Introduction

Along with World of Magic’s music, I also quite liked how the bosses were kind of just hanging out in the middle of a field somewhere, and were practically just very much stronger versions of players. Because of this, I thought, hey, why not make a spiritual successor to those in some way? Just without actually making bosses, because that’s not allowed. They’ll be called Champion NPCs.

Implementation

Champion NPCs are NPCs that appear highlighted on the bounty or contract board once every thirty minutes. They can spawn anywhere a wanted criminal or hero can, and they are very powerful.

Once they detect you, they can say the following:

PLAYER HAS POSITIVE RENOWN/FAME
“A single ant reveals itself to a lion and expects to win. Repugnant.”
“I’d give you a moment to reconsider, but today hasn’t been treating me well. Goodbye!”
“Pft- Haha! HAHAHAHA! AAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAAH! GET OUT OF MY SIGHT!”
PLAYER HAS EITHER/ IS NEUTRAL
“You? Against me? We’ll see about that.”
PLAYER HAS NEGATIVE RENOWN/A BOUNTY
“Looks like I’m getting those cannon upgrades, after all!”
“I’ll do what the Grand Navy couldn’t! You die here!”
“Justice has chosen me to strike you down! You don’t stand a chance!”

Here are some characteristics of theirs:

  • They are level 200-250. This would make them very difficult to fight alone, and while Commodore Kai and Architect Merlot are technically stronger, these make up for that in a few ways.
  • They can only spawn with pure builds. (Mage, Berserker, Warrior… Warden, I guess.) Pure builds just exert a sheer feeling of power more than hybrids do. And I want you and I to suffer even more against mages.
  • They have access to rare spells/techniques/weapons. They can throw a Pulsar, Javelin, Axe Slash, or Selino at you. I hope you know how to deal with Surge.

HOWEVER, they:

  • Cannot access Ultimate Arts. Why? They’re too focused on learning every move they can about their class to give any attention to them.
  • Cannot use aura/focus. There’s a reason Merlot doesn’t and Kai can’t.
  • Typically replace basic (and important) spells/techniques like Blast, Beam, Smash, and Crash with their rare scrolls.

So, they can pretty easily kick your ass. But, upon death, you can get these death quotes:

PLAYER HAS POSITIVE RENOWN/FAME
“N-no… IMPOSSIBLE! HOW COULD THIS BE?!”
“I suppose not, then… this day keeps getting worse.”
“HAHAHAH, HAH, heheha, heh… euh… So that’s it.”
PLAYER HAS EITHER/IS NEUTRAL
“You can’t be serious… is this real?”
PLAYER HAS NEGATIVE RENOWN/A BOUNTY
“My… my boat… Damn you!”
“How could I lose…? What… What kind of monster are you?”
“Has justice abandoned me? W-why?”

As well as the rewards for killing the guy.

  • A guaranteed rare spell/technique scroll.
  • Three guaranteed uncommon weapons, possibly a chance for the Vindicator (or any other rare weapon that isn’t atlantean/sunken).
  • A few gems.
  • 3-4 bronze sealed chests spawn at their spawnpoint.
  • 250-300 whole galleons.

They’d provide a faster way to obtain spell scrolls or weapons for people who are good enough at the game to face them. If you fight one as a group, the rewards are diminished, and only one of you is given a scroll.

The level, attacks, and rewards of the champion would adjust based on what sea you’re in, too.

I don’t know man, sometimes hybrids builds can far outpower pure builds. Though I do admit, their attacks have a certain oomph to them.

“Haah… I’ll see you again in Elysium.”

They were not seen in Elysium.

To avoid the whole players killing each other over the chests / killing other people so only you can get the scroll, there will be champions available to the public every 30 minutes but you can also find a scroll detailing one

Rare Champion Scrolls will detail a champion on the sea’s lower end, Exotic ones will be the higher end champions, and Legendary ones will be picked from a set of fixed pre-made guys for that sea who are all equal to the sea’s faction commanders (300 in the bronze sea)

This scroll tells you where they are, and only you know and your party know, though someone could easily stumble upon them if they just randomly check islands. This lets you fight them with your party or clan, or at least have a head start.

HOWEVER

You can also interact with a bounty board and “Post Champion,” which will make it public. When the champion dies, you get some payment though this doesn’t come from the boss drops

Tsk tsk tsk, a guaranteed drop rate? Go to the gulag and learn from your crimes against humanity

Nice suggestions tho

I’m 90% sure merlot uses an aura, and it makes his presence that more terrifying because of its massive size. Also, interesting suggestion, it would be interesting if they had their own unique spells/weapons/techniques that you would get upon killing them. While I agree that pure builds exude power and terror at high levels . . .
Have you done the math on what a hybrid build is able to do at level 250 of the current update?
The prospect is in and of itself, quite the horrifying scene.

yeah i get that but if they just functioned as normal level 250 npcs without any restrictions they’d just suck to fight
no one wants to eat an ultimate art metal pulsar and then get flash striked a second later

Fair, pure builds are still quite the excessively scary NPC to fight

If warden then yes

I just had a idea… Great Champions…

(champions on steroids)

Given the nonsense current criminals can pull off with a level cap of 160, I don’t want to imagine what Nimbus sea criminals can pull off.

Merlot actually does use Aura and Kai’s Saber doesn’t have an aura/focus move

for the suggestion itself, kinda weird that they’re only pure builds, because with hybrids they have a greater chance of spawning with imbues and impossible arsenals (2 Magics and 2 FS type of shit Rivals are doing rn)

Criminals in general can spawn with builds that are normally unobtainable, take for example Lester here who was I believe level 128.

ermm goku? spoilers??? banmed.
