Introduction
Along with World of Magic’s music, I also quite liked how the bosses were kind of just hanging out in the middle of a field somewhere, and were practically just very much stronger versions of players. Because of this, I thought, hey, why not make a spiritual successor to those in some way? Just without actually making bosses, because that’s not allowed. They’ll be called Champion NPCs.
Implementation
Champion NPCs are NPCs that appear highlighted on the bounty or contract board once every thirty minutes. They can spawn anywhere a wanted criminal or hero can, and they are very powerful.
Once they detect you, they can say the following:
PLAYER HAS POSITIVE RENOWN/FAME
“A single ant reveals itself to a lion and expects to win. Repugnant.”
“I’d give you a moment to reconsider, but today hasn’t been treating me well. Goodbye!”
“Pft- Haha! HAHAHAHA! AAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAAH! GET OUT OF MY SIGHT!”
PLAYER HAS EITHER/ IS NEUTRAL
“You? Against me? We’ll see about that.”
PLAYER HAS NEGATIVE RENOWN/A BOUNTY
“Looks like I’m getting those cannon upgrades, after all!”
“I’ll do what the Grand Navy couldn’t! You die here!”
“Justice has chosen me to strike you down! You don’t stand a chance!”
Here are some characteristics of theirs:
- They are level 200-250. This would make them very difficult to fight alone, and while Commodore Kai and Architect Merlot are technically stronger, these make up for that in a few ways.
- They can only spawn with pure builds. (Mage, Berserker, Warrior… Warden, I guess.) Pure builds just exert a sheer feeling of power more than hybrids do.
And I want you and I to suffer even more against mages. - They have access to rare spells/techniques/weapons. They can throw a Pulsar, Javelin, Axe Slash, or Selino at you. I hope you know how to deal with Surge.
HOWEVER, they:
- Cannot access Ultimate Arts. Why? They’re too focused on learning every move they can about their class to give any attention to them.
- Cannot use aura/focus. There’s a reason Merlot doesn’t and Kai can’t.
- Typically replace basic (and important) spells/techniques like Blast, Beam, Smash, and Crash with their rare scrolls.
So, they can pretty easily kick your ass. But, upon death, you can get these death quotes:
PLAYER HAS POSITIVE RENOWN/FAME
“N-no… IMPOSSIBLE! HOW COULD THIS BE?!”
“I suppose not, then… this day keeps getting worse.”
“HAHAHAH, HAH, heheha, heh… euh… So that’s it.”
PLAYER HAS EITHER/IS NEUTRAL
“You can’t be serious… is this real?”
PLAYER HAS NEGATIVE RENOWN/A BOUNTY
“My… my boat… Damn you!”
“How could I lose…? What… What kind of monster are you?”
“Has justice abandoned me? W-why?”
As well as the rewards for killing the guy.
- A guaranteed rare spell/technique scroll.
- Three guaranteed uncommon weapons, possibly a chance for the Vindicator (or any other rare weapon that isn’t atlantean/sunken).
- A few gems.
- 3-4 bronze sealed chests spawn at their spawnpoint.
- 250-300 whole galleons.
They’d provide a faster way to obtain spell scrolls or weapons for people who are good enough at the game to face them. If you fight one as a group, the rewards are diminished, and only one of you is given a scroll.
