and it gives me more money than if I had just not accepted the contract

According to the Wiki you gain between 50-500 galleons when you hunt with a poster, and the range depends on how much renown they have. For NPCs i’d imagine it’s almost always closer to the lower end. I’ve actually never paid attention to this myself though, so might not be able to take me at my word

The way I see it they are mostly there to track players or NPCs and punish you if you lose the fight.

I think it does depend on the NPC’s lv though. The estimates I have here are mainly for lv 160 npcs, I think 260 drops higher
However I haven’t bounty hunted in a considerable amount of time so I may be misremembering.
