Chapter nine, the price of power
Connor quickly grabbed the book, key and the scimitar.
“Stay back!” Connor said, unsheathing the scimitar.
“Relax kid, I’m not here to hurt you” Rose said in a calm voice. “Just come with me, I don’t want trouble”
“Yeah right!” Connor blasted a hole in the wall and jumped out of the house.
A beam of gold magic flew directly over Connor’s head as he was falling. He hit the ground hard and started running. Gold beams continued to flay at him, one of them hit him square in the back.
CRACK
Connor fell to the ground, he suspected that a couple of ribs were broken.
“I need backup! Connor is resisting arrest!” Rose yelled into a message stone “Stand down Connor! It doesn’t have to be like this!”
“ngh, fuck off!” Connor blasted her with crimson lightning.
Rose flew back five meters and crashed to the ground. Connor stumbled to his feet, panting.
“That hurt, kid” Rose said as she got to her feet. “You should’ve just cooperated.”
Rose started building her energy, Connor used this opportunity to do the same. All of Rose’s limbs turned to solid gold. Connor’s body was cloaked in red and purple lightning.
Both combatants moved faster than the eye could blink. Connor’s every attack was blocked by Rose’s gold limbs, and Rose couldn’t seem to hit Connor before he moved just out of the way. Connor called down a bolt of red lightning, the Rose used one of her arms to block the attack.
“ENOUGH!” Rose exploded. Shards of gold dug into Connor as he was blasted backwards. “It’s over kid. My reinforcements have arrived.”
Connor looked around. Sure enough, there were soldiers surrounding them. He attempted to stand, but failed.
“Cough… why cant… you just… leave. ME. ALONE!?” The sky darkened as Connor’s energy spiked. He swung his scimitar down, what followed surprised everyone.
Tens if not hundreds of red lightning bolts were called down from the sky. Chaos ensued as the soldiers fired at Connor and were hit by lightning. Some soldiers were knocked out by the strikes others were badly wounded, but still awake. Rose was hit by 5 bolts. If Connor had not held back at the last second, the soldiers would have been killed.
Connor’s body was almost torn apart by the magic hitting him. He screamed as plasma, fire, light, darkness, crystal, and acid blasts impacted his body. Rose looked up to see his bloody form lying on the ground. She tried to walk over to him, but failed to get up.
“Command? This is Captain Rose, we need medic support immediately. Connor will not survive if you don’t follow… The soldiers might not either…” Rose reported weakly, as she faded to unconsciousness.
2 days later
Connor awoke in a medical bay. He struggled to get up.
“Don’t try it.” a voice warned
Connor looked over to see Jeremy sitting on a comfy looking chair.
“It seems you’ve found out how use that lighting of yours.” Jeremy remarked
“My wha-, fuck, is everyone okay?” Connor asked in a panicked voice.
“Through some sort of miracle, nobody was killed. They’re still recovering in the rooms down the hall. Including Rose.” Jeremy answered. “Here’s a good question, why do you care?”
“I kill people who deserve it. If I killed any of those soldiers… Well, I’m not sure I’d be able to live with myself. Especially when you consider that by killing soldiers, I might be killing even more people who would’ve been protected by those soldiers.”
“Ha. A criminal with a conscience, never seen that before.” Jeremy spat
“Jeremy, I didn-” Connor began
“COMMISSIONER JEREMY!” another voice boomed
Jeremy jumped to his feet and saluted “Major Daniel! Sir!”
“WHAT IN THE GODDAM HELL ARE YOU DOING HERE?!” Daniel boomed
“I was ah… Paying respects to my brother before he was executed! Yes thats-” Jeremy hastily explained before he was silenced by the raise of a hand.
“Dammit, I must have forgotten. This is why Gem keeps telling me I should write things down. Anyways,” Daniel said, clearly disappointed in himself. “Jeremy, we knew from the start that Connor didn’t, nor did his guild, murder Isabel.”
“WHAT!?” both brothers exclaimed
“Yes, we’ve had specialists following him ever since the siege of Culumnus town. We also had them watch his guildmates after they joined up with him. In short, there is no way Connor committed the murder. The reason we arrested him was because he continued to dodge questions about his magic, most soldiers and commissioners weren’t told about the real reason for the arrest in case they went rogue and tried to harm Connor before we got to him. Everything went according to plan, we had Connor and his guildmates surrounded, most of them surrendered, and King David didn’t immediately kill Connor. The only problem, was when Connor escaped the supposedly unescapable Winter Complex.” Major Daniel explained. “So, we’re adding that to our list of questions”
“So… I’m free to go?” Connor asked
“Haha… No. One, you’re still heavily injured. Two, we still have questions for you. Three… Well… You’ve show us that you’re too dangerous to be left to roam free.” Daniel answered with a smile
