has lasted so far without going homeless and dying on the streets with this many blunders.

simply with tons of cope. If we had to treat AO like it’s a steam game, it would have mixed reviews AT BEST even if it’s free. That is not a game, it’s just a meaningless program pretending to be a game.

why do you play the game then, it cant be that bad if you continue to come back to it

because frankly, standards have gotten so bad that AO is actually considered acceptable these days. Ok, i lied. vetex doesn’t know how to do good game design.

Why do you think i have almost no respect for roblox game devs? it’s not just who they are ultimately catering to. It’s that skills from “roblox game devving” cannot transfer well into making actual games. Some stuff that passes in roblox will get you death threats on steam.
