Doom Island - The Next Day
~Pax’s POV~
When you wake up in the middle of the day after rowing to another island for hours the night before, I’m pretty sure that means you’re extremely tired.
But apparently, according to Roran, the guard I met last night, I have to pay him back for getting me a room to sleep in and helping me up the stairs to the village.
So here I am, bringing water and food to the guards in the training area.
Roran’s sparring with a female guard, so I put the tray of food and water on a nearby bench and watch him duke it out with the guard.
He easily disarms her and blocks all of her attacks afterwards. Apparently, he’s the best guard on the entire island. He’s really good.
Apparently there’s another person who sailed here from Savaria on a boat. I haven’t seen him yet but apparently he’s been trying to defeat Marua for the past few days.
The guards see me sitting on the bench next to the tray of food and water. Immediately, they all run over and grab a sandwich and a bottle of water.
“Hey Pax,” says Roran as he grabs a sandwich and takes a bite. “How’s it goin’?”
I shrug. I really have nothing to say to him.
“Y’know, I can teach you how to use that dagger,” he says. “I’m off tomorrow.”
“Let the kid rest for a day Roran,” one of the guards say. “Look at him, he’s exhausted.”
I bristle at the comment. I look Roran in the eye.
“Yea, sounds good,” I say.
“Ok great. I’ll wake you up at first light. Be rea-”
“A little help over here!?” someone yells behind me.
Everyone looks behind me. I do the same and my mouth falls open in shock and horror.
2 guards are carrying a kid on a stretcher. The kid looks horrible. His faced was puffy and bruised, there is a bruise circling his neck, and there are marks emitting some kind of black energy.
“Shit,” cursed Roran. “That’s the 3rd time that’s happened. Someone get him to the apothecary quickly.”
“Poor William,” someone muttered as the 2 guards ran towards a building.
And as I watch the kid get carried away, a sinking feeling fills my chest.
How am I going to help everyone if people come out looking like that?
