Currently, Aura/Focus buff only the thing they’re used on (with the sole exception of resistance auras/forcuses), which not only places resistance aura/focus on a higher tier compared to the other 3 auras, but also means aura is objectively better on magics that have a better resistance affinity, so magics like metal benefit the most from the spell.
So I suggest that Auras and Focuses will now apply their effect to the character rather than only the thing that used the aura/focus. So if you used a power aura/focus then youll get a boost to your power on everything. To balance this, we can have different affinities for magics/fighting styles just like the resistance aura.
Glass could have the best power aura affinity, Light could have the best speed aura affinity, Explosion could have the best destruction aura affinity, fighting styles idrk but you get the idea.
Alternatively, each aura/focus could have its own unique stat buffs or even drops and we remove the “type” altogether, so like light magic would get a big speed boost, slight power boost, but decent size nerf. (Though I don’t really like that idea, but ill put there anyway to see what people think of it)
Eeeeeh I only agree if all buffs of aura/focus are standardized between magic and styles. No differences. Because it feels really wrong if there are still objectively better buffs, AND they apply to everything. I never liked the varying efficiency of buffs.
On an unrelated different rework, personally I’m really not a fan of purely positive temporary buffs. I suggested many times before AO released publicly, as a tester during the closed beta, to have aura work like Shulk’s Monado Arts in Smash:
All upsides have a different downside. Doesn’t have to be zero-sum, but still, similar downside to the strength of the buff.
Quick activation, perhaps almost instant. Doesn’t necessarily need a huge magic energy cost.
Can be cast again to be canceled, necessary when these are not purely positive buffs.
Perhaps way shorter duration and shorter cooldown, moreso a “activate on the fly” feel.
Applies to your character as a whole, both the buffs and nerfs.
Unfortunately that never got added and I have no hope for it in the current state AO is. I just like rambling about that old idea.
fair enough, i do agree that its a bit weird that one magic (metal) has a resistance aura more than 7 times better than another magic (glass), but on the other hand i do feel like it gives magics more of an identity, glass having a high affinity for power makes sense because it kind of places it in a glass cannon build archetype (further supported by its arcmancer)
i do like this idea, and having it slowly drain energy like using flight or hover, but i feel like that would make it too high maintenance so people may not like it
iirc this is how modes work in world of magic
however, the energy drain is so massive that the spell is just completely useless
if energy consumption is toned down i could see it working
