At the higher end of the hierarchy within the Deadmen Pirates sits the Four Quartermasters; The four enforcers handpicked by Davy Jones, the Right Hand, and the Left Hand. However, only four may exist at once, and they tend to specialize in one specific thing. Today, we will be looking at the quartermaster who uses Magic.
“When I fell to the sea, I thought the people here would be different, but they hate all the same. I tried to believe it was in my head, I wanted to believe it… but you’re all the same hateful, spiteful monsters, killing each other because of where you live. And for that, I will rain holy fire unto this forsaken earth!”
-Allanon Anavasi, AKA Allanon the Phoenix
Allanon Anavasi, AKA Allanon the Phoenix, is the quartermaster of the Deadmen Pirates who uses magic. Allanon’s physical appearance has not changed since he was last seen in the Nimbus Wilds, however his hair is now longer and very disheveled, giving him the appearance of a wild man. Allanon’s unpredictable temper and almost constant murderous rage has made him a prime contender against Watson for being the most feared quartermaster. Allanon, after joining the Deadmen Pirates, now wears baggy black pants tied off at his ankles by metal cuffs, a belt with a metal buckle reflecting the Deadmen Pirates’ Jolly Roger, and a pair of pauldrons made from the beak of a Kraken with the pauldrons connected by a chain in the front and back. The front chain is adorned with multiple shark teeth.
Allanon, despite becoming a violent, cold-blooded killer, is still highly intelligent and puts it to good use as the Deadmen Pirates’ intelligence agent. Even when he is not doing research or recon for Davy Jones, he is found reading. It’s one of the very few things that makes him feel like he’s normal again. As a result, he is seen as shut-off by the rest of the crew, but the higher-ups know better; He’s always watching and always listening. If a mutiny is being organized in secret, he’ll know longer before they can do any damage.
Allanon only trains against the Left and Right hands, both of whom use magic like himself. These matches are simply meant as spars and end before someone dies despite the matches being violent and explosive. Despite Allanon’s immense power, the Left and Right hands have beaten him every time with only minor injuries.
When first joining the crew, Allanon was very violent and aggressive, however he was quelled and basically tamed by Davy Jones after the Water Curse user put him in his place by bringing him within an inch of death without moving a muscle. This traumatic event has led Allanon , even when in a bloody and murderous rage, to immediately cower before Davy Jones.
After his defeat in the Nimbus Wilds of the Skyhall kingdom and being banished, falling over the edge, Allanon would plummet to the sea. Only a split second before hitting the water would his magic return to him, saving him from death. However, he would be knocked unconscious by the impact, the damage he sustained healing over the days he drifted unconscious on the surface of the water. He would eventually awaken to find himself beached on a small island where he would try to stave off his thirst and hunger.
For a few days, Allanon would remain in isolation on this island, processing everything he had experienced. In his contemplation, he would ultimately decide to set out and finally learn about the people of the sea. He would fly from the island and head to his first destination; Palo Town. Here, he would be enthralled by tales from sailors, merchants, and marines, also spending much of his time reading the Agora and other books or scrolls he could get his hands on. At first, the tails of pirates and criminals do not deter him, he considers them outliers and keeps a positive mindset about how people interact. After some time at Palo Town, making enough money to get by doing work on the docks, he leaves Palo Town and makes his way to Shell Island.
Once he arrives at Shell Island, he takes to learning about its natives and their culture almost immediately. He also offers to help them hunt, gather, fish, and do whatever else is needed. Up until now, Allanon has been incredibly kind, friendly, and personable, however that changes when he gets into an argument with Caria after she’s had too much seawater. However, rather than engaging, Caria tells Allanon to get lost. Now furious, Allanon goes to a secluded part of the island and ends up unleashing his magic to vent his anger, shooting blasts of phoenix flames out into the sea over and over. Eventually, once both calmed down, Caria and Allanon apologize to one another and go separate ways once more. The next day, Allanon’s curiosity gets the better of him and he asks a guard about the banners hanging around the village. This is his introduction to the Ravenna Kingdom.
Now interested in Ravenna, he flies to the island and lands in the Shining Plains, where he makes his way to Tiberia. Seeing the poverty and the strife breaks his heart, and he does whatever he can to help the people. His first interactions here, while friendly, are not pleasant. He learns about how the previous king had been murdered, but he is told that evidence has been revealed that King Calvus IV was an evil man part of some kind of cult. He is also told about how the royal family had abandoned Tiberia, making empty promises to fix the dilapidated town. However, he is also informed that a young man is trying to help reform the kingdom, attempting to find a ruler who will be a kind and just person.
