Add a journal/revamp the quest ui specifically to help new playershttps://forum.arcaneodyssey.dev/uploads/default/original/3X/7/4/7418b5fbf9d47e6b5a55a2a491d49de4a07ad7cc.png
I think generally we can agree that in AO isn’t a bandit beater in the slightest, and the only reason people going in blind call it that is because they end up going through the story mode, getting to the first level lock, and not knowing how to progress apart from the one or two repeatables they’ve found.
An update to the quest UI to include quests players have not found yet / a marker of their general location (leads you to the island before expanding into a bubble for you to look around and find the npc yourself) would be more then enough of a push to help newer players explore the map more rather then new players only sticking to the story related islands they’ve been to like they do now.
This change to the quest ui would help a lot of lost new players who aren’t sure where or how to find quests, gotta remember that on this platform a lot of games like this don’t encourage/even have exploration like AO does, telling a player they’ve unlocked a quest on an island they’ve never heard of before isn’t gonna be helpful enough to them.
These changes could be added through the current ui or another tool could be added named the player character’s journal, that could be accessible through the ui on the bottom left next to the inventory and player tabs, and it could look like this for example:
The idea behind this is that it can be used as a quick reference point for different information the player may need to refer to for example:
small descriptions of islands and the vendors there with their exploration tasks listed out like they are on the map with the xp rewards listed for completing them
side quests/repeatable quests and which islands they are on
the different npcs and side characters we’ve met so far
short descriptions/bios of the main characters with pictures attached so new players can link names to faces
all written from our point of view
This would help new players gain a better grasp of the world and scope of the game, since the issue isn’t really the lack of content, the issue is that new players are having trouble finding said content.
I’m sure someone else could make this look much prettier, but i just wanted to make an example to show what I mean visually, but the general goal here is to help diversify the way players are progressing and help them gain levels whichever way seems the most interesting to them.
looked through the trello before posting and couldn’t find anything related to making unfound side quests visible to the player with a tracker or any tabs related to a journal system
i agree the percentages aren’t neccesarry but it’d be nice to see everything your character has done and what you need to do to 100% the game all in one place like this,
maybe instead of seperate bars it could be one massive percentage bar that’s an average of all the other bars that covers all the current content in game
I don’t really care if they’re in one place or kept as they are now, but I guess I can see how it would be useful
not sure what one bar for maxing everything in the game would be useful for since there is no reward for it and the individual badges/titles already accomplish there being a reward, could make adding more areas just more of a hassle as well
yeah, i personally would prefer everything in one place but i can see how it’ll start getting overwhelming
maybe have tabs unlock over time to ease players in
ex:
after talking with morden, a notification will pop up saying smth like
“you can now log characters in your journal”
“you can now see story quests in your journal”
once you reach redwake, it’ll say
“you can now log locations in your journal” (imo if the location tab is the same thing as the map they should be seperate)
etc
giving it a sense of progression and so new players dont get overwhelmed the instant they open the journal tab
yeah could combine the journal with the info, shipyard and map ui to keep it all themed
(combine as in put those things in the journal ui as well but keep them readily acessable through the main ui)
i think this would be a really good idea too considering a lot of players might just ignore the journal if it doesn’t have attention brought to it somehow
