A Fighting Style from the Sky

I feel like having a few more fighting styles would be good for AO, so I am suggesting one based on the Sky.
I am tentatively calling it “Sky Palm”, but if a better name comes up, I wouldn’t mind changing it.

Basics of the Style

This style is meant to be based on palm strikes.
The M1 combo would probably be rather simple, because of that, but I wouldn’t know.
This style should, by default, deal somewhat below average damage, but have slightly bigger AoEs for its’ techniques.

The Gimmick, part 1

The gimmick of this style, as I imagine it, is that as someone uses it, clouds, or mist start building up around them, and trailing them.
This buildup should further increase the AoE of attacks used, and might cause some negative effects if the user is attacked with lightning, or cold-based attacks.
It would also inflict Wetness once the buildup has reached a certain point.
That, and the next part, are why cloud buildup should probably be displayed.

The Gimmick, part 2

The next part comes into play when someone using this style charges their energy manually, possibly only when it is full, prior to a first awakening?
When that happens, the clouds around the user are compressed, and darken into stormclouds.
For either a limited amount of time, or a limited number of attacks, cloud buildup is disabled, attack AoEs are reduced to what they are at with no clouds at all, and attacks include lightning effects, dealing significant damage.
Either the duration, or the actual effect of this, would be determined based on cloud buildup on activation.

Learning the Style

The location where this style would be learned, if it is learned from a teacher NPC, would, of course, be in the sky. I don’t know if it should be on an existing named sky island, one of the smaller, unnamed ones, or a new one.
If an NPC teacher is used, they should probably be located close to a cloud part of the island, maybe even directly on a cloud part?
I’m not sure what their quest should be, but I suppose it could be related to using a skyship, and either travelling a large distance with one, or using up a lot of Energy with one.
That might just be tedious, though.

Reasons in favor of adding
  • I haven’t seen a fighting style like this one suggested before
  • It adds to the Sky, which has very little content at the moment, as far as I know
  • There aren’t many fighting styles currently existing
Reasons against adding
  • Might be difficult to implement
  • Could be difficult to balance appropriately
  • It’s possible that the similarities to a planned style (both being associated with electricity to a degree) are too much

Please, share your thoughts on this.

I hope that this suggestion is interesting, and that I haven’t rambled too much.
(And that I am not being rude by posting a second suggestion before the topic of my first one closes)

We definitely need more fighting styles and sky content. This would probably show up in the Nimbus sea or something like that later on if it does get added though.

Fairly unique and interesting idea.

The cloud mechanic seems similar to thermo fist, but the ability to compress the clouds makes it more interactive and a lot better. The idea is cool, but it might need some changes to be more unique. I think it’s overall pretty cool though, reminds me of the Kurokumo clan in Library of Ruina with their cloud katanas and stuff.

I am aware of the similarities to Thermo Fist, and, honestly, they are partially intentional.
Thermo fist, with its’ overheating, and thus a weakness to heat-based attacks, has a nice contrast to a fighting style that is more likely to have problems with the rest of the fire-ice-lightning triangle.
I did consider having cloud buildup happen based on movement, instead of attacking, but that would either require a lot of running, or end up being far too easy to generate.
The buildup could also just be removed entirely, but that would take away the effort needed to use the stormcloud gimmick.
And tying it to a timer felt similarly boring, in my mind.
Funnily enough, I did not recall that part of LoR, though, to be fair, I didn’t exactly finish that game, or play it recently.

A sky based fighting style is certainly possible second sea given we’re going to the NIMBUS sea next but this idea as a whole feels sorta like a lost deal. Combining multiple elemental effects and such. So this idea is good but I feel we’d have to wait quite a while down the line to see something that act like this.

Yeah, with more than one element being involved, it’d probably have to be either a lost style, or one with higher requirements to be unlocked.
Doesn’t mean that I wouldn’t like to see it in the game at some point in the nebulous and unknowable future xD

The cloud similarities only really extend to the names of attacks and visual design (I was reminded of them in Limbus Company). The cloud theming isn’t really noticable. Also you invite the Kurokumo in Urban Plague which is early-mid game.

Also, I think a fun way to distance this fighting style from thermo fist would be to let you throw clouds and them you would have to attack or touch them, similar to how you throw coins in ULTRAKILL and them shoot them. You’d have you balance this to prevent running though, maybe you have to toss clouds through your opponent and then touch or attack them to gain cloud meter. This would require it’s own spell though, which means this will probably be a lost fighting style.

Storm Cloud Fist

Would inflict paralysis and procs soaked on enemies(75% charge)

Slightly blinds enemies upon attack

Attacks are slow(iron leg slow), but leaves behind storm clouds that can “smite” the enemy and stun them some more.

0.85x dmg at max?

AOE slightly less than Iron Leg

idk that’s my idea for a sky fs

if I understand this right: A fighting style that builds up AOE but then can sacrifice that AOE built up for a burst of DPS
(I wanna mix this with wind sooo bad)

poofy poof punchie powers

Make it so u slap sky skates on ur hands and just go crazy

Not a bad idea. I feel like it’s a bit complicated with the wet effects and lightning effects, but perhaps have visual lightning only? And maybe try the name “Cloud Combat”?

@ThatOneGuy

I like the idea of a fighting style being taught on a sky island, but also feel preference to the already planned fighting styles. Maybe something like karate? But the fighting style is well thought out, and something like this will prob be coming. As a lost fighting style maybe?
