Cloud's Beginning Guide to fleets and tips

Things you should know at the start

  1. Fleets take extremely long amounts of time to get into, However the initial grind can be automated.

  2. Deckhands only require DEDICATED Loyalty NOT MAX LEVEL.

  3. You only need FOUR deckhands as of now to control your entire fleet. Vice commander ships do not require deckhands.

  4. You can find your fleet captain’s location by clicking on their ship on the fleet menu, you do not need to pile up notes in your mail to save their location.

  1. Ships in your fleet seem to abandon their posts if your resources are “Low”, So make sure to keep your resources above 50% to play it safe.

  2. Fleet level increases when you increase a task level, Task levels aren’t free to level up and the “15k galleons” is the price of the upgrade after you max the level progress not a skip purchase.

  3. My fleet Level is 5 as of now and My fleet size is 1000+, I have unlocked conquest (dark sea) but haven’t used it. All I will talk about is things till then.

How should I start?

Begin with growing the deckhands you will send of to command ships, Their ship boosts shouldn’t matter.

Once you have one available deckhand Send them to command a ship you have added to your fleet.

This process will select the first available ship and will assign a random task to the deckhand.

Once a task is assigned, find your deckhand once his location updates (Use sensing to find them, makes it easier) and update their task to “PLUNDER/PATROL”

You have very low supporters and you need alot more before you actually get into the tasks

Repeat this 3 more times except, Set your deckhands to “RECOVER”.

Plunder will earn you supporters and rations

Recover will earn you back strength.

keep your fleet risk on minimize for now.

you should now have 3 RECOVER ships and 1 PLUNDER/PATROL ship.

Make sure to occasionally check your fleet and repair ships

Keep adding ships to your fleet if you have space.

Once you have finished this loop let the system slowly grind itself to power level 3-5. During this time you may do other things like charts or ship hunting (or both) which will greatly aid your fleet later.

Once you have reached a desired power level, You may change your fleet risk to “Maximize Profit” and change ONE RECOVER SHIP to whichever task you want to grind first.

(Personally I think Trading and Harvesting will be more useful over others)

This loop will now allow you to slowly upgrade your tasks on the go, From my testing it doesn’t seem worth to change multiple ships to tasks cuz it becomes a risky hassle. I prefer to play it safe without risking it.

All you need to do now is change the task grinding ship back to recover whenever your resources have dropped to near 50%

Maximize risk now wouldn’t cause too much issues assuming all your primary ships are ketches / brigs.

boom, you should now safely and effectively reach “Large Fleet Commander” assuming you have spent enough time in-game and should be able to easily level up tasks while getting used to the system.

IMPORTANT NOTES AND TIPS

When adding ships to your fleet it will fill the top most un-filled spot, If you wish then you can dismiss ships that aren’t brings/ketches and replace them with stronger ships. Just don’t bother once it goes below Vice Commander ships

I Personally recommend you pause your main ship’s deckhand progress until you are able to give all four of your fleet commanders their own brigs cuz it’s difficult and annoying to change them and I’m unsure if research will let you change ships later.

If you dismiss a fleet captain with a full ship of deckhands then they will get OBILERATED to ASHES. DECKHANDS ARENT ALLOWED TO STACK THE SAME PROFESSION SO AVOID RISKS.

Feel free to pause the fleet if the percentage drops too low, It’s completely safe now and your fleet captains will still randomly change islands so you can change tasks.

Reminder that vice ship captains take orders from your fleet captains and it’s uncontrollable, You only control the fleet captains.

remember to repair your ships when you can, even if it’s a little. Keep galleons in your hand you won’t lose that much from dying.

I will personally recommend avoiding dark sea if you do unlock it mostly because I have a feeling that upgrading it wouldn’t lead to anything meaningful as you will probably be much better at looting the dark sea.

However anything past here is just my guess, I have still not tested the dark sea conquest myself so take it with a grain of salt.

Remember, charts and ship hunting. Pair that with Seafaring talent which is objectively the best PVE talent RN.

