Currently, names tend to be redundant, irrelevant, and hardly seen. Here are some things that could change that:
When you see the player currently it’s:
(player level)
(player IGN)
(player title)
However, it should be changed to:
(player level)
(player character name)
(player IGN)
(player title)
Give ALL NPCs names, regardless of how “minor” they are.
Sometimes, I see a really memorable pirate npc that says some cool dialogue such as “Pirates? Navy? It doesn’t matter once we’re done with you.” I want to be able to remember them by a name instead of “pirate NPC that I killed.”
Along with that, make NPCs follow this format for their overhead:
(NPC level)
(NPC full name)
(NPC role/title)
Make ALL npcs (with the exception of assassin journeyman) have a full name.
This mainly applies to crew NPCs that you hired and bounties. I want my crewmate to have a full name of something like “Walter White” instead of just “White.” Based on this, minor characters could have a backstory that the player could infer based on their last name.
Agreed, I think the reason player names were removed was because of exploiters and people with the same names since in WoM it only showed something like this:
(level)
(character name)
However, with this format (stated below this), it should still let players have the freedom of names while keeping exploiters at bay.
(player level)
(player character name)
(player IGN)
(player title)
eeeh we dont need an even more cluttered overhead UI for players, and seeing the account’s name is a lot more practical than the character’s name.
for criminal npcs (mainly rivals), i much prefer a simple and cool last name rather than finding some grammar nerd introducing themselves with their full name while trying to stab me to death.
for pirates, the crew is much weaker and never says anything so its easier to keep up with the captain and quartermaster, who are the only named pirates and, as they are the main threat by far, can be distinguished from the others, rather than seeing 10 names spamming the chat and not knowing who to focus on.
