A pretty lame suggestion I made for some cool bonus content that could work in the dark sea, probably not amazing, but could be interesting.

Proposal

The dark seas will contain a new and rare type of deckhand with unique cosmetics and dialogue that can be recruited from islands found on your expeditions. Similar to normal deckhands, they grant boosts to the ship, however the boost is much more noticeable and potent, in exchange, these “dark” deckhands will have insanity effects as a drawback.

To combat this, a new type of regular deckhand found in the sea clusters can be obtained, they grant boat stats, but also have warding effects, essentially making them useful for dark sea exploration + countering the insanity that dark deckhands come with.

Details

What does a dark deckhand look like?
A dark deckhand resembles a strange, magically irradiated human that can have parts of their body replaced with magic, or magical elements protruding from them in odd places. they can also be ghostlike (resembling the ghosts you might encounter at akursius keep, but perhaps with unique colors that reflect the stat boost they grant, as well as some extra details like a ghostly cape and captains hat). When deckhands will be able to fight alongside players, they will not be very different compared to normal deckhands, offering the same combat potential as a regular one, making all of the visuals mostly cosmetic.

How can I obtain one?
As stated prior, dark deckhands can be found on islands located in the dark sea, the farther you go, the higher quality, more bizarre looking, and more forbidden they become, meaning they will grant even more insanity if put on a ship. As for requirements to hire one, they are unique in the fact you need to repeatedly battle and defeat them, to prove you are a worthy captain that they should respect (credits to @bio for this idea). Similar to a rival, once you battle one you need to defeat them 2 more times. They’ll respawn on an island near the one they died on waiting for the player to find them. you’ll know when they respawn when a notification appears in your messages that says something like “you feel as if someone is calling you to the dark sea” or something.

Once this criteria is met, they become deckhands for you, this also makes high tier deckhands harder to obtain since they are located deeper into the dark sea.

What’s up with warding deckhands?
Warding deckhands are pretty much normal deckhands, but they come with the warding secondary effect, allowing them to weaken insanity effects that dark deckhands and the dark sea may cause.

Similar to dark deckhands, they can come with different tiers of warding, making it wise to use a high warding deckhand with a powerful dark deckhand to counterbalance the insanity.

final notes
This idea could be expanded on a little more, maybe it could tie in with ghost ships too, but I think this is a good base idea and I want to hear your guys’ opinions on it.

They could sorta resemble this, maybe with other variations such as being more sea creature like or as I said earlier, with magical parts instead of normal limbs, getting more contorted and bizarre the further you go into the dark sea.

And if you’re wondering, they could have unique dialogue whenever edward or enzior or whoever else announces a command.

More cool content that is easy to do

I mean the designing might be a little hard but beyond that they could be pretty fun to have on your ship + you can flex them to other players

If this gets in somehow, this better not be based on renown.

It be not only be disappointing, but it will be illogical. If you were in their shoes, you would not give a crap about how famous they are in the war seas. You need solid proof that they are worthy to be their deckhand.

To add on to the uniqueness of their acquisition, they can give you quests that can only done on the dark seas or you can just duel them like in other suggestions.

that’s pretty cool actually if you can obtain them via battling them

Would be cool if they could be obtained like Rivals

  • Hunt the dark sea Deckhand across the dark seas until finally they “Acknowledge” your strength and decide to follow you. This would make it an actual effort to obtain these deckhands, and also give re-playability to the dark seas since you’d likely have to enter multiple times in order to get one, or risk your boat breaking to get them in one run.

  • Additionally you can have certain deckhands per each insanity level in the dark seas, with layer 1 being the easiest and only hoping around layer 1 of the dark seas. While on the latter end, layer 5 deckhands giving legendary stats while also being the hardest to obtain as you fight insanity 5.

how do you fight insanity 5 respectfully

(also I could edit this in since this seems like a good idea to add on)

Probably warding 5 or just wing it as a warden build

common warden W

also can I put in your idea to addon to this

Yeah sure go ahead :+1:
My wording is kinda bad so you might wanna fix it up a bit if possible >-<

So like will these deckhands cause insanity I when you’re on the ship or how exactly does this insanity they apply work.

Wait is this a planned feature?

I’m assuming when you pilot the ship you’ll suffer from insanity effects like a spinning compass or messages to yourself

iirc I believe so

Oh alright, but since we’re gonna get a purple needle for the compass that always points towards the sea clusters, will that insanity also affect the purple needle or only like higher levels of insanity?

the purple compass would probably spin in a normal sea cluster but work as intended in the dark sea so it’s not annoying

This idea great, but I have once slight nitpick:

The Dark Sea is going to be seemingly endless, so having the player look everywhere for the deckhand is going to be tedious. To fix this, the deckhand should respawn at the closest island to the one you beat them on. This would still allow for a search, but have it be less time-consuming.

Aside from that, I really like this idea. The way to attain these deckhands is smart and reminds me of another suggestion I really liked. I’ve always thought the renown-deckhand system is a bit funky, which is why the combat system is something I think should be implemented. Very well done, I hope this gets considered.

Just an overall good suggestion, I really can’t see any problems other than looking for them.

I feel like my concepts are good but I’m just not a very trustworthy person when it comes to hearing out my ideas due to my past lol :sob: that’s why they don’t do very well

Not that I was like the worst suggestor ever but eh I never really made suggestions