I Recommend sitting in bronze sea cuz nimbus is absurdly big RN and the travel time sucked when I tested it.

Max level power is level 8

Deckhand help:

Confirmed that desertions may happen below 50%, Make sure to stay above 50% and remember to pause fleet activities if you can’t find your fleet captains (ALL resources count for this, more resource values being under 50% will probably increase desertion chances even more, Ships whether repaired or not will always have a chance to get deserted)

(If you have your own tips then just commend them down here, I’ll add em to this list if anything helps)

couple of my own stuff i have figured out:

the 3 recover 1 plunder (or patrol for fame players) is a real strat for infinite ship loot+follower gain, can confirm
you can gain followers on your own by sinking ships

replenishing food/supplies with money is NOT worth it UNLESS you are mega rich, it can cost thousands/10k+ drachma for a single resupply that gets drained in 3-4 ingame days.

the in-game descriptors for strength, food and supplies are actually pretty good, heres a summary anyway:

  • strength is gained by having ships on the RECOVER task, and is lost by doing
    any other task (unsure)
    • low strength (<30%) will randomly have ships in your fleet desert
  • food/supplies are gained by having ships on the PLUNDER/PATROL task, or buying it with drachma, and are lost by doing any other task
    • Food is the same as strength, <30% and you have random deserters
    • Supplies define whether your ships repair themselves with the investments from MINIMISING RISK order. low supplies make your ships not repair themselves (unsure)
MY OWN SPECULATION, I HAVE 0 PROOF FOR IT

I think the rewards you get scale (in amount) from the total amount of active people in your fleet. Therefore, you want as many ships as possible, no matter which ones or what position they are in. The damage dealt to them seems to be in percentage anyway, so a 1300 HP sailboat sinks at about the same rate as a 22k health brig

divanochi planned to make a full guide in Guides and Tutorials channel in a couple days, so watch out for that

Do you have any tips for quickly increasing my deckhands’ loyalty?

I suggest going to the AO Deckhand Wiki Page and scroll down to the Styles section.
Expand the list and see what Style your deckhand belongs to. Next to each Style is also a list of Items that they accept as gifts. You get more loyalty based on enchantments, modifiers and levels of the items.

If you unlock the change deckhand drip option then change it to knight, good chance that you have a much of knight and titanium armor.

or check what drip style’s armor/items you have more.

Recently the rate was buffed and uncommon items give WAY more loyalty points

Recover becomes usable later on actually, It’s just early game where it sucks.

I will really suggest not going below 50%

I had a few of my vice commander brigs jump ship because of that and I’m sure it wasn’t below 30

(also the speculation is probably correct, I kept a low count of people to reduce costs but after I started hiring every ship Im suddenly getting alot more money in return along with high risk)

how do you get a captain for the fleets cuz mine says inactive on the ships

@Dudeman

also you have to talk to a deckhand with max loyalty and hire them as a fleet captain

You need a devoted deckhand, then talk to him. It will give you the option to become a fleet captain.

For deckhands my suggestion would be to sacrifice one deckhand and then just grind out 3 new deckhands to max loyalty and then put them in one by one into your fleet. That way you still have 3 legendary deckhands and can train up a new fourth again if you want, or just keep an open space on your ship until (hopefully one day pinkies crossed) deckhand storage gets revamped to better integrate with the fleet system.

this is so complicated and resource/time consuming it may as well be a full time job

Once you have 3 command ships on recover with the 4th on plunder you can basically just afk + the occasional repair (you gain more drachmae than what is spent on repairs)

yeah, its probably not much for people who can farm like 500000 drachma but for me im getting 20k drachma in 4-8h (took me like ~24 straight hours of cargotrading on a caravel to get the 20k for the brig in 2022, for reference) while barely doing anything

definetly a lot of time with a lot of resource investment but imo the investment pays off (and also literally pays for itself too, haha)

Max level for power is level 8

which tasks generate drachma

I think it’s Trading and Exploring only. Plundering generates a little I think.

if youre positive renown then its patrol instead

yeah your right, I’ll edit that in actually.
