TL;DR: READ, NINCOMPOOP, READ!
For those that aren’t aware, this is currently on the patch notes on the trello:
- Cannon Fist no longer consumes cannonballs and no longer has an ammo selection UI, and it now uses Heavy Cannonballs at all times.
- Cannon Fist damage affinity 0.7x → 0.875x
I think the Cannon Fist rework is a mistake. The reason I liked Cannon Fist is being able to be a cannon, including being able to change cannonballs. What is Cannon Fist without this feature? Basic Combat with a different stat spread and a ranged M1.
I have two Cannon Fist characters, a warlord and a gold metal warlock. The Warlord was one of the first builds I thought up, with the fantasy of imagining my character holding an entire cannon and shooting it, which sounds really cool to me, and with hand cannons coming up, it would have been even better. The warlock, I just had an idea: “What if I was a rich guy throwing money at people?”, which works a lot better with grapeshot to have the effect of throwing a lot of coins instead of only one. I have also seen people mention their usage of Cannon Fist, mainly grapeshot’s synergy with Crystal and trading bleeding for higher base damage.
There’s a few opinions in favor of this I have seen, and I will address them. First, there were some treating the damage buff as a good enough reason for this change, which I think is flawed reasoning. Warlords get a better stat stick, Cannon Fist deals more damage by default, and all it cost was what made Cannon Fist what it is. There was also some remarks about Cannon Fist’s popularity, which isn’t a good reason at all. Not everything needs to be popular, it’s fine to have niche choices. Or should Wood get sanded down next? The second to last reason I read was that it was difficult to balance, to which I say I’d rather it be slightly underpowered and interesting than balanced and dull.
The best reason I saw was that it can be expensive to keep up with the cannonballs, which I agree with, and it can really run into trouble if a new player/character picks it up as soon as possible. I think that having Heavy or Normal cannonballs as a non-depleting choice would be a good way to handle this issue. As for the balance issues, I’ve already said how I feel about balance overall, I think pick the non-depleting cannonball as a baseline, and slightly tweak the others. Probably easier said than balanced, but feel free to err on the side of underpowered.
I hope to see the upcoming Cannon Fist changes reverted and the cannonball upkeep problem resolved, so that people that liked Cannon Fist get to keep Cannon Fist, and the people that can’t afford Cannon Fist get an option to make use of Cannon Fist.
No, this title is not going to get old any time soon.
