A retrospective of One piece, 500 episodes in

So I recently reached 500 episodes of one piece  and I thought id do a bit of a retrospective on the Pros and cons of One piece and my favourite straw hat crew members.
Spoiler warning btw for anything that happened below episode 500.Also this is all my opinion so feel free to agree and disagree. And with all that lets get started.

Pros

The characters are amazing, you got the straw hats of course with really deep backstorys and fun personality’s,but you also have the other pirates in the show and other side characters with some having really great moments.

The story is interesting too, seeing the world react to what the straw hats do, also having white beard die and having a pirate outburst is really interesting and makes the world seem more real.

The music is great too especially the ops.Opening 5 is my favourite btw.

And the show has tons of variety too,one island has a warlord stealing shadows and is making an army of zombies.Another can have giant trees with bubbles floating around them. Theres a marine admiral who rides a bike across the sea and takes naps but can literally freeze you solid in an instant.

Cons

The pacing is absolutely awful, theres times where a fight can drag out for so long,a character that normally is smart does something stupid and some moments are just unnecessary to begin with and have nothing to do with the plot.I find myself skipping lots of filler because of how much there is.Like for example in Enies lobby Luffy and his friends jump down in order to go in a building and save robin. But the show just decides to spend 3 episodes doing flashbacks of when Luffy met his crew mates and the events leading up to them.Like i dont mind flashbacks but 3 episodes of flashbacks when the story is getting really important is a bit much.

Its also pretty tricky to have a favourite character in One piece because one character could have an amazing moment but then next arc they are dumb as dirt and do something dumb when you know that they can easily avoid doing that. Its hard to name examples off the top of my head but if you watch the show i think you could kind of understand where im coming from.

Now with the pros and cons out of the way lets just go over some of my favourite straw hat crew members.

Ussop:Ussop is probably my favourite straw hat crew member.Sure most of the time hes a coward and runs from most fights but I think he could be one of the strongest straw hats if he just has more confidence in his ability’s.

Also hes one of the most real characters in the show like in Water 7 he was tasked with carrying 2 million dollar with him however he gets beaten up and loses the money. When Nami found him lying on the ground instead of being concerned for his own health he was sad that he was too weak to protect the money and feels like he cant ever show his face to his friends for what he did.Its a really powerful moment in the show and Ussop also does lots of other things in Water 7 arc but if I had to talk about them then this would be a much larger review lol.

Zoro:I love Zoro,he was the first crew mate that Luffy recruited and ever since then hes felt like such a valued member of the crew.Hes a swordsman that uses 3 swords which is insanely cool and his dream to become the worlds greatest swordsman is almost as big as Luffys dream too.Plus the running gag that Zoro always gets lost is really funny to me.

Robin:I like Robin, her backstory is the most tragic and her entire life is a really sad one up until she met the straw hats.Robin also feels like the mom of the crew, making sure nobody does anything super dumb but still taking part in Luffys shenanigans time to time.

And thats the review! To sum it up One piece is a great show and I look forward to reaching episode 1000 and getting fully caught up with the show. Also watching one piece has weirdly been giving me hype for AO because you can build your own crew, bounty hunt, sail your own ship etc. Theres just lots of similarities with One piece and AO that I can’t help but notice and make me even more hyped for the game :).

Thanks for reading my review! :pirate_flag:

One Piece is my favorite show of all time, and there are so many reasons why, but I don’t really feel like listing all the reasons it is right now. I do understand your feelings towards the pacing, as I feel like the story can drag out more than it needs to. I guess one major component as to why that’s the case is due to it being an all-year round anime, but that’s something that I don’t personally mind as I don’t see it becoming seasonal. There’s many more awesome moments to come, especially this year in the anime, since I know what’s to be animated because I read the manga.
