A Truly Puzzling Situation

So I was on my AS negative rep file today, working on the Halloween event. I was heading to Palo because I remembered there was an NPC execution scheduled soon, so I stopped by there to loot some private storages in the meantime while I was waiting. I had initially planned to head to the stepstones after freeing the NPC, so I could go turn in Gourdon’s pumpkin collection quest. Now, after a couple minutes, the execution started, and I killed the four vice captains stationed there as usual.

Once they had all died, I waited for the NPC to spawn in so I could free her, but a few moment later a magma mage suddenly starts attacking me. He eventually killed me, and sadly the NPC lost her life. Now, this might just seem to be another typical rking incident, but there’s a few details I wanted to point out that makes this far more puzzling than what it seems.

Firstly, when I joined the server, I saw the very same NPC getting executed, but the execution was stopped. The person who stopped it was the very same player who attacked me while I was trying to save her the second time.

Secondly, this player was a positive rep player. Which makes it strange that they’d free the NPC the first time. It also rules out the chances of this guy killing me for rep, as I only had about 30k, and stopping an execution as a positive player only has two reasons: lowering your rep or trying to get a rival. Since they did not stop the execution the second time, it’s more likely to be the first.

Thirdly, this player didn’t really have PvP stats (aka, dangerous people to avoid): 142k rep, 319 hours, and 45 player kills. I saw their boat when I was arriving at the island, but I didn’t think much of it, as there were three people from their clan in my server, and the other two also had similar stats in terms of likelihood of being PvPers. One of these three people I had sighted at Whispering earlier as I was passing near it, where the bounty was before getting sentenced to execution, and that player presumably was the one who killed the NPC initially.

Fourthly, this player had a good few minutes to attack me after I docked at Palo, yet didn’t even show up until I was waiting for the bounty to load in. I have spells in chat on, and I both didn’t see any spells nor see them around.

When prompted on why they killed me, they didn’t respond, and soon left the server. I have literally zero idea why they killed me, as the usual causes (rep, infamy, looting, or being an idiot) are all out the window here. My friend speculates he just had a grudge against the NPC or just dislikes NPCs in general, and got mad that I was trying to stop the execution, but that sounds a little unlikely. Any thoughts from the forums?

Rest in peace, Day

Truly A Dramatic Odyssey

he probably just wanted the NPC to suffer (like get jailed over and over again) or something then when he got bored of playing around with it, he wanted it executed

If you’re the type to play with the NPCs like pulling the legs off of bugs, then you probably would randomly kill somebody at an execution.

He probably just chose violence that day idk

The way I see it, this player hasn’t done anything strange or out of the ordinary. In games like this, players attacking other players for no reason at all- even if it may seem uncharacteristic, isn’t uncommon. After all, it’s a game, and people play games to destress- whether it’s at the expense of others or not.

But if you’re looking for reason, here are some thoughts.

  1. This player may have wanted to test a new build/spell. You, being the closest person nearby that said player could test it out on, became a prime target.
  2. This player may have mistaken you for an NPC. I’m assuming you atleast fought back or tried to run away, so maybe this player figured you weren’t an NPC but thought they may as well finish what they’ve started.
  3. This player might have simply wanted to prevent you from stopping the execution. In my experience, positive reps tend to feel more sudden rushes of heroic motivation than negative reps since they have less chances to destroy things.

Or, like I said earlier, there was no reason for him to attack and he simply did it because he wanted to.
