A long list of dark sea ideas

Spent a bit of time with patreon/general/level-25 chat making a list of ideas or content that could be added to the dark sea. It’s about 90 lines long and covers every area I could think of that wasn’t dark sky or abyssal related. I’ve been trying to avoid anything AA lore related as It seems pretty tough to determine what can and cant move inbetween games lore wise so I thought it was best to just ignore that for the meanwhile. Feel free to give feedback or add your own ideas to it.

Also no this isnt a suggestion post this is just discussion

- Events:
Mouth/Jaws appearing under stationary ships - Maybe teeth breaking the water slightly
More background sounds to keep you on edge roars/screams/ect
Objects in the fog - Large shark fins, Hands, Claws, Eyes, Eyeballs, Teeth, Faces, Tentacles
Silhouettes flying overhead with sounds - Doesnt have to be anything distinguishable just meant to be unsettling
A large fog cloud that follows your ship. The crew should comment on it making them uneasy.
A large shaking eyeball appearing in the sky and looking down on the player briefly. It should then close and disappear

- More sea monsters:
Kraken (Obviously)
Large eels
Large crabs/lobsters maybe a hybrid
Umibozu
Ningen
Hydra
Aspidochelone (Fake islands)
Cirein-croin (Disguises itself as a school of smaller glittering fish becoming a large monster when ready to strike)
Just a huge whale
Extremely large lizard inspired creatures
Swarms of smaller but dangerous fish not sure what they’d look like but they could circle ships waiting for players to fall off
Large Nautilus should be found floating underwater perhaps in groups dont have to be aggressive just make them imposing
Mermaids that spawn in small groups and transform when the player hits the water

- Land based monsters:
Roaming Golems/Inactive golems that activate when you get close
Statues that crumble into enemies made of stone when you get close
Caves with demons/ghosts inside
Atlanteans mutated to crawl like spiders maybe they can go up walls or have a cave full of webs
Angler fish atlanteans should be able to hypnotise players at extremely high levels maybe have players locked walking towards them (Consider making players immune/Stopping atlantean attacks while this happens it’s scary not frustrating
Large birds
Atlanteans mutated into birds
Atlanteans mutated into Wolves/Dogs
Atlanteans mutated into SNAILS!!!
Atlanteans mutated in a way that prevents them moving/turns them into piles of flesh not an enemy/npc just meant to be unsettling
Enemies that can mimic objects and transform back to their actual forms when a player is nearby. They should move slightly every now and then as an indication something is wrong with them.
Something that works like a weeping angel. Not sure if they should damage the player they should just be unsettling. If movement is too complex they can just be stationary at structures instead
Enemies that drop from trees or try to pick up the player if they walk underneath them. They shouldnt be common and not sure if they should do any signficant amount of damage
Individual mutated limbs that very slowly move towards the player and do minimal or no damage, Legs can move like worms, Arms can move like y’know arms, Hands are probably too simple to animate anything, Heads can roll
A small area of heavy fog that roams islands and tries to engulf the player if the player is touching it. Shouldnt do damage just limit visibility and disappear if the player moves too fast/dashes/high jumps
Bats
Skeletons
Some sort of creature that can puppet skeletons or corpses it attaches to
Consider adjusting current atlanteans to sometimes represent empires long dead/empires old armour sets to represent how long some people have been out here
Hostile ghost npcs. They should scream and point at the player for a period of time before engaging them if the player doesnt move out of range. Can be strong or weak not really sure what works best

- Island ideas:
A flat island with heavy fog. This is where the weeping angel type enemies could spawn after the player spends a minute or two there
An island surrounded by a large magic circle could be protected from rain/waves while the player is there. Alternatively could make enemies on the island much more dangerous while increasing chests
Islands that require the player to dive to reach their chests. Could have a hole in the center for example that loops into the interior full of enemies/chests (Maybe spiders)
Islands that represent various long dead empires or old stages of existing empires
Sky islands that have fallen into the dark sea only held up by a corner or side. These islands could be at an angle with a cloud on the part thats rising up out of the water
Islands made entirely of bone
Islands made entirely of Flesh
Islands propped up by bones or large skulls
An island with a deer statue on it (Y’know)

- Structure ideas:
Broken/Unlocked large chains obviously used to hold something dangerous on the island
Small huts with ruined farms beside them. Might be best on small islands or mixed in with other civilisation type structures
Large Skeletons
A single massive tree with some sort of significance maybe inscriptions around the base or skeletons littered tangled in its roots with blood
Grave markers/Headstones
A single wooden toilet
Various skeletons affected by magic energy. Skeletons made of solid magics or bodies affected by the non solid magics (Stuck on fire/Half frozen/Drenched in shadow/light)
Broken lighthouses
Functional but flickering lighthouses could have mutated lighthouse keepers inside
Might be interesting to have pristine buildings with unsettling atmospheres inside. Could deteriorate if players look away for long enough.
Massive ships that have somehow washed up on very high areas on some islands
A pile of bodies
Broken walls with impacts or scratch marks

- Megastructure ideas:
A long abandoned prison thinking sort of circular with a tower in the center maybe seperated by the sea
A large leisure ship with npcs on board. They should be unaware of their situation and converse with the player as if nothing was wrong. (So original I know)
A large tower littered with information on a powerful mage. Maybe a story about the dark sea surrounding his tower and him slowly succumbing to the insanity
A large central sky island linked with massive arcanium chains to smaller islands. the chains should have magic flowing along them keeping them afloat (Cloud magic maybe)
An extremely large skull or corpse yet to rot. Players should be able to briefly explore inside but be careful of catching the infection status from rotten areas
Two large ghost warships engaged in a never ending battle. The player could board either and speak to the crew. Maybe only some of the crew should be aware they’re already dead.
a large colosseum filled with ghosts spectating. Maybe time should be frozen at the point where someones just won in battle. Could play cheering effects and such
A large asteroid. Not sure what purpose it’d have could house a monster of some sort.

General Ideas:

  • Crew and quartermasters should progressively become more insane depending on total time spent in one trip. They should start uneasy and slowly devolve into madness insisting the player turn back or losing hope they’ll ever return
eventually they could fall to the floor or grasp the railings or other fitting animations like holding their head or clawing at themselves. None of this should damage them or ruin the players control of the ship it should be looks only
how fast their insanity progresses could be based on the current range so they dont go too insane in lower ranges

  • Water should shift colours in deeper insanity ranges without warding

  • Dead sailors could be found floating in some areas

  • Objects in the distance underwater (Pretty much the same as the fog idea just keep the underwater appropriate ones)

Very cool!
I am so excited for none of these to be added!

Wow that was pretty cool

should be called something more greek imo because theres no way that people in the war seas (besides the thorne dynasty) would call something a japanese name if they randomly encountered it with no foreknowledge
maybe “Thalassanthropos”, a combination of the greek word man (anthropos) and sea (thalassas)?

I made this idea list on other possible dark sea things a few days ago, not nearly as long as yours but if you see anything cool you wanna add :man_shrugging:

some kind of spider creature that lures players into a cave would actually be sick, especially if it drops some kind of web bow or spider dagger or something, maybe some cool armor too or a accessory that gives you a helmet with eight eyes

Maybe you can give them warding potions to lessen their effects, and I believe the crew should have some drawbacks so that sailing into higher levels of the darks seas would be even more difficult. Future ships should add a virtuous enchantment to the hull or ship-related relics to provide buffs in dark seas.

I wish there is more ship crew and quartermasters, man…

Try to suggest more ship crews
