Mostly shown through the title, so I’ll just provide context: I’ve been watching youtube videos about space and stuff recently and then this thought popped up in my head.
Now, I haven’t payed enough attention to the dialogue in the game or anything in the lore doc to see anything answering this question, so if there is, let me know, but there’s something else I realized.
The planets are named after Roman gods, which, as far as I know, are pretty much the same as the Greek Gods, just under another name, the Greek’s Zeus is the Roman’s Jupiter, Gaia is Earth, Poseidon is Neptune, etc.
but the thing about the arcane world is that the greek gods are fucking Real and they only seem to refer to them by their greek names
…so the roman names might just not exist
What the hell would they call them? They’ve probably namedropped Earth already, sure, but there’s still 8 different planets to go through. (pluto is a planet. i do not care for the inconsistencies this causes.) Do you think they’d just name them after their dead gods, or would the presence of the gods make them create new names?
it’s solved, but there’s a reason i didn’t just google this and move on, i want people to talk about Arcane Odyssey Planet Headcanons that’s right you heard me i want people to make shit up
ok then i believe magic astronomers would make telescopes out of glass magic and use light magic to focus the distant light to find far away celestial objects, vastly increasing their knowledge of space
i also believe that the usage of gravity, speed, and atomic magic were used to make various advancements in the field of physics, granting the arcane universe a greater understanding of the world than before
on one hand, a lot more people are focusing on magic
on the other hand, the majority of humanity is still magic-less, which could mean that math and science would progress at a relative pace to ours (though a lot of that science is ALSO probably about figuring out what magic’s about)
Well even though the Greeks knew about the planets, who knows if that information survived the Fall of Olympus (40% of humanity gone) and then especially Durza’s apocalypse (80% of humanity gone) where the world was completely splintered and most written records probably destroyed
Even if it did, I doubt many people many people knew about it given Averill’s journey was apparently how humanity “discovered” the Earth was round even though the Greeks already knew that AND had calculated its circumference pretty accurately hundreds of years before AO/AA
As for people rediscovering the planets based on how they moved differently relative to the actual stars, they might just end up chalking that up to the magic radiation screwing with the sky/atmosphere lol
HECK YEAH SOMEONE MENTIONED CERES. I love Ceres, favorite tiny space object and got deplaneted way before Pluto so I’m shocked it doesn’t get mentioned often
It’s officially a dwarf planet now, it was an asteroid for a while but when Pluto was removed from planetness they needed a new category for Small Planetish Thingies, so they lumped it in with Ceres as a dwarf planet
