Cagney’s late.
I stand on the docks, looking for my girlfriend’s golden blonde hair. Officially, I’m here to escort her to her residence in Servenia City. The smell of fish and blood from the market mixes with the smell of the ocean. The guards I see here wrinkle their noses as a gust of wind sends the stench right at us.
I don’t react. I’ve smelled worse. These fucking softies know nothing of how the streets are.
I finally see her walking towards me. The people step out of her way not out of fear, but out of respect. I step up and hold out my hand to her. She shakes it.
“Ms. Kestos,” I say.
“Sonya,” she responds.
There’s so much I want to ask her, but I hold back. You never know who’s listening.
We walk to the carriage that will take us to the residence. People separate, making a pathway for us, respect in their eyes.
As we enter the carriage, I look her in the eye.
“How’d it go?” I ask.
“As well as you expect,” she responds.
I love Cagney more than anything else, but sometimes I worry for her safety.
