Been awhile since I’ve made people hate me. Lets-a go!
AR is a janky-ass game. It is both fun to play yet excruciatingly hard to enjoy with it’s mechanics and odd AI combat.
1.) The combat.
Ugggghhhhhh. This game’s combat is DUMB. NPCs either run straight at you like their spouse just left them and they have nothing left to live for, or they jump around all over the place like they’re sonic on crack, speed, and pixie sticks. Some of them can predict your every move with little to no chance of dodging, while others don’t seem to realize that you have to HIT your opponent to deal damage to them.
I’ll elaborate on the AI in a later section, for now, let’s talk about PvP.
Eh, it’s alright. No really. I know that AR’s balancing is fucking shit, everyone knows that. Sure, legendary weapons make the game stupidly unfair for anyone who DOESN’T put 10 hours a day into the game. But in all honesty, I can look past that. If you play with T rules, it’s a test of skill and experience (and also what magics you picked, but we don’t have to go into that right now). The toxicity is unwarranted and dickish, but it doesn’t come up nearly as much as it used to for me.
2.) Fighting styles
The absolute fucking-
Okay, if you add a whole new method of fighting in your FIGHTING GAME, wouldn’t you at least TRY to make it work? Well AR didn’t. I didn’t get far enough in AA to really experience the entire game, so correct me if I’m wrong, but weren’t at least three of the fighting styles somewhat useful in that game? In AR you have two. You can either: A) have excellent mobility with boxing, or B) Break the game with radius. Only one of those options is fun, guess which one it is.
3.) Magic
Magic is the only viable option for combat (aside from radius). Most useful non-magic weapons got nerfed into oblivion because they were overpowered, and I already told you about fighting styles. Magic is also unbalanced, you have really good magics like light and lightning that have moves that get from point A to point B instantly, and you have shitty magics like earth that are almost never useful because of their atrocious speed.
4.) Boats
Boats are fine. I have nothing against them.
5.) Bosses
This is where we expand upon the AI. Ramses II will be the first-
WHAT THE FUCK GUYS!?
You had a chance to make your game better than AA by making things more balanced and fair to the player, yet you STILL FUCKED THIS UP!? GOD. Ramses II could’ve been reworked. He could’ve been easier to get to at the very least, but you STILL think that it’s fair to have to run past 30 fucking warriors that inflict big dmg and bleed for that level. Then, when you reach the damned thing. It flings you off and makes you start all over.
The rest of the bosses aren’t any better. Frankly, it’s a miracle that they realized Devil Dog was too overpowered.
Theos and Angel both fly around the stage at the speed of light and spam DOT blasts that have a large AOE. Rupin is that, but without the crazy speed, and with an opening to attack if you’re smart. Even so, he has WAY too much health. All of the bosses do. They also do way to much fucking damage. Hell, The FIRST FUCKING ENEMY OF THE GAME CAN KILL YOU IN 3 HITS WHEN YOU FIRST SPAWN IN.
Not to mention the numerous other oversights of the game. One time, I started a new game and Trigno was circling newground isle and firing magma dragons at it. Did they put ANY thought into this game?! Why are ANY legendary ships allowed to spawn in the first sea?!
My opinions on Prometheus have been expressed many times, and I will not waste my breath on it any longer.
My total rating of AR is 3/10. I want to like this game. I really do, but I just can’t. The terrible balancing and horrible oversights related to it are staggering to me. The sense of adventure and wonder in the wide open seas is ruined by the horrible gameplay of getting your ass kicked by overpowered boss #349.
