I’ve been up to hunting krakens and the Omen recently, and got some questions about their behavior. Coders of AO, if you’re permitted to share this, could you explain a few things to me?
Krakens
What exactly triggers the tentacles to spawn? A ship, owned by a player, in the body’s vicinity? A player-steered ship? A player themselves?
When a tentacle is hit, what is its target priority? The player who attacked it? The nearest player? The ship belonging to the player who attacked it? The nearest player-owned ship? From what I’ve noticed, it only ever goes for the ship once, and then forgets the ship exists and aims for the player (granted, the player isn’t located on the ship during all this).
What is the damage threshold required to fend off a tentacle that has grabbed a ship?
Giant Krakens
How far from the player does the available area for a body to spawn stretch? Feels like I’m flicking sensing constantly, but the Dark Sea’s krakens still manage to sneak in, I never see them coming.
How close to an island can a kraken/the Omen spawn? Is there some kind of a no-spawn zone around the islands?
The Omen
What is the spawning area of the Omen? Some Epicenter-sized circle at Insanity 3-4 zones, located where the purple spot seen by sensing from the War Seas is? Or the Omen just has a small chance to spawn wherever in the Far Reaches, and the purple aura means nothing?
Do the Omen’s spawn chances increase in i4 zone compared to i3, or are they equal?
Can the Omen be sensed while in the Dark Sea? If yes, what is its aura’s colour? The same purple circle that hurts our eyes if stared at for too long like it has when viewed from the War Seas?

Since I already called in you all with these questions, here is an unrelated to the krakens one. Planned to ask it, but felt like making a separate topic for it is too much.
What is the deal with Grass Cape/Large Grass Cape accessories? They’re just simple vanity accessories, and yet I can’t find them anywhere, the only one I own I just bought from a random tailor npc at Caitara. Feel like there’s something wrong with these two.
Oh, its that simple? Uhh, bruh. So, can it be a chest item at Nimbus Wilds? Or is it exclusively an enemy drop? Because, if it is a chest item up there, then it may come with imbued/gilded modifiers from charts dug up at the Wilds
Im not coder but my experience with this bastard tell me a few things. Theoretically:
It depend on player, highly probable. I was doing tower in Ice Mines then suddenly this thing came out and I saw its health whittled down, prolly someone attack them but im pretty sure I am the one spawning it, as it was like 3-4 minutes before he even took damage
The target prio of the kraken seem to be the ship first, then player. How do I know? I once encounter a Kraken at Pellion rift and manage to climb the rift. My strat was to bait the tentacle toward me as it cannot reach me. Lo and Behold, as soon as I damage it, it submerged and grab my vessel. Only after I attack the tentacle it start to change its target to me.
Prolly 200-300. I use flintlock that deal around 148 damage and it wont release my ship, so I was forced to use axe slash which deal around 284 damage.
Also extra info, Berserker cant use Shot to kill tentacle. Just like white eyes and obolus. Idk about other move and smash and shockwave dont seem to work, not even selino. Dont try torrent yet. The only one I can use to attack (during grab) is axe-slash.
From my experience, it ain’t appearing nowhere. I’ve been at the Far Reaches five times, three of which - as a planned and well-prepared run specifically for fighting the Omen. I even joined an AU server, as where else would a highly dangerous, poisonous animal with murderous intentions live?
Hold on, you’re saying that the Aberration that Athena’s book mentions is not the Omen? Then, what is it? “A bigger threat to the War Seas than the Dark Sea“…
Well now I am feeling ashamed. I just put together a big dark sea thing that spawns in the far reaches and a big purple aura that is seemingly located in the far reaches. Why were these two added together?
Apollyon. And its existense was that one thing that didn’t fit into my belief of the Omen being the Aberration. Well, now there’s at least an explanation
But the hitbox of the tentacles is fully above water, whats the issue?
Maybe, when you were using abilities on tentacles wrapped around the ship, you aimed for where they are visually located? The hitbox is at the base of a tentacle, and it doesn’t move when the tentacle grabs a ship, meaning you need to aim where the base was when the tentacle appeared next to your ship, not at the visible location of the base nor at any other part of the tentacle
The abberation is being set up as the big bad final boss of the game.
The thing we must prevent from being unsealed (and will probably inevitably fail and have to fight) at all costs.
also if you’re using fighting styles to fight sea monsters, I’m sorry its time for a build change.
i hate the fact i cant use dragon fury against kraken tentacles as it just phases through them
same for non-projectile attacks, like, why they just dont hit?
