“Akane. Akane Moon. A good name, don’t you agree?”
The words sank through her pain-filled counsiusness like blocks of wood in the ocean. With each letter, another man fired his musket, sending a winged, humanoid corpse down from the dark, rain-laden sky with each shot. Expert marksmen, recriuted for the expedition by her father, captain of the ship Eranamere, who was transporting exotic jewels to Sameria, an island in the south.
Not that she’d known that until after, of course. She was too young to understand when the attack happened.
The dream vanished like snow in a fire. The only thing that remained was pain.
THUD
The small part of her consciousness that wasn’t incapicitated wondered what the noise was.

Whatever it was, it was happening every other second.

It was almost…metallic.

She became aware of another sensation. Something pressing into her upper arms, it was metallic as well. Her feet felt raw and-

-bloody, as if they’d been dragging along a stone brick floor, which, now that she thought about, they felt like that too.
THUD
Strangely, her back hurt the most, but it felt like there was a large, feathery blanket draped over it.
Her sleepiness gradually dropped away. She opened her eyes and saw absolutly nothing in one, and in the other, a stone brick floor. She looked right and saw an armored hand holding her arm. She looked left and saw the same thing.
“'Ey, look, Greig. The feathery one is awake.”
Feathery one?
She tried to move her shoulder blades to ease the cramps in her muscles. She didn’t know where she was, how she got there, or what Greig’s partner meant, but she might have to fight her way out.
