Cannon Fist Rework Rant and a Call for Answers Regarding it

TL;DR: READ, NINCOMPOOP, READ!

For those that aren’t aware, this is currently on the patch notes on the trello:

  • Cannon Fist no longer consumes cannonballs and no longer has an ammo selection UI, and it now uses Heavy Cannonballs at all times.
  • Cannon Fist damage affinity 0.7x → 0.875x

I think the Cannon Fist rework is a mistake. The reason I liked Cannon Fist is being able to be a cannon, including being able to change cannonballs. What is Cannon Fist without this feature? Basic Combat with a different stat spread and a ranged M1.

I have two Cannon Fist characters, a warlord and a gold metal warlock. The Warlord was one of the first builds I thought up, with the fantasy of imagining my character holding an entire cannon and shooting it, which sounds really cool to me, and with hand cannons coming up, it would have been even better. The warlock, I just had an idea: “What if I was a rich guy throwing money at people?”, which works a lot better with grapeshot to have the effect of throwing a lot of coins instead of only one. I have also seen people mention their usage of Cannon Fist, mainly grapeshot’s synergy with Crystal and trading bleeding for higher base damage.

There’s a few opinions in favor of this I have seen, and I will address them. First, there were some treating the damage buff as a good enough reason for this change, which I think is flawed reasoning. Warlords get a better stat stick, Cannon Fist deals more damage by default, and all it cost was what made Cannon Fist what it is. There was also some remarks about Cannon Fist’s popularity, which isn’t a good reason at all. Not everything needs to be popular, it’s fine to have niche choices. Or should Wood get sanded down next? The second to last reason I read was that it was difficult to balance, to which I say I’d rather it be slightly underpowered and interesting than balanced and dull.

The best reason I saw was that it can be expensive to keep up with the cannonballs, which I agree with, and it can really run into trouble if a new player/character picks it up as soon as possible. I think that having Heavy or Normal cannonballs as a non-depleting choice would be a good way to handle this issue. As for the balance issues, I’ve already said how I feel about balance overall, I think pick the non-depleting cannonball as a baseline, and slightly tweak the others. Probably easier said than balanced, but feel free to err on the side of underpowered.

I hope to see the upcoming Cannon Fist changes reverted and the cannonball upkeep problem resolved, so that people that liked Cannon Fist get to keep Cannon Fist, and the people that can’t afford Cannon Fist get an option to make use of Cannon Fist.

No, this title is not going to get old any time soon.

There’s a cannon fist rework?

thats what im saying

what is even going on what are the changes

i must know

  • Cannon Fist no longer consumes cannonballs and no longer has an ammo selection UI, and it now uses Heavy Cannonballs at all times.
  • Cannon Fist damage affinity 0.7x → 0.875x

It is on the Trello.

closer to a completely fuck over than a rework

cfist is still just gonna be a better basic albeit less expensive and to a lesser extent

I couldn’t have said it better myself: Cannon Fist is just gonna be a better Basic Combat!

im too tired to read tone but have fun

I agree with you that this rework is questionable, but I’d also appreciate if people’d stop parodying my thread.

It kinda lost the impact after the first time.

Only if you make a “Rant and a Call for Answers Regarding it Thread” Rant and a Call for Answers Regarding it thread.

no david you cant have 300 damage m1s anymore

Level 60+ Wooden Shovel Rant and a Call for Answers Regarding It

but yeah i do think a lot of cannonfist’s spark was it being able to use different cannonballs. as a general case i’d rather the game be unbalanced and novel than balanced and bland

(or any stacking status effects such as light’s blindness)

i clicked on this because i thought it was gonna be satire from the title

After testing Cannon Fist post rework, I think I like the reworked version of the fighting style much better.

  • No lag from ammo
  • No dissatisfaction of draining from my hard earned cannonballs
  • Good impact damage with DoT
  • CFist Warlord is actually viable now

Might actually become a CFist main after this instead of Basic Combat.

plus you still have the ranged m1s and ship damage

I like cfist right now as how it is

I can snipe enemies with light canonballs while my friends distract and do the tanking

I can aim in the air with (heavy) grapeshot and bombard the battlefield with relentless artillery

I can use chainshot to slow enemy’s ships

I can equip heavy exploding shells and charge right into battle, being the aoe menace that my savant file (which has the cfist) will never be able to do due to its tier limitations, or just do massive damage to the person and maybe their ship as well

Cfist gave me memories, especially good ones
With it, i managed to (accidentally) kill a ganker with a far more meta build, higher kill(death) ratio and hours

Don’t change it.

Brother if you’ve put any amount of time into the game you know your cannonball count should be in the thousands by now