For multiple weeks, Allanon does whatever he can to assist the people of Tiberia, but during this time, he would meet and befriend the revolutionary trying to help the kingdom, Neviro. The two would form a solid friendship, and this would eventually lead to Neviro telling Allanon about the history the royal family hid, mainly the genocide of Winterveil. Allanon would also learn about Ravenna’s politics, learning about their ally in Sameria, and their enemies in the Thorne Empire and Keraxe Kingdom.
Allanon would remain in Ravenna for another month, however he would begin having doubts about the sea, beginning to see that they hate one another just like how his people hate people from the sea. He would finally leave after hearing how the former prince, Prince Revon, had been stripped of his authority and banished from the kingdom. After his departure from Ravenna, he would return to the Nimbus Sea.
Upon his arrival, he would witness the result of the war between Sameria and the Keraxe, and it’d make his blood run cold. In desperation, he would briefly stop by Sameria for only a few days before flying to the Vimir Sea. When he arrived at Jotunheim, he would not be greeted warmly, the warrior people being wary of his arrival. He would see their efforts to engage in the war, and even catch a brief glimpse of Wotan himself.
After this, he would flee Jotunheim in a desperate attempt to find some semblance of peace in these seas, but he would find none. He would go from island to island, learning about the people, their inhabitants, and the history of the War Seas and its kingdoms. With each island he visited, Allanon would grow more and more desperate until he would finally snap, finally admitting to himself that these people are all rotten, that they all hold hatred in their hearts, that they kill each other in mass amounts for, in his eyes, no reason. After this realization, Allanon would begin flying over the seas, hunting ships adorned with kingdom flags and sinking them, killing everyone on board.
Allanon would quickly begin gaining a bounty, and soon it’d attract bounty hunters, assassins, and the Grand Navy. After gaining a bounty, Allanon would hunt and target assassin ships and navy ships as well, killing everyone on board and sinking the ships. However, during his extermination efforts, Allanon would be struck from the sky by a navy Vice Admiral who wields Inferno Magic and taken into custody. The ship Allanon was on would not reach the prison he’d be held in.
The previous magic quartermaster, a man named Langley, had destroyed the ship using his Frostmetal Magic. After the ship began to sink, Allanon was taken from the ship and pulled onto the deck. Langley would break Allanon’s cuffs and take the young man back to the Slumbering Deep, however the trip would not be easy since Langley would keep Allanon in line and work him like a choreboy. Once they arrived, Langley would drag Allanon to meet Davy Jones himself.
Allanon was held prisoner in the Slumbering Deep, but Davy Jones would treat him incredibly well, almost lavishly. During this time, the two would confide in one another, and Davy Jones would agree with Allanon, that people were monsters full of hatred, and he’d slowly convince Allanon that he shouldn’t hide the hatred, the same hatred that lives inside everyone else and now inside himself as well. Over a few days of this subtle manipulation, Allanon agreed to join the Deadmen Pirates.
Allanon would begin climbing the ranks, but his unpredictable temper would result in being disciplined often multiple times a day. He wouldn’t be kept in the dorms like the other pirates for their safety, he was kept inside the prison. Davy Jones did make sure Allanon’s prison cell was lavish and comfortable. He would continue working to climb the ranks, but he would continue to be abused by Langley, who would be the main target of Allanon’s rage.
However, at long last, Allanon would finally snap and slice one of Langley’s eyes. Blinding Langley’s right eye would make the man fly into a rage, and he would throw Allanon in the Kraken’s Maw to kill him. Langley, who had immense power as a mage, would clash with Allanon in a violent display. It was a violent but brief clash, it would end in only three minutes. Langley would land a few solid blows on Allanon, but his Phoenix Magic would heal the injuries. Langley kept fighting back violently, roaring and yelling in pure rage, but his noise would end abruptly as Allanon would fire five thin beams of phoenix fire through Langley’s head. Both exchanged violent blows for three minutes, then in a quick instant, Allanon silenced it all.
From that day on, Allanon became the magic quartermaster, and his unpredictable temper made him incredibly feared as his rages would almost always lead crewmates to nearly dying. Multiple times, Allanon would be disciplined by the Left and Right hands, but he would finally be put in his place when Davy Jones would finally punish Allanon. The display was so horrible and so terrifying, that no one in the crew would ever speak about it. Even the Left and Right hands shudder at the mention of the event. After this horrible act of discipline, Allanon was put in his place and would carry out his order. However, little does Allanon know just how much deeper this all goes.
