Desktop vs. laptop

ideally a desktop, but space constraints can force you to have a laptop instead

When you have 2 fans and a liquid metal heat sink, and tune its settings for performance, mine barleyBarley | Description, Nutrition, Uses ...

heats up

I have an 8-year-old laptop.

Pros:

+Portable. (I haven’t moved it from its current spot in years.)

Cons:

-I get a hardcoded error message advising me to replace the battery whenever on bootup, and it can’t function when not plugged in.

-A couple of the keys are so worn out that they pop out and need to be pressed back into place incredibly often. One time the little transparent plastic nub that actually registers the press got flung and I had to spend 10 minutes looking for it. It was right next to the laptop.

-The fans occasionally get 10 times louder for a brief moment and for seemingly no discernible reason.

-If it’s more than 30 degrees outside it can’t run for longer than 2 hours before it overheats and shuts down.

5/5 would recommend.

Clean your fan. Take off the back, then remove the fan(s). Proceed to use a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment to clean it; they have dust in them, causing your performance to fail. If it’s stationary, then keep it on a charger. If it’s telling you the replace the battery, replace it. Keyboard keys are easily purchasable and replaceable.

also any computer desktop or laptop working so well after 8 years of service is pretty impressive

Desktop. Most games just work better for the Desktop environment.

Like even AO; its horrendous to play on laptop. Your fingers are crammed to the mousepad, and you’re forced to shiftlock-mance just to turn because laptops are horrible for consitient right-clicking in most cases. The ones that have a dedicated button, they’re usually not as easy to continously move with.

Desktop has none of these issues, and it usually has better performance.

Laptops aren’t exactly bad, they are just worse then desktops. You only buy a laptop if you really need to move it around and you have to work on the flow.

I would complain about a laptop’s unreliability and repair costs but I’m unsure how much truth that holds

Just attach a mouse and monitor of your choice to a desktop, and personally, AO runs fine on my laptop
