We should have a reputation system on the forum. user with trust level 2 can give either positive rep or negative rep to a user. and when a negative rep user reach a certain reputation threshold, they would be banned. this way there is a way to get rid of toxic and troll account from the forum (cough Mal). plus adding a way to reward people that is helpful to the community.
or an alternative to this is just add a rule that toxic and/or troll account will be muted for certain days.
honestly this is mainly because i want to get rid of mal and similar user from this forum
Rather than some convoluted vote-ban system for people with 15 or more days, why not just flag troll/toxic posts?
If people are actually harming the forum rather than just posting actively, moderation will take action.
As it stands, I’ve been seeing anti-mal circlejerk derailing threads much more than mal does.
They would get disliked for a reason, their aren’t any “inner circles” in this community so people who get low rep would get banned for a reason.
if someone is being a nuisance then let someone xcall a moderator for help and go through the respected channels. moderayors can also make others minimods (trust level 4) so we dont need community intervention as it would just lead to witch hunts
There’s nothing wrong with a reputation system, the only reason why somebody might not want it is fear of abuse or they are somebody who would get banned by it.
i worry about abuse and so should everyone else! there could be a caste system and doesnt help push the development of a community and people with new ideas or who are just disliked would be pushed away
What does an auto-ban reputation system achieve that flagging posts doesn’t, aside from giving TL2 members the ability to bypass moderation and ban people they don’t like?
Flagging posts is supposed to serve this exact purpose, except in the case of flagging a trusted moderator makes the final decision rather than a lynch mob.
Moderation is fully aware that donk and Mal’s posts are usually low quality, and that it bothers you and a number of other active users.
If this was a bannable offense, they would be banned.
Maybe I don’t like some random 7 year old making a low effort post with misinformation on half of every topic in the forum. What they say is technically isn’t against the rules but their posts can ruin entire topics.
And that’s entirely understandable - I can see why you want donk banned. I’d be lying if I said the low effort posts didn’t bother me either.
My point is that this isn’t a fair way of handling this - it’s not like moderation are unable to ban donk due to a technicality, they’ve chosen to let him stay.
I trust the moderators to moderate far more than I trust a bunch of anonymous TL2s dropping downvotes on the profiles of people they dislike.
You do have a point, maybe that’s a little too much power to the community. Still would like some way to keep certain people from replying on my posts though.
You can’t stop people from replying on your threads (that’d be against the spirit of discussion), but you can do the next best thing, making yourself completely unaware they replied:
If you head to a user’s profile, and then click on “Normal” at the top right under the message button, you can ignore them and you won’t recieve any notifications for posts they make, all their posts will be hidden by default, and their posts won’t cause threads to be marked as unread.
As far as you’re concerned, they stop existing.
Broadly speaking, I find most of the thread derailing doesn’t come from The Bad People™ - it’s the 5 or 6 people who consistently reply to every single bad post they make, and then all reply to the defensive response, and so on. Mal saying something wrong or stupid isn’t ruining the thread, but the 20 subsequent posts discussing what mal said instead of the topic certainly does.
A bit more restraint would go a long way.
that would be awesome! if the banning part is not appropriate. you can just make it so that negative rep user has a mark in everything they post. and add a new reputation tutorial stating that a post with a neg rep mark shouldn’t be blindly trusted or taken seriously. this way the community wouldn’t be taking seriously a toxic post and won’t be misled by false information.
