theres a couple still alive probably, they just arent operating as shipwrights anymore. theres also probably a couple of dudes who just mugged shipwrights tools off of dead bodies or killed atlanteans and are cracking chests open like beers.

Abyss Sea - Chest Parasites
Some parasites upon discovering a Dark Sealed chest can sometimes make their way into it and fall into some sort of hibernation.The thing that attracts them into the chest are blueprints and sailcloth that are covered in slight amount of essence from the Dark Sea. They can live in the chest for about four months before awakening on their own and going out to seek their target.
If some unfortunate soul opens such chest, three things can happen:

The parasite will awaken and immediately attack their target. Usually this happens when you open the chest very fast and with much noise.

The parasite unnoticed goes out of the chest and to the target. This is the most dangerous situation, as there it a very high chance that you will be infected. Better to watch around yourself when opening these chests. Usually this happens when you open the chest carefully, but with enough noise to wake the parasite up.

The parasite wonât notice anything and continue this hibernation. Best what can be done is to grabbing the parasite and putting it into a bottle with seawater. Then, you can give it to researchers. Just donât forget to feed the parasite with raw fish so it wonât die quickly. Usually this happens when you are very carefully with opening the chest and make no noise at all.

since dark sea chests are gonna be easier to find, thought I should make it still a bit of a risk to seek them out, and i think this works perfectly 
(though, still think a whole ass atlantean chilling in there is hilarious too)
The fact that atlanteans are constantly mutating means an octopus atlantean can just squeeze into a chest, mutate and fuse becoming one with the chest (which honestly sound terrifying, like you open a chest and its deformed face is staring back at you)
that opens up the door to so many new and horrifying possibilities
what else can an atlantean mutate into/fuse with? A piece of furniture?? A weapon? A WHOLE SHIP??
